Chapter 33
Finley's P.O.V
I got into Ashton's car, an old Toyota and I ran my hand along the leather seats. "Nice car," I commented.
Next to me, Ashton snorted as she started the car. "Yeah, besides the leather seats that are so cold in the morning that my ass freezes and it sounds like a cat having a hairball, it's a lovely car."
I chuckled as Ashton drove off. She flipped on the radio and the familiar beat of a familiar song came on. Ashton and I looked at each other with matching grins.
"Did you see the video with" I began
"The cop?" Ashton interjected. "Yeah, best video of my life."
As if we had an unspoken agreement, both of us started jamming out, singing along at the top of our lungs.
"Shake it off, shake it off!"
Ashton reached for her radio and turned it up. We were bouncing along to the beat, screaming the lyrics when we came to a stoplight.
"Hey hey hey!" The rap part came on and we were into it, doing hand motions; I felt very much like a drama girl. "When you've been getting down and out about the liars and the dirty dirty cheats of the world, you could have been getting down to this sick beat."
Ashton sang, "My ex man brought his new girlfriend," she pointed to me. "She's like-"
"Oh my God, I'm just gonna shake it-" I sang.
"To the fella over there with the hella good hair why don't you come on over baby we can shake shake shake-" Ashton sang, pausing and looking at me.
"Yeah-oh!" we screamed together.
The song ended just as we pulled into the mall parking lot. "That was good timing," I giggled.
Ashton searched for a parking spot. "Dammit!" she cursed. "No parking near the front."
We parked a ways away from the building and walked in together. "Where do you want to go?" I asked.
"Hmm," Ashton pondered my question. "Let's go get dresses! Get you all dolled up for Eli," she winked slyly at me.
I rolled my eyes. "Please."
"What?" she feigned innocence. "Aren't you going to go to prom with him?"
"Prom is in like May," I rolled my eyes.
"Winter formal then!" Ashton threw her hands in the air. "We're going to buy you a dress for Eli whether you like it or not, dammit!"
I raised my hands in surrender. "Okay, okay, jeez, don't kill me."
It was Ashton's turn to roll her eyes. "Let's go," she said.
Ashton dragged me to store that were full of frilly pink dresses that I turned my nose up at. I didn't want to wear a dress that was too short, I didn't want to wear one that was really long, it couldn't be too sparkly or frilly, I was picky.
"You are impossible to shop with," Ashton stated, moving her hair out of her eyes.
I shrugged. "Sorry?"
"No you are not," Ashton said dryly. "I think you're enjoying watching me suffer."
"Guilty," I teased her and Ashton smacked me in the shoulder.
"Hey-look, it's Charlotte-Russe!" Ashton said suddenly, pointing to the store. It was bright lit and full of dresses that did not fit my criteria.
"Nope," I said. "Not going in there."
Ashton rolled her eyes. "Yes you are," she said, and before I knew it I was being dragged into the store.
We started looking through the racks, and it wasn't that bad. Their dresses weren't for summer, rather for winter but I didn't really care. I found a red one that would be good for Christmas, but it was too sparkly and it was cut weird.
"Hey, what do you think of this?" Ashton asked, holding up a dress.
"For you or for me?" I asked her, coming closer.
It was a cute dress, a grey one with a built-in black shoulder shrug and a black belt and there was a design on the top, with silver sequins.
"For me," Ashton said. "What do you think?"
"It's cute," I admitted. "I think you should try it on."
Ashton nodded and headed off to the dressing room. I waited outside as she changed. Ashton took a while. It had to have been over ten minutes and she was still changing.
"Ash?" I asked, calling through the door. "You okay?"
"I'm fine," she called back, but she sounded different; her voice was strangled. It sounded like she was trying hard not to cry.
"I'm coming in," I announced, ignoring her protests as I stepped inside the dressing room.
I found Ashton sitting on the bench inside, tears streaming down her cheeks; she was still in the dress.
"What's wrong?" I asked, sitting next to her.
Ashton sniffed. "I'm fat."
"No you're not," I said instantly. "Look at you, this dress is beautiful! You're skinnier than me."
"I hate this stupid dress!" She suddenly shouted and stood up, ripping it off. "I hate it! I hate everything!"
"Ash," I soothed. "Calm down."
"No," she hissed, putting her clothes back on hurriedly. "I'm fat and I'm ugly. Just look at me!" She gestured to her body, her stomach.
"I can see your ribs," I said gently. "Ashton, I'm not telling you what to do, but you're not fat. At all. You're super skinny and beautiful. Don't let your stupid model of a sister bring you down. She's rude and fake and nowhere near as cool as you. In my opinion, you're prettier. Don't let anyone tell you differently."
Ashton looked at me, something in her eyes. Suddenly, she took a step forward, grabbed my head and kissed me hard.
I recoiled, shocked and almost instantly Ashton started crying. "I'm so sorry, oh God-" she choked on a sob and ran out the door.
"Wait! Ashton!"" I yelled after her, chasing her but she disappeared in the crowd. "Well, shit," I muttered.
I had no idea Ashton was a lesbian. I didn't care if she was. Love was love and I didn't care who she loved, gender or whatever. I was just shocked she kissed me. And she was my ride home, and I needed to comfort her. So I called Eli.
"Hello?" He said.
"Eli, it's me I need you to come to the mall and pick me up," I said quickly, ignoring the hello.
"Well, hello to you too," Eli chuckled.
"I'm serious," I said, irritable.
"Why? What happened?" Eli asked, his tone more concerned. "Did you and Ashton get in a fight?"
"Kind of," I started to explain. "We were shopping for dresses, then she found a cute one and tried it on but took forever, so I went to check on her and found her crying in the dressing room. She said that she was fat so I comforted her, I called her beautiful and told her model sister to stuff it where the sun don't shine and then she kissed me, then she started crying-"
"Wait, Ashton kissed you?!" Eli asked, interrupting me and sounding a tad alarmed.
"Yes, and then she started crying and ran out and-"
"She kissed you?!" Eli said, sounding slightly outraged.
"Yes, keep up," I said, irritated with the repetitive question. "And she cried and ran out and I need to go comfort her."
"I can't believe she kissed you," Eli mumbled, sounding angry.
"Me neither, I mean, I don't really care but-"
"I care!" Eli interjected. "She kissed you! You're my girlfriend!" in a quieter tone, he grumbled. "Not just boys, I have to watch out for girls too."
"Stop interrupting me," I snapped. "Who cares if Ashton's gay? I don't. Who cares if she kissed me? I sure don't. All I care about is comforting my friend."
Eli was silent for a second, and then he spoke. "You're right," he said, resigned.
"Okay," I said. "So can you please come pick me up?"
"Yeah," Eli said. "Of course."
"Good. Hurry up."
