The Girl in Highlights
Chapter 4 | The Girl in Highlights
"What do you want?" I say as Stiles drags me to the end of the parking lot.
"Look. I just wanted to apologize—"
"No. I don't want it from you. I want an apology from your girlfriend."
"She's not my girlfriend! And it's not that easy. She could be stubborn at times." I give him a long stare, "Okay! All the time!" There's a satisfying answer, because it's true. I know I only met the girl, but I could already tell from her attitude. I just want you to know that I'm here to be your friend. That you can—"
"I don't need any friends. Especially people like you who a only cares about people in their 'social radar.'"
"Okay, I realize that we don't get along, but if you just give me a chance–"
"I'm tired of giving second chances."
"Lydia. What happened to you? Why don't you trust anyone."
"And why should I tell you?"
"Because I'm your friend."
"Who says I'm your friend?"
He gives out a frustrating sigh. "Lydia. Okay, we're not friends. But can we just give it a try?" Before I could say anything, he raised his fingers, giving me a signal to stop. "Look, I'm hosting a Back to School Party this Friday, and I want you to be there."
"Thanks for the offer but,"
"It wasn't an offer. You have to go. You're going whether or not you want to."
-
Friday came by quickly and Stiles has been bugging me non-stop, giving me reasons why I should go. I give him my normal answer, which was no. When school was over, I went straight to my house, then taking a nice, cold shower. As I finish washing myself and change into my comfy pajama (which was wearing a comfy loose shirt with some pajama shorts that hugged my waist perfectly), I lay on my plain white bed. My phone starts to ring from an unknown number. I usually ignore it because who answers phone calls that we don't know who it is? For all we know, it could be a stalker! But, this phone call was calling me, every minute. I get too annoyed by the ringing that I finally answer it.
"What!?"
"Nice to hear that wonderful voice of yours, love."
"Who is this?"
"You don't recognize my voice? It's Stiles!"
"Great! I'm hanging up now."
"Wait, aren't you wondering how I got your number!"
He does have a point. I really want to find out how he got my number, but if this phone call keeps going, it would just lead back to him complaining about me not being at the party.
"Nope. I already knew you were a stalker. I'll just look for your explanation tomorrow—"
I was midway into my sentence when I mom called me downstairs. "Lydia! Get down here! I need your help!"
"Stiles. Gotta go."
Before he could say anything, I quickly hang up the phone and run downstairs.
"Mom! Are you okay?"
"Surprise!" Kira jumped out behind the kitchen table while holding some luggage. "You're favorite person has arrived!"
"KIRA!!!!" I instantly jump to hug her, "I missed you so much!"
"Well, then I have some good news! You're not gonna miss me anymore because I'm moving here! After some serious talks with my parents, they finally let me stay her and got apply to the same school as you!"
"No way! Really! No! Your lying!"
"Why would I bring 500 pounds of luggage if I wasn't staying here?!"
I run up the stairs as Kira struggle to lift her luggage past every step. I was entertained from her misery for a while, when I finally decide to help her. She lays her luggage in the bedroom parallel from my room, then quickly looks for my room. As we finally get to my room, Kira had a distasted look on her face.
"Your room is sooo... boring." She say, pausing as she sees my phone filled with so many missed phone calls. "And who might what to call you at this hour?" She jumps towards the phone to call it again.
"Kira! No! Please! Don't you dare call him!" Her eyes widen. Oh no, why did I say that.
"Him? Okay, I'm soo calling him!" With the perks (well, for her sake) of me having an iPhone is that if you missed a phone call, you can just slide the 'missed phone call notification' to call that person back. Sure, it comes in very handy, but not now!
My phone didn't even ring at least 3 times before Stiles answered!
"Lydia! Okay, before you hang up on me, I have very good reasons on why you should go to my party, like right now!"
"Oh, what party?" Kira says, obviously failing on sounding like me. No matter how hard I try getting my phone back, she has too much of a strong grip to let go.
"The Back to School Party I'm hosting!"
"Oh, yeah! If I go can I bring a friend?"
"Sure! But I thought you said you don't need friends?"
"Who said-" I yank her leg, which made her fall, and her pulling me down as well. My phone was a few feet from each other. We both look at each other and try to stop each other from getting it. In the end, I win.
"Hello? Lydia? You still there?"
I huff then say, "Yeah... Stiles. That was my friend you were talking to. I'm still not going." That's when I end the call.
"Lydia! Let's go! Going to a party is better than staying here and doing nothing."
"Who says that we weren't gonna do anything here?"
"Lydia. I know you. Your just gonna trick me into fixing your room and stuff."
"You can go, but I'm not going anywhere."
-
Somehow, she gets me into my car, but she is the one driving. Just a bunch of 18 year olds in a car, one that looks like neon highlighters puked on her, and the other one wearing pure black.
"Remind me to make you go shopping."
"I feel like a highlighter, Kira! Why couldn't I just wear all black like you!"
"Because you gotta look good for your 'friend.' And I am going to be a spy, watching over you guys."
"First of all, he's not my friend. Second of all, I'm not gonna be around him. I gonna be with you."
"We'll see. And you don't look bad, I mean I love that pink floral shorts paired with that cute white crop top. Don't even get me started on those bright hot pint high heels!"
"These are your clothes! And you don't even know where your going!"
"Yeah I do. I texted your friend and he sent the directions to his house on your phone. And I also put him in your contacts. His name is a bunch of that heart eyed face emoji! Your welcome."
"You what! Wait, where's my phone!!!"
"Somewhere here. I hid it." She says as she unbuckles her seatbelt, a sign that we're here.
I look out the window, and from just one stare, I already knew this was gonna end badly. There were drunk guys puking on the grass, and other people screaming like maniacs.
"I'm not going out. Nope."
"Hey! You guys made it! I thought you guys would have a hard time finding a place to park, but you actually go a good spot. No that far from my house." Stiles says smirking. He looked at me straight in the eyes, then looks at Kira. "I'm guessing that you're Kira, right?"
"Yup. Course you already knew that when I texted you from her phone." She says pointing at me.
"Well," Stiles claps his hands, "Go inside and have fun in the party!"
