Five

Brick sat on the swing, staring out in the distance. It's around eleven at night and Brick could feel his phone buzzing in his pocket but refused to pick it up. Brick sighed and pulled his jacket closer. He needed some clear air, he needed some alone time. His brothers fussing over him, making sure he atleast says one sentence everytime they speak to him.

So Brick ran out.

He didn't know if his brothers was following him it even looking for him. Brick sighed and stood up, he shoved his hands in his pockets and walked to his house. Brick figured he has been out long enough, three hours, and he felt someone tap his shoulder. Brick jumped and looked behind him, he saw Blossom standing there. She looked worried.

"Brick! Boomer called, screaming that you're missing. We've been looking everywhere!" Blossom yelled.

Brick stepped back, already getting overwhelmed by her.

"Are you okay? Cold?" Blossom asked.

"F-fine." Brick said.

Blossom smiled, "Boomer and Butch. . . they're worried. You almost gave them a heart attack."

"I don't want to be on meds." Brick said.

"What?" Blossom asked, confused.

"They want me on meds. I don't want or need them." Brick said and stopped.

Blossom turn to look at him, wanting to know more. Brick sat down on the sidewalk, feeling his body frozen. Blossom sat next to him, moving closer to keep warm. Brick looked forward and pulled his jacket closer.

"Why do they want you on meds?" Blossom asked.

"They think I can't control my anxiety anymore. I know I can."

"Brick, they're only trying to help you."

"Putting me on meds? Making my brain go numb or muddy? Guess what Blossom! I don't want to be that freak who's on medicine!"

"Brick, you won't be. You will still be Brick."

"Will I? Look at me, tell me to my face that you won't see me any different!" Brick yelled.

Blossom grabbed his hand, "I won't."

Brick looked at her, he didn't know what to say. He looked away, closing his eyes. Brick laid his head against her shoulder. Blossom smiled and wrapped her arms around him, trying to keep him warm. Brick gulped and listened to Blossom's heartbeat.

Her heartbeat sounded steady but sometimes he could it skip a beat. Brick didn't know why it would skip but he loved it. The beat is making him calm. Brick smiled and he found out something. Brick loved hearing her heartbeat.

"Come on. You need to go home." Blossom said.

She helped him up and they walked to his house. Brick saw police cars and his brothers, Boomer and Butch, standing outside. Butch was talking to the police while Boomer chewed on his fingers with worry written across his face. As soon Boomer saw Brick, he looked happy, angry and upset all at the same time.

"They're going to kill me." Brick mumbled.

Boomer pushed the police out of the way and stomped to Brick, "I am so going to hurt you!"

"Sorry officers." Butch said as the police looked at them.

Boomer dragged Brick in and pushed him in front of the heater. Brick stared at him as Boomer put a blanket on his shoulders. Brick looked out the door and didn't see Blossom. He pouted, Brick wanted to hear her heartbeat. So he could calm down.

"Why did you run out? Brick! You could've got hurt or gotten lost! Why didn't you think before you ran?" Boomer asked.

"I wanna sleep." Brick said.

Boomer sighed, "Fine, go ahead. You're still going to school tomorrow!"

Brick ran to his room, slamming the door. He laid in his bed and rolled his side. Falling asleep so he could talk to Blossom tomorrow.

---

Brick sat in class, tapping his fingers lightly against his book. He looked out the window, listening to the teacher, but watched the birds flying north. He noticed the V formation and felt jealous. All the birds knew what to do, they didn't have to feel scared or nervous. They did this every year of their life and trust themselves to fly north. Brick could barely talk to people without getting tougne tied or getting nervous.

He turned away, feeling angry and looked at the bored. The bell rang and he waited for everyone to leave. He didn't want to be near people or slow people down. Brick picked up his bag and left the class, right now he has lunch. Brick walked to the library and sat down at his usual table. He pulled out his math homework and heard someone sit across from him. Brick looked up and see Blossom smiling at him.

"Hi! I know that you got home safe and all but are you feeling alright? Did you catch a cold?" Blossom asked.

Brick shook his head no.

"Good. I don't think I could handle the bus ride home alone. You are riding the bus, right?"

Brick nodded.

"You know, sometimes I like it when you don't talk, other times. I don't. Anyways, want a chocolate bar?"

"I don't like chocolate." Brick mumbled.

"You don't like chocolate? That's a shocker."

"Can't have dairy."

"You're lactose intolerant?"

Brick nodded.

Blossom pouted but opened hee bag. She pulled out a pack of Skittles and passed it to him. Brick stared at them and Blossom rolled her eyes.

"Just take them. I don't like that kind that much. Bubbles keeps forgetting." Blossom said.

Brick grabbed the pack, "Thanks."

"No problem!" Blossom said. "I hope this makes us friends."

"Friends?" Brick asked.

"Yeah, friends. Don't you have some?"

Brick shook his head no.

Blossom frowned, "Then let me be your first."

"How do you be friends? I mean, what do I do?"

She laughed, making Brick blush. Blossom smiled and winked towards Brick.

"I like you. I think we're going to be just fine."

"Okay."
