17: Planning a Vacation

Tahno frowned as he thought back to the nights that he fought with you. Times he bent at you or argued back. He regretted it now more than ever. He was so frustrated that you couldn't leave behind the swamp like he had. It was an embarrassment to him. It still was now, but what did it matter with his fame gone? Tahno had so many pent-up feelings; that's why he argued in the first place. Even when he was sleeping around, the thought that you were with someone else drove him over the edge.

"Look Ming, I'm sorry."

"I know you are. I know why you're so angry and I'm sorry we can't fix it. I'm sorry you can't be who you want to be but at least we're here together."

He was taken aback by the sudden assertiveness, but he wasn't about to let her know that. It was at this time that you finally entered the conversation.

"I done been thinkin'..." You looked up into the ceiling. "I reckon its time we go back to the swamp. Just a visit maybe... Or we could go visit ya family in the fire kingdom; though I doubt ya wanna."

"I don't want to see them." Tahno admitted. "I'm not ready to atone for the way I treated them."

"Your family lives in the fire kingdom?" Shaozu asked as he punched at Ming.

"His daddy do," You answered for him, "Momma sometimes."

"You have mixed parents?" Shaozu raised an eyebrow. "Never would have expected."

"Why? A lot of people do now!" Tahno was a bit defensive, though he wasn't sure why. "But when I was growin' up, it wasn't cool." He sat next to you on the lawn and pulled your head onto his shoulder. "What did they call it all the time, YN?"

"Taboo." You nodded. "Taboo that he ain't got parents from the same tribes. But swamp ain't care. Only fancy fire benders did." You were a bit heated. "No offense, Shaozu."

"Fire benders are very uppity." He shrugged. "Hundred years of supremacy will do that to you."

"Do ya wanna visit ya sister?" You asked Tahno, rubbing his leg.

"Nah. She's busy."

"How ya know?"

"She's always busy. She had a kid by the time I was born, so we're not even that close. Only enough for her to privately acknowledge me."

"That's so harsh." Ming shook her head.

"She loves both our parents. So, it's not like I could run to her with complaints. We were raised completely different. I honestly think she got the better hand. Hard not to resent that kind of stuff."

"Circlin' back... when can we go home?" Tahno loved how your eyes twinkled with excitement. It had been a long time since he'd seen it.

"Why not tomorrow?"
