BARB HOLLAND HAD DRIVEN BEHIND DJ HENDERSON'S IMPALA AS DJ HAD GOTTEN THE DIRECTIONS FROM NANCY TO STEVE'S HOUSE. DJ was a bit surprised that Barb agreed to come along with her and Nancy to the party since parties weren't really her thing.
They had been a couple of blocks from his house when Nancy exclaims, "Deej, pull over." DJ shot the girl a confused look. "What?" She asked. "Pull over!" Nancy repeated and DJ did a hand signal in her side-view mirror, telling Barb to stop so she wouldn't hit her.
Barb parked right behind DJ and got out of the car and went over to Nancy's side of the car. "What are we doing here? His house is three blocks away." Barb questioned. "We can't park in the driveway." Nancy says. "So, we're gonna park three blocks away from his house? What if my car gets stolen?" DJ questions.
"The neighbors might see." Nancy told. "This is so stupid. I'm just gonna go home." Barb says, going to head back to her car. "No, Barb, wait." Nancy stops the girl. "You promised that you'd go. You're coming." Nancy pointed around each of them. "We're gonna have a great time." She assures.
"He just wants to get in your pants." Barb argues. Nancy shakes her head. "No, he doesn't." She says. "Nance... seriously. He invited you to his house. His parents aren't home. Come on, you are not this stupid." Barb told.
"She's not being stupid, Barb," DJ defends. "She's being a regular teenager, going to parties and all of that shit. And we should be doing the same thing. And besides, this night's gonna be amazing for Nancy if she and Steve do sleep together."
Nancy looks at DJ. "We're not going to sleep together." She stated. "And besides, Tommy H. and Carol are gonna be there."
"Tommy and Carol have been having sex since, like, seventh grade." Barb points out. "She's got a point, this could be a big ass orgy, for all we know." DJ comments.
"Gross." Barb scrunches her face up in disgust.
"Deej." Nancy scolds and looks at her friend in shock.
"I'm just sayin'!" DJ tells, raising her arms in defense.
"All right, well... you guys can be like my guardians. All right? Make sure I don't get drunk and do anything stupid. And we'll do that all for each other." Nancy had gotten her shirt off and she was left with her bra in the car.
Barb looks at Nancy. "Is that a new bra?" She asked.
Nancy looks down. "No."
"Nancy, we went shopping for bras literally a weekend ago." DJ told. "Let's just go." Nancy changed the subject after she had put a shirt on and DJ had locked her car up, closing the windows and such.
She tapped the front of her car like she did every time she got out of it and walked the rest of the way with her friends to Steve's house.
As soon as they approached the house, DJ looked up and said: "Damn, his house is huge." It was at least a story high and was one of the biggest in Loch Nora, definitely.
Once DJ got on the porch, the realization of being at Steve Harrington's party hit her. What if she was gonna get really drunk and make a fool out of herself tonight? What if something happened? Thoughts came flooding in through DJ mind in the minute she stood on Steve's porch.
Nancy rang the doorbell and noticed how tense both DJ and Barb were. "Barb, Deej, chill." Nancy told.
"I'm chill." Barb said.
"Yeah, I'm chill, too. Chill as an ice cube. Chill as anything cold and/or freezer related." DJ commented and she exhales but butterflies crept into her stomach once Steve opens the door.
"Hello, ladies." Steve grinned. "Come on in."
They were led into Steve's backyard and DJ sat in one of the lawn chairs with Barb on her left and Nancy on her right. The shrill, annoying screams of Carol annoyed DJ as Tommy pretended that he was gonna throw Carol in the pool.
DJ continuously checked her watch and desperately wished that JJ could be on time for once. She had turned her head towards Nancy, who was paying attention to Steve, who had poked a hole into the side of his beer fan and chugged the can on the side and finished it in a heartbeat. He sat back in his lawn chair and a single cigarette laid across his mouth.
"Is that supposed to impress me?" Nancy questions, smirking over at the boy. "You're not?" He asks. Nancy chuckles, "You are a cliché, you do realize that?"
"You are a cliché. What with your... your grades and your band practice." Steve said, going to light up his cigarette. "I'm so not in band." Nancy said defensively. "Okay, party girl. Why don't you just, uh, show us how it's done, then?" Steve passes over the thing he used to poke into his can with.
Nancy looks at Steve and then at DJ. "Okay, but only if Deej does it with me." Nancy states and the sound of her own name got DJ's attention.
"What? Why me? Why can't Barb do it?" DJ questions. "I'm so not drinking." Barb told and DJ looks over at Nancy.
"It's not like you're doing it alone." Nancy encouraged and DJ bit her lip in anxiousness and gave in. DJ sighed deeply and said: "Alright, I'll do it. Help me up." Nancy helps DJ up out of the lawn chair and Steve tosses over a beer can over to the Henderson girl.
The Henderson-Wheeler duo stand and Steve hands over another screwdriver for DJ to poke her can with. "You gotta make a little hole right in—"
"I know how to do it, I got it." DJ says. "Yeah, Henderson's smart, you douche!" Tommy sides with DJ, to her surprise and the two girls at the same time successfully make an entrance with the cans and DJ and Nancy start to chug.
Steve, Tommy and Carol all begin to chant: "Chug, chug, chug." for DJ and Nancy. DJ could feel the beer run down her throat. She had to admit, she felt really accepted and she knew that she was only gonna get accepted if she didn't chicken out of chugging.
DJ was the first to finish her beer since she could handle her alcohol. The first time she had ever actually drunken any type of alcohol was when she was visiting family in Toledo and she snuck into her aunt's liquor cabinet at 13.
Nancy had finished just a second after DJ did and DJ cheered and raised her arms in a winning manner. "Winner is Henderson!" Steve cheered and DJ did a little bow and Nancy decided to do one too. "Thank you, thank you, I'll be here all night." DJ said.
"You got any more?" She turned to Steve, who nodded and tossed over another one at DJ. "Dang, you can really handle your alcohol, Henderson." Tommy noted and the girl nodded, "Damn, right." She opened the beer can up and took a gulp out of the can.
Nancy looked over at Barb. "Barb, you wanna try?" Barb almost immediately shook her head. "What? No." Barb declined. "No, I don't want to. Thanks."
"Come on," Nancy told. "If DJ can do it, so can you." She told and Steve agreed with Nancy, persuading Barb to drink. "Nance, I don't want to." Barb told.
"It's fun! Just give it a—"
"Nance..."
"Just... Just give it a shot."
"Just one drink, you'll never have to drink again." DJ states, taking another sip from her next can of beer. She had seen this as a way to get Barb to loosen up a bit and to quit being so uptight. Barb sighed had eventually given in. "Okay." She stands up with the poker and the can in her hand and is ready to start chugging. "So you just..."
Everything was going fine when Barb's hand slipped and she stabbed herself in the hand. DJ saw the blood drop from her hand as Tommy commented: "Gnarly."
DJ began to check out Barb's hand. "Barb, are you okay?" She asked, walking towards her. "Are you okay?" Nancy asked, as if she were reading DJ's mind.
Barb nodded, "Yeah." Nancy looks down at Barb's hand. "Barb, you're bleeding." She stated and Barb looked Nancy in the eyes and said: "I'm fine." Barb's eyes trailed over to Steve. "Where's your bathroom?" She asked and Steve stood up. "Oh, it's... It's, uh, down past the kitchen, to the left."
"Okay, thanks." Barb began to walk into the house and Steve stood to make sure she found the bathroom all right.
DJ could hear the radio clearly in the silence and the song 'I Melt With You' by Modern English had played. She stood up. "Oh my God, I love this song!" DJ cheered and she got on the table and started to dance. She had even decided to open up another can of beer after finishing her last one.
As you could probably tell, DJ was a bit of a lovey, fun drunk who didn't care who was around her and how she acted. She had learned she was like this when sneaking into her aunt's liquor cabinet and when she decided to go to one school party last year.
Before the party could continue, JJ had managed to find his way through the house and backyard. He knocked on the sliding door frame and had received the attention of his acquaintances and friend. "Now, this is not a party." JJ spoke.
"JJ!" DJ had almost fallen off from where she was standing and rushed over to her friend. "Hey, uh, hope you don't mind, I let myself in, Harrington." He looked over and noticed the smug faces of both Carol and Tommy. Steve nods, "No, not at all, man. Come on in." At least Steve seemed accepting.
"Jonesy," Tommy started, walking towards the boy. "What's up, man?" JJ nudges his head toward him. "You selling tonight?" JJ exhales and shrugs, "Sure, if you're buying." JJ held his lunchbox up and went over towards one of the tables.
Tommy looked over towards Steve. "Hey, Steve? You don't mind if we smoke a little tree here, do you?" He asked. "Nah, as long as you don't smoke it in the house. Then, my dad would royally murder me." Steve stated.
"How much?"
"$30."
"$30 for a blunt? How about $10 or $20?"
"$10 or $20 is for my friends," JJ answered. "You and I, good sir, are not." Tommy scoffs at the boy and looks at his girlfriend and laughs. "Come on, we're friends, Jonesy."
"Sorry, Thomas, correct me if I'm wrong, the last time we had a full conversation was when you were in the ninth grade and I was in the tenth about only God knows what." JJ stated. Tommy was clearly annoyed by JJ and looked up at the boy, ready to start a fight. "Oh, yeah, was that before or after you had to retake your sophomore year?"
JJ looked at Tommy carefully, as if he was warning him with his eyes. "What'd you just say?" Before it could escalate further, Steve had come between Tommy and JJ.
"Look, why don't I pay you $30. Seriously, I have no trouble paying." Steve interfered and JJ looked at Steve's cash in his hand as he pulled it out of his wallet. "Yeah, sure, why not? Your money I trust anyways." JJ had muttered that last part.
As JJ collected the money, Steve had managed to calm Tommy down.
You would've never known it but Jack Jones and Steve Harrington were once good friends. Best friends, if you could imagine them that way. They first met in the second grade before JJ got his growth spurt and was always made fun of. Little first grade Steve, who was tall at the time, always stood up for him. He knew he wasn't always fortunate to even have a good lunch with him when it was time to go to the cafeteria. Sometimes, Steve even brought two bologna sandwiches to school.
Then, once JJ hit high school, things change. Steve suddenly peaked in high school and had completely forgotten JJ. The Jones boy didn't blame him, he forgot about him, too. JJ got lost in drugs while Steve had relished in his newfound fame. You would've never guessed that they used to be friends, but they in fact, were.
Seeing that things got quiet, DJ sparked up. "We should totally go skinny dipping!" She insists and Tommy shrugs, "Don't mind if I do." He pushes Carol in unexpected as she has stood near the pool and she screams at her boyfriend and swims up to the surface. "Oh, my, God! What the hell, Tommy?"
Tommy jumped in right after her and Steve pushed Nancy in and DJ took off the clothes she was wearing and jumped in right after Steve had.
The girl swam up and looked over at a dry JJ, trying to roll up the blunt. "Hey, Jayje? Could you help me out of here?" DJ asked, going up to the wall where JJ was at. "Yeah, no, not falling for that." DJ shook her head,
"No, I mean it. I have a cramp. Ow."
JJ stood up as he rolled his eyes and went to go and pull the girl out but DJ drug him out into the pool. "Whoa!" DJ cackled as her plan had worked. JJ came up to the surface and shook his hair out of his face. He splashed DJ. "Deej, what the hell? You bitch!" He laughed and DJ splashed him back. "I'm totally gonna get you back for that."
DJ then looked over at Nancy, who was a bit preoccupied by Steve and both DJ and JJ glanced at each other and decided to grab her ankle underwater to scare her. "You are so dead!" Nancy splashed DJ and JJ with water and Steve called DJ and the girl looked over at him and he tossed Nancy's shoe over her way.
The girl passed it over to JJ, who passed it back to Steve and it went full circle while Nancy played monkey in the middle, trying to get the shoe from her friends and supposed boyfriend.
After the fun and the drinking and whatnot, the group decided to get out of the pool. Steve had gotten towels for everybody. JJ had been lucky that he took his jacket off before "helping" DJ out of the pool. He had taken his long-sleeve off underneath his tee and began to wring it out outside.
Once Steve had handed her a towel, DJ had ruffled her hair in the towel to try and dry it. "I'm freezing." Carol spoke. "Well you did jump in the pool on a November night." DJ thought as she held her towel around her.
"Hmm... well, I hear his mom's room has a fireplace." Tommy told Carol, smirking over at her and DJ made a disgusted face as she shivered. Steve made the same face and looked over at his best friends. "Are you kidding? Okay, well, you know, you are cleaning the sheets."
Carol and Tommy headed upstairs and Steve looked over at Nancy and her friends. "You guys all right?" He asked and everyone nodded. "Yeah." Nancy told. "Come on, let's get you some dry clothes."
Steve began to head upstairs but stopped. "Jones, Henderson, you guys are welcome to sit in the living room if you want." The boy offered but JJ looked over at the tired and still drunk DJ. "Nah, I think someone should drive her home." JJ said, pointing to the tired DJ and she had leaned against his shoulder.
"Yeah, yeah, no problem. Uh, make sure she gets home safe." Steve said, motioning to DJ and JJ holds a 'thumbs-up'. "Will do."
Nancy looks at JJ. "Are you gonna be fine?" She asks, motioning to DJ and he nodded, "Yeah, totally. I've got her." DJ stirs and opens her eyes. "Hey, Nancy?" She slurred and Nancy looks at DJ. "Yeah?" Nancy asked.
There was a pause and DJ shrugged, "I forgot what I was gonna say... but go sleep with Steve. You only live once." She persuaded quietly and Nancy chuckled, heading up the stairs.
"Let's get you out of here, crazy lady. Where'd you park?" JJ asks. "Three blocks away." DJ told. The boy's eyes widen and he's confused. "Three blocks?" DJ shrugged, "I don't know, it was Nancy's idea." The two were about to head out of the Harrington household when Barb had come in and stopped Nancy as she headed up the stairs.
"Where are you going?" Barb asked, curious. Nancy shrugged, "Nowhere. Just... upstairs. To change. I... fell in the pool." She chuckled, motioning to her wet clothes under the towel.
Barb had a sad expression on her face. Nancy had noticed and tried her best to ignore her unnecessary expression. "Why don't you go ahead and go home? I'll just... I'll get a ride or something." She told.
"Nance..."
"Barb... I'm fine." Nancy smiles, hiding it under the towel.
"This isn't you." Barb said.
DJ looks over at Barb, going to defend her friends. "So what?" She spoke. "It's not like she's staying the entire night." Nancy nods, "Yeah, I'm fine. Just... go ahead and go home, okay?" She told as she headed on up the stairs, leaving JJ, DJ and Barb alone.
"Barb, I don't understand why you're never happy for Nancy when she wants to do what she wants to do." DJ told, finally speaking the truth she had held in for a while. Although Barb was her friend, Nancy and DJ had been best friends since day one. She would defend her no matter what. It always seemed like Barb kept having an opinion on Nancy's love life and sometimes it was exhausting to hear. Even though those two were friends, they always seemed to bump heads with one another. "I am happy for Nancy." Barb said and it just seemed unbelievable. DJ scoffed, "Yeah, sure."
JJ had finally decided to walk out of the house and obviously didn't want to start an argument between Barb and DJ and he certainly didn't want to be in the middle of it.
Sometimes, it just annoyed DJ that Barb just didn't seem happy for Nancy because she had been with Steve. I mean, DJ liked Steve but she was still supportive of him and Nancy being together. Before DJ could go on and on about how Barb wasn't happy for Nancy, JJ took her back to her car and began to drive the girl home and checked his watch and saw that it was 11:48.
DJ looked out the window and sighed. "He'd never go for me." She muttered and it got the attention of JJ. "Who? Harrington?" JJ asked.
"No, the Pope," DJ stated. "Yes, Steve." JJ tapped on the steering wheel and sighed. "I mean, Nancy is everything he wants. He looks... happy. It just sucks that I'm never the one."
JJ sent a sympathy smile over at the girl and then said: "Being in a relationship is overrated. Especially with Steve Harrington." He assured. DJ sighed and shrugged, "Yeah, whatever. Sometimes I just wish I was Nancy." She turned over and slept the rest of the way home.
