S3E1: Writer's Block

INT. WATTPAD'S ROOM -- NIGHT

Wattpad is asleep alone in her room, tossing and turning and having a nightmare. She looks about two and a half years older than the last time we saw her, though the change is most apparent in her hair, which has been dyed blonde. STAY ON this shot for a few seconds before we

DISSOLVE TO:

INT. COMPUTER CORP SEVENTH FLOOR -- NIGHT [DREAM]

WATTPAD'S POV

Wattpad stands in the middle of the long abandoned seventh floor of Computer Corp. She looks down and sees that her dream self is clad in an orange sweater and pleated brown skirt with thick brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. A droplet of water falls in the center of her old logo. EXIT WATTPAD POV.

Wattpad reaches a hand up to her eye and realizes her dream-self has been sobbing. She stumbles forward , limping.

WATTPAD
Google? Yahoo? Tumblr?

No response. Wattpad continues through the seventh floor until she reaches "Shippers' island"--or at least what's left of it. She collapses forward onto her former desk and notices a book with a white cover with a sword sticking out of it.

WATTPAD
Fanfic? Quotev?

No response. Wattpad attempts to remove the sword--an ornate number with an orange and white hilt--to no avail. Suddenly, red liquid begins pouring out of the novel. Upon closer inspection, the liquid contains minuscule text within it, mostly ones and zeroes. More teardrops stain the story, falling quicker and quicker.

CUT TO:

INT. WATTPAD'S ROOM -- CONTINUOUS

Wattpad awakens in a cold sweat and clutches her head, pushing some hair in front of her face. She then rolls her eyes and falls back asleep.

EXT. MOVIE SET -- DAY

The next day. Wattpad sits in a chair labeled "screenwriter" off to the side of a movie set. She scrolls through her phone as NETFLIX talks to two young actors.

NETFLIX
Okay, so in this scene the shifters are taking their first shot at proving themselves in their combat class, so you really need to work to capture Ava and Jake's specific fighting styles as well as their inexperience and desperation when it comes to...

Wattpad sighs loudly.

NETFLIX
Is something the matter, Wattney?

WATTPAD
Do you mind if I take five? Family emergency.

NETFLIX
Oh, sure.
(to everyone)
Take 5, everyone!

Wattpad walks over to a secluded area near craft services and dials a phone number, looking as though she already regrets this decision.

SPLIT SCREEN:

ON LEFT: FANFICTION.NET ("FANFIC") is seated on a couch with ARCHIVE OF OUR OWN ("AO3")'S legs stretched out over hers. Both websites are on their laptops, writing. Fanfic notices her phone ringing and answers it, pushing her computer and AO3 to the side.

ON RIGHT: Wattpad taps her foot, waiting for Fanfic to pick up.

FANFIC
Hello?

WATTPAD
Uh, hi, Fanfic. Sorry if I'm interrupting anything.

Fanfic glances to AO3, who has an inquisitive look on her face. Fanfic silently mouths the words "old coworker". AO3 takes out a notebook and writes the words "old cow?" Fanfic rolls her eyes and makes a hand signal that means "I'll tell you later".

FANFIC
No, you're good. So, what brings you to call? It's been what, ten months?

WATTPAD
Eleven, actually. And, uh, it's nothing, really. I've just been having some kinda weird dreams lately. About Computer Corp.

Fanfic gets a grim look on her face. AO3 writes in the notebook again, concerned, and Fanfic shakes her head before leaning forward.

FANFIC
What kinds of dreams?

WATTPAD
Well, I'm back to who I was in, like, 2015, except no one else is at the office and I've been badly injured. Then there's a fancy sword and a novel and blood coming from the novel...
(a beat)
Wait, this is insane. I shouldn't have--

FANFIC
(interrupting her)
No, I've been having those dreams too! A little different of course, but there's always the old office and a book and the distinct feeling that something is wrong. I just never really thought anything of it since I was watching the sword in the stone before bed that night. And the night before that. And the night before that.

WATTPAD
Working on an AU?

FANFIC
Yeah, Umbrella Academy. It's a UAAU.

AO3 laughs.

FANFIC (CONT'D)
But the same dream... I wonder if it means anything? We--or at least I--haven't thought about CC in two and a half years, and all of a sudden it's sending ominous messages through our shared subconscious. What do we do with that?

AO3
Tell her to fly out here and investigate it.

Fanfic takes the phone away from her ear and we temporarily EXIT SPLIT SCREEN.

FANFIC
What?

AO3
I said tell her to fly out here and investigate it. Two people who haven't spoken in forever reconnecting over some paranormal occurrence which draws them to a transformative location... Even if it's just a bad burrito or some writing inspiration, it's still a cool premise.

The SPLIT SCREEN resumes as Fanfic puts the phone back up to her ear.

FANFIC
Sorry, AO3 was just telling me she thinks you should fly out here and we can investigate together. I know, you're too busy and it's not like we'll find anything, but--

WATTPAD
No, I'm in.

FANFIC
What?

WATTPAD
These dreams have to mean something, right? I mean, sure, I'll miss work, but if it means I can stop worrying about what it was trying to tell me it's worth it.

FANFIC
Nice! So, are we thinking next month or sometime in the fall? I'll be away with AO3 on her book tour for the first half of October but any other time than that--

During Fanfic's talk, Wattpad has taken out a second cell phone and is texting on it.

WATTPAD
Actually, Netflix just said I could head out tonight. We've only got one day left of filming this season, then it's all post production from here.

FANFIC
Awesome! See you soon, then?

Wattpad, who's been flipping through photos on the second phone this whole time stops on a selfie of her and Fanfic from February 2017 and smiles.

WATTPAD
Yeah. See you soon, then.

Wattpad hangs up. END SPLIT SCREEN.

INT. FANFIC'S LIVING ROOM -- CONTINUOUS

Fanfic sets down her phone.

FANFIC
How did you know that was my ex?

AO3
Which of your old cows would have a weird dream and then immediately think to call you about it?

FANFIC
Coworkers! How did you not see the last two syllables?

AO3 shrugs, which prompts Fanfic to smile before moving to look at her laptop.

FANFIC
So, what do you have so far?

INT. AIRPLANE -- DAY

Wattpad sits in a first class seat on Amazon Airlines, a few hours into her flight. AMAZON ALEXA sits next to her.

ALEXA
Will you be needing the lunch option this flight? We are scheduled to land in 0200 hours.

WATTPAD
No thanks, Alexa.

ALEXA
Alright. Would you like me to warm or cool the air temperature in the cabin?

WATTPAD
No thanks, Alexa.

ALEXA
Okay. Would you like me to play any music for the duration of this flight?

Wattpad thinks a beat.

WATTPAD
Actually, would you mind mirroring this song to my airpods?

ALEXA
Right away.

Wattpad puts her airpods in and "LIZZO - GOOD AS HELL" plays over shots of the cities below.

https://youtu.be/hcA9qZWVpcs

The imagery slowly changes from the neon lights piercing through darkness of Los Angeles at night, to the vast planes of the midwest, to the quaint yet familiar small-town suburbia of a former life. The sun rises as she approaches her destination.

INT. AIRPORT TERMINAL -- DAY

Fanfic stands in the terminal waiting for Wattpad. Unlike Wattpad, her appearance has barely changed from 2017, aside from a new hoodie with her site's logo on it. Wattpad wheels a suitcase down the aisle, not knowing where to look, when Fanfic suddenly runs to her and scoops her up in a bear hug.

FANFIC
You're here!

WATTPAD
I'm here!

Fanfic takes a step back and looks her friend up and down.

FANFIC
You're blonde?

WATTPAD
(laughs)
Yes, I'm blonde.

FANFIC
Oh, cool. Uh, do you want to get coffee and catch up or something?

WATTPAD
I'd love that.

INT. AIRPORT STARBUCKS -- CONTINUOUS

Wattpad and Fanfic sit across from each other at a coffee shop, mid conversation.

WATTPAD
...So then just when I thought I'd faded into obscurity once and for all, Netflix approaches me and is like "Hey, I really liked that one book I read by one of your users, let's get a three-movie deal and you can executive produce it." Next thing I know, people are taking me seriously for the first time in my life, and I realize I need to do a complete change of image so they don't find all those randomness books from 2012.
(a beat)
Anyway, what have you been working on lately?

FANFIC
Not much. I've sort of stopped trying to make writing a career.

WATTPAD
That sucks! I'm sure you're being too hard on yourself, it's really not that--

FANFIC
No, I like it this way. It gives me a lot more freedom to just write for myself, y'know? Plus, AO3's really good. She's only just started out and she already has a huge fanbase, and all her stuff is crowdfunded too. This way, she can be the breadwinner and I can just sit back and write about Hermione falling in love with Captain Marvel as many times as I want.

WATTPAD
That actually sounds nicer than I thought.

FANFIC
Thanks. I'm a sucker for nerdy badass/badass nerd pairings.

Wattpad gazes at Fanfic a beat and is hit with a familiar feeling she thought had faded long ago.

FANFIC
Anyway, the dreams.

WATTPAD
(snapping out of it)
Ah, yes. The dreams. What do you think about them?

FANFIC
I think there's a lot of symbolism to decode, but first we should try to find the actual location and retrace our steps to see if anything happens.

WATTPAD
Agreed. But if Computer Corp.'s as abandoned as we keep seeing it, we'll probably need to break in.

FANFIC
That's never stopped us before, has it?

WATTPAD
(laughs)
You're right. So are you going to be the one to call Tumblr or should I?

FANFIC
What do you mean?

WATTPAD
Well, Tumblr's sort of the master at breaking into that building, seeing as she's done it like five times at this point.

FANFIC
Oh yeah, I forgot about that.

WATTPAD
Speaking of which, how is Tumblr lately?

FANFIC
Wouldn't know. She took off for the city around... twenty months ago? I think that's it. And I haven't heard from her since.

WATTPAD
Wow, sorry. So the Pinvengers have really been Thanos-snapped at this point?

FANFIC
Yeah, but I wouldn't worry about it. I mean, you kind of outgrew us all anyway.

EXT. COMPUTER CORP PARKING LOT -- DAY (SUNSET)

Wattpad and Fanfic stroll through the parking lot, which is also in a state of disrepair. Since no one has parked there in ages, asphalt is breaking and plants have taken hold between the cracks.

WATTPAD
What happened to this place?

FANFIC
You'd know as well as I do.

The websites approach the front doors, Fanfic already with her lock picking kit at the ready. Wattpad tries the handle first and it opens.

FANFIC
That's odd...

WATTPAD
Do you think someone else has already broken in here? Has someone else been having these dreams?

FANFIC
I wouldn't count on it. With the building closed for this long, it'll be a wonder if squatters aren't populating every single one of the tabs.

Fanfic shrugs and pushes past into the building, and Wattpad follows.

INT. COMPUTER CORP LOBBY -- CONTINUOUS

Wattpad and Fanfic enter the lobby, which looks just as it would have two and a half years ago except completely empty. The receptionist desk has a corded phone dropped absentmindedly, as though its user was "poofed" before they were able to hang up. Through all the dust and stale air are a set of footprints leading to the elevator, which the girls follow.

INT. ELEVATOR -- CONTINUOUS

Wattpad and Fanfic slowly take the elevator up to the seventh floor.

FANFIC
(teasing)
Hey, remember when you made out with me in here while you were still with that jerk Wikipedia?

Wattpad nods as though she's not as eager to relive that specific memory right now.

INT. COMPUTER CORP SEVENTH FLOOR -- CONTINUOUS

Wattpad/Fanfic step out of the elevator to find QUOTEV outfitting a third sword/book pair in an empty tab alongside the display previously seen in Wattpad's dream and another with an indigo hilt. This newest sword has a red hilt.

QUOTEV
(muttering to herself)
Alright, I know you weren't technically in the cast while we were still here, but the other two weren't catching on, and you're my last hope...

WATTPAD
Quotev?

Quotev looks up, surprised, and tries to hide the sword underneath the table before scurrying away like a startled chipmunk. Fanfic and Wattpad approach their tabs.

FANFIC
Why would she be doing this?

WATTPAD
I don't know, writing research? She used to say a lot of things were writing research, remember?

QUOTEV
This goes far beyond writing research, Hollyweird. In fact, I'd say it's quite the opposite.

Quotev grins like the cheshire cat over the other side of the cubicle. She doesn't seem to have aged a day, though her hair is now permanently stuck on night mode.

WATTPAD
Oh **** I'm about to get murdered.

QUOTEV
Oh no, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to scare you. Well, I kind of did, but that's just because I needed you around to listen to what I have to say next.

FANFIC
Which is?

WATTPAD
Yeah, spit it out already.

QUOTEV
I'm getting there. Anyway, remember back in, oh, September 22nd 2015 when the browsers came to interview us and suddenly every day had this strange feeling to it, like no day before it had ever existed before? We chalked it all up to being under constant supervision and the fact that Google had finally gotten up the courage to make his move with Yahoo, plus you two lovebirds obviously, but the air had this strange feeling to it, like everything was going according to some great plan?

FANFIC
That's a bit poetic for someone who didn't even show her face until January.

QUOTEV
I was choreographing my entrance. Anyway, things carried on like that for a while, all of us working in harmony, creating middle school level drama and still supporting each other, week after week. Then came February 22nd, 2017.

WATTPAD
September 22... February 22... That cannot be a coincidence. Quotev, have you tried calling Taylor Swift about your conspiracy?

QUOTEV
I like the way you think, Hollyweird, but no, my question is far simpler. Can either of you actually remember the day you stopped coming to work? What motivated you, what offended you so badly, what blocked this part of your identity like a dam diverting a river from where nature wanted it to flow?

WATTPAD
(laughs awkwardly)
I mean, I don't know. We all just kinda stopped doing this after a while.

FANFIC
Ditto to me. I can't even remember the rest of that month, it just sort of happened that way and before I knew it, I was here.

Quotev slaps a wall where she's been taping various documents from seasons 1 and 2.

QUOTEV
That's because it didn't happen! There was no announcement, no memo, no life changing event like the browsers or Windows 10, we all just simultaneously forgot we were supposed to be working together. Well, not I. I have spent the last two and a half years trying to find the answer. Who caused this anomaly? Who built that dam?

Who killed Antisocial media?
