SHE HAD NEEDED A BREAK, HONESTLY. She wasn't really one for clubbing anymore but lord did she need this. Since she graduated university however many years ago (lord, she was starting to feel old), she'd kind of grown out of clubbing. But she'd always have a bit of a soft spot for the bustling streets of Fortitude Valley. She light odour of urine and the distant screams of drunk girls was oddly nostalgic from the brunette—it brought her back to less complicated times. Back when the words of a stupid athlete weren't constantly dancing around the back of her mind.
Work had been occupying so much of her free time lately that she'd hardly had time for her friends. They'd started a joke about her being a workaholic even though this job was allegedly her 'stepping stone' into a better job. That excuse only worked for the first two years.
So, here she was waiting in line for a club she hadn't been to since she was nineteen with the same two girls she'd first gone in there with. In their skimpy little outfits, they waited to get inside and lose themselves to the music.
"You'd think your social media fame would let us able to skip lines," complained her friend Hayley as she adjusted her tube top for what had to be the hundredth time since they'd left Dionne's apartment. Dionne wondered how the girl even planned to dance if her top wouldn't stay in place.
"Literally," agreed their shorter friend, Ren as she tried to look past the people in front of them to see if the line has budged at all. It hadn't. "What's the point in you fucking famous athletes if we can't even use it to our advantage." The Māori girl crossed her arms, scrolling on her phone out of boredom—she'd not had enough to drink yet, unfortunately.
A horrified Dionne slapped her friend on the arm, looking around to make sure no one had heard what she said. "Shut up," Dionne hissed, feeling her body wobble a bit. Maybe the third shot of tequila has been a bad idea after all.
"Oh, look, we're next," Hayley said excitedly, smiling at the bouncer as he checked her battered ID photo matched her face. Dionne and Ren exchanged a look before it was their turn to be checked in.
Once they were stamped and ready to go, they made their way down into the main dance floor. It took Dionne's eyes a second to adjust to the flashing lights as the music ponded through her veins. Song after song, they threw their limbs around everywhere to the sound of the beat.
It'd been Hayley's idea to do more shots. Dionne really didn't need anymore but she did it, anyways. As the liquid started a fire, she stumbled back onto the dance-floor dragging her friends right behind her. Her vision got blurrier the more she jumped around.
In the corner of her eye, she saw a strangely familiar tall muscular man with tattoos pull Ren into a booth as he whispered sweet nothings in her ear. Their tanned friend sent them a thumbs up, indicating she was okay to go with him. As her and Hayley continued to dance, she periodically checked on them to make sure her friend hadn't been kidnapped. The familiarity only continued to strike her as he laughed at something she said, leaning in and putting a hand on her leg. But where. . . ? It was too dark and they were dancing a bit too far away for her to get a good look at his features. But the guessing game was driving her insane. The only distinct feature she partially could make out was To Mako on his forearm, the one that was caressing her friends thigh.
Soon enough her other friend had been swept up by another guy with tattoos, though he was a lot less tall then the other one. He sat in the same booth as Ren, clearly friends with the other guy. Dionne hoped there'd be a third muscular guy with tattoos to come sweep her off her feet. She now felt as though she was going crazy because both of those men looked oddly familiar. However, she couldn't get close enough to inspect without interrupting their moments.
Her mind wondered back to the Vegas trip, that silly night to be precise. The way his hands had held her in place against that wall, the intensity of his grip and the feel of him pressed hard against her core. She wasn't one to hook up with many people so the memory would probably stay with her for a while.
As she swayed to the music, she felt a tug on her hair. "Hey there," whispered a male voice in her ear as she felt arms wrap around her waist. "Haven't seen you around here before."
She spun around to face the stranger, smiling at him dazed. He wasn't much taller then her with his classic tradie mullet and moustache combination. "I'm Dionne," she shouted over the music, wrapping her arms around his shoulders. One dance couldn't hurt, maybe he'd buy her a free drink.
Maybe it was the loneliness that crept into anyone once they hit their mid twenties but she let his hands roam—something she wouldn't usually happen in a club setting. "How's bout we head back to my place?" He eventually whispered in her ear and she found herself agreeing.

Ren slid her phone back into her pocket as she read Dionne's message, smiling that her friend was finally putting herself out there. She loved Dionne but that girl was a bit of a neurotic workaholic, since her last break up she'd kind of stopped allowing herself to have a social life. Ren liked when she saw glimpses of the old Dionne again. Turning back to Jordan, she smiled dreamily at him. "So, what do you do?" She asked, leaning into his chest.
He smiled at her, "I play sport," he shouted over the music before looking across at Hayley and Reece, who were locked in a passionate make-out session. "So does he."
Ren squinted at him, trying to place where she'd seen either faces. Being from New Zealand, she didn't know too many Australian sporting stars. Maybe they were Cricketers. "I'm a waitress," she admitted. "Lame, I know."
Jordan laughed, shaking his head. "Nah, could be doing a lot worse."
She could feel him leaning in, excitement bubbled in her chest. However, the moment was ruined by someone throwing themself down on the seat beside them. "Mate, The Mets so shit lately," huffed Patty, running a hand through his luscious locks.
Hayley and Reece broke apart to give him dirty looks but the brunette girl stopped in her tracks, recognition dawning on her. "Hold on, I've seen you somewhere before," she called out before looking to Ren. "Is he that Rugby player Dionne fucked or am I tripping?"
Both Jordan and Reece choked on their drinks, looking at their teammate accusingly. "You fucked that reporter?"
Reece couldn't help but laugh. "So that's why you're so obsessed with her," he chortled, playing with Hayley's fingers.
Patty's face had gone red. This wasn't information that was supposed to come out, he'd not told a single soul it happened—mainly from the embarrassment of being ghosted immediately afterwards. "I. . ." He was floored, completely lost on how to defend himself in this situation.
"Wait, she was her tonight? Wasn't she?" Jordan asked, remembering there had been a third friend with them.
Patty perked up at this, sitting up and looking around for her. When he looked back at his friends, he saw Reece giving him a smirk. Suddenly Patty felt embarrassed all over again but tenfold. He shouldn't care if she was here, he knew she wouldn't.
"Well. . ." Ren scratched the back of her neck, looking for Hayley to help explain the situation.
The green eyed girl jumped in. "She was here. . ."
Reece looked at her quizzically. "But now. . . ?"
"Um," Hayley looked at Patty apologetically before blurting out, "she went home with some guy. He wasn't very hot, to be honest," she added, trying to smoothen the blow to his ego.
Patty didn't say anything. She was entitled to go home with whoever she wanted to, why should he care? But he did find it funny how she'd told him she wasn't one for casual hookups. That it was a one-time mistake she'd stumbled into his bed. Whatever.

AS THE SUNLIGHT SHONE IN THE ROOM, DIONNE WOKE UP TO A LOT MORE MESSAGES THEN SHE HAD EXPECTED. She'd had so many messages that her phone had died the second she turned the screen on in the morning. As she waited for the device to turn on, she turned to look at the naked figure beside her. Regret washed over her as she remembered how she'd ended up here. The feel of his slimy hands raking up and down her body, finishing prematurely before rolling over and passing out drunk. Leaving her to clean herself up, unsatisfied and drunk.
Finally, her screen lit up and she just about fell out of bed when she read the messages.

double update !!! (everyone clap)
so i'd like to give a massive thanks to i08ren & Ocea1cPerl for agreeing to appear as side characters in this chapter <333 you should definitely go check out both their books. and a double thanks to ren for even inspiring me to do something like this. if you check out her reece walsh book, i'm actually a character in it :))
writing chapters in a club brings me back to writing double trouble (my jordan riki fic, you should check it out). i miss ali & jordan so much. i have an edit of them on my tik tok if anyone's interested—my username is @quicksilvrss
there will probably be another chapter either really late tonight or early tomorrow morning (depends how motivated i am). i don't have the self control to pre write chapters and keep them in my drafts, i have to release everything i've written at once—it's a problem.
