Chapter 24
Finley's P.O.V
I sat nervously in my desk, tapping my feet as Mr. Parker went on, talking about World War 1. My mind was somewhere far off in the distance, Russia maybe, as I was too preoccupied to focus on what my favorite teacher was saying.
I had accepted Eli's offer... proposal.... Whatever it was, I had accepted and now I was going on a date with him, and I was too busy focusing on that to pay attention to the lesson.
The bell must have rung, because everyone was moving, grabbing their backpacks and leaving and I was slow in getting up, stuffing papers in my folder as I tried to leave.
"Ms. Collins," a voice called.
I froze and turned around slowly, to see Mr. Parker looking at me. "Yes, sir?"
"Stay behind a while, I need to talk to you," he said.
I'm not sure if they did, but I felt like my eyes widened as I began to panic, wondering what Mr. Parker was going to talk to me about.
He saw my face and chuckled. "Don't look so afraid, I'm not going to yell at you."
I tried to wipe my face of any emotion as relief rushed through me. "Yes, sir."
"Enough with that 'sir' business," he said, waving his hand. "It's entirely too formal."
"Yes s-" I caught myself before I finished the sentence. "What did you need to see me about?"
"Ah, yes," Mr. Parker said, closing his laptop and clicking his pen before slipping it inside a cup resting on his desk. "I noticed you were distracted today, Ms. Collins. Usually you're very attentive, but today you weren't paying attention. Is something wrong?"
"Um," I said, unsure of how to respond. Despite Mr. Parker being my favorite teacher, I hadn't spoken to him besides answering a question. "S-Sorry, it won't h-happen again."
"I don't care if it happens again, I just would like to know why," he explained. "Am I boring to you?"
"No," I said hastily. "I j-just... I'm n-nervous."
Mr. Parker sat down in his chair, folding his hands together and surveyed me. "Are you feeling symptoms of your anxiety?" he asked.
My jaw dropped. "You k-know about my a-anxiety?"
Mr. Parker chuckled a little. "Ms. Collins, it's a medical condition. Your teachers should know. Whether or not they treat you differently is their choice, but I know and I don't push you to talk in my class. So, are you nervous for something, or is it your anxiety?"
"I'm n-nervous for s-something," I answered. "I have a d-date with my b-boyfriend."
For some reason, I felt that I could confide in him and he frowned slightly. "You have a boyfriend? Does he make you anxious?"
"N-No," I said immediately. "He m-makes it b-better."
"Good," Mr. Parker said, leaning back. "So why are you nervous?"
"It's our f-first date," I said.
Mr. Parker raised an eyebrow. "You're dating and this is your first date?"
"We w-were friend b-before," I tried to explain.
Mr. Parker nodded, looking deep in thought. "Then treat him like he's not your boyfriend, he's your friend, like it was before."
"Th-Thanks," I said.
"Anytime," he said easily. "Now, do you need a pass?" he asked just as the bell rung. "Guess that answers that question," he chuckled and scribbled on a piece of paper before handing it to me. "Here. And have fun on your date."
"Thanks, Mr. Parker," I said.
And as I left, I felt that Mr. Parker had cemented himself in the role as my favorite teacher, and in addition to being a great teacher, he also gave very good advice.
...
"Where are we going?" I asked as Eli pulled me towards his car. He was clad in jeans and a long-sleeved white shirt that had my heart beating faster as it outlined his muscles and guys in longs sleeves were attractive to me, I don't know why.
"A place," he answered vaguely.
"Really? I never would have guessed," I said drily.
"Was that sarcasm?"
"Yes," I answered.
Eli paused, turning to brush the hair out of his eyes as he faced me. "I taught you well, my grasshopper."
"Yeah, yeah," I said, ignoring him as I stepped into his car.
"Hey!" he protested. "What happened to me opening the door for you and being all chivalrous and stuff?"
"Chivalry is dead," I responded.
"Now I know why," he mumbled under his breath. As he got in the car I smacked him on the arm. "Ow!" he exclaimed. "What was that for?"
"Being a smartass," I responded.
"I could just take you home," he threatened.
I snorted. "You wouldn't."
"Would too."
"Would not."
"Would too."
"Would too."
"Would not."
"Ah-ha!" I exclaimed, pointing at him. "I win!"
Eli pouted, grumbling to himself and I leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.
"It's okay," I said. "This is going to be the best date ever, yeah?"
"Yeah," Eli said.
Within five minutes, Eli had driven me to the movie theater, and announced that we were going to see The Maze Runner, which he knew that I had wanted to see for ages. Despite it not being a completely original and adorable idea for a date, I loved it, and the movie was amazing, and it was even better having a boyfriend hotter than Dylan O'Brien next to me to complain when I fawned over the guys in the movie.
"I think you just wanted to see that just to see the dudes" Eli commented, swinging our hands back and forth as we left.
"You caught me," I said, giggling.
"Let's just get you home, yeah?" Eli said, dropping my hand and sprinting over to his car to open the door for me.
I laughed as he bowed as I got in the car. "Thank you, oh so chivalrous Eli."
"Chivalry is not dead," he announced as he started his car.
"And if you die?" I teased.
Eli shot me a look to say that he was not amused. "Chivalry is dead and you'll miss me until the day you die."
"Is that so?" I said, a grin on my face as I made fun of him.
Eli mocked hurt, putting one hand over his heart as he kept one on the wheel. "Then I'm very hurt and I see that you never really liked me, so you could get out right now."
I leaned closer so I could whisper in his ear, "Lucky I'd miss you, then."
Eli shivered as my breath tickled his ear and then replied, "I'd miss you too, if you were to die."
"Thanks," I said, laughing.
"Maybe I miss you could be our always," Eli said and I pushed him gently, laughing harder.
"Shut up, you adorable idiot."
"I'm not adorable!
...
A short ride later, we got home and I turned to Eli. "I had fun today," I said.
"Same," Eli answered. "It's fun wherever you are, unless you decide to tell me how cute Dylan O'Brien is every five minutes, or how adorable that Noob guy was."
"Newt," I corrected, laughing.
Eli sighed deeply and crossed his arms. "Just shut up and kiss me."
I was happy to kiss Eli in his car for another five minutes, but then we heard the yelling.
