Episode 6: Single Dipper | Part 4
"What're you doing?" Tambry asked irritability as Dipper ran back and forth across the attic, flinging open drawers and letting clothes and nicknacks spill out onto the floor.
"May I remind you that Wendy is currently down stairs, possibly scaring the heck out of everyone?"
"Aha!" Dipper exclaimed, holding up the Journal that he found wedged between the two mattresses of his bed.
"Hmm. . . I hate to burst your bubble, but now doesn't exactly seem like the best time to catch up on your favorite novel!"
"This isn't just any old book. This journal has everything we need to help- or 'fix' Wendy. . . or whatever." Dipper opened the book and flipped through the yellowing pages before stopping to scan over an entry. He looked up at Tambry.
"And what did you say that glass thing looked like?"
"It was like a glass pyramid. This big." She held up her hands about five inches apart for Dipper to see. He nodded.
"This's gotta to be it." He cleared his throat and read the entry out loud. "'The Personality-Splitting Prism causes whoever possesses the object while cast in direct moonlight to communicate with personified versions of their own individual traits'-"
"-oh! I get it now!" Tambry interrupted. "Wendy was talking like someone else was in the room and her eyes changed color." She shivered. "It was sooo creepy."
Dipper took mental note of Tambry's comment before continuing.
"'But beware, if the possessor has experienced any recent emotional trauma or conflict, said personifications have the ability to take over a human body in order to resolve said conflicts. After the resolution, the possessor should return to normal. If necessary, it is possible to reverse this by getting the original possessor to hold the prism while standing in direct moonlight.'"
Tambry nodded as she processed this new information that she had just heard.
"So we have to get Wendy to hold the prism thingie again? That can't be too hard, right?"
Dipper glanced at his watch. He frowned. "I wouldn't be too confident in that." He showed Wendy the time. "It's been a few hours past midnight. . . the suns coming."
"Then what're we waiting for?" Tambry gestured to the door. "Let's go!"
. . .
Wendy impatiently tapped her fingers against her thigh. She wished she had a watch. Sitting in a void of pure nothingness sure was beginning to get boring. Happiness, Sadness, and Anger sat in silence, awaiting their final fate.
"Shouldn't it be over now?" Wendy asked.
"It depends," Sadness replied. "Were there multiple emotions that took over?"
Wendy groaned. "Yes. . . Envy, Ego, and Insecurity."
"Ugh. I hate them," said anger with a look of disgust. "They're so overdramatic."
"They won't settle back down until they accomplish what they've been wanting to do," Happiness added.
"Well they better hurry up," Wendy muttered. "I'm not sure how much longer I can stand in this place. No offense to you guys."
"None taken," the three emotions said simultaneously.
After a long silence, the sound of screaming filled the air. Everyone looked around for the source of the noise until Envy fell with a thud on the ground.
Her glowing had faded to a less intense green and her clothing no longer appeared similar to Pacifica's. Now she wore just a simple bright green flannel, as if to emphasis that she had accomplished her mission.
She sat up, blowing a loose strand of hair out of her face. She crossed her arms, looking infuriated like a toddler that had been put in time out.
"Pleasure for you to show up," Anger greeted sarcastically.
"Shut up," Envy snapped. "At least I finally got that out of the way. I feel sooo much better with that snob as far away from Dipper as possible."
"Dipper and Pacifica broke up?!" Wendy exclaimed.
"Not yet, but definitely inevitable."
Wendy took a deep breath to try and calm her nerves. All that was left to do was to wait a little longer and let Insecurity and Ego get their job done. She stiffened slightly, feeling sick at the idea of what the last two emotions could have planned.
. . .
"This is where I last saw her." Tambry pointed to the sea of dancing kids and teenagers who had formed a circle around Soos and Robbie, who were currently in the middle what looked like a rap-battle.
Wendy stood in the corner of the room, staring blankly at the audience. Her eyes flashed from purple to orange as Ego and Insecurity fought for control. She quietly talked to herself and her face continued to contort into multiple expressions like a broken animatronic.
Dipper and Tambry slowly approached her until they had Wendy backed into the corner.
No escape. Her eyes finally changed to purple when the emotions became aware of their predicament.
"Oh. . . hey guys. What's up?" Insecurity said.
"Could we talk to you in private?" Dipper asked, hand in his pocket where the prism rested for safe keeping.
Something's not right about this, Ego said.
They have us cornered, what choice do we have? Insecurity replied nervously.
Run! Ego exclaimed.
"Wendy, I know that something is wrong. We just want to talk it out." Tambry noticed Wendy's slight step and took her own step in order to block the potential exit. She was trapped again.
"No thanks."
Wendy shoved past the two and broke into a run across the dance floor. She wove in between people in a carefully planned way that left Dipper and Tambry stuck in the center of the crowd.
She reached the gift shop and scrambled up the latter that reached the roof. The music from the room below was now muffled and overpowered by the faint whistling sound of the wind.
Wendy's eyes flashed a bright orange.
"You idiot!" she screamed. "Now there's nowhere left to run!"
"I'm sorry! I panicked!" Insecurity pulled at Wendy's pigtails as she looked around the roof for a way of escape. It was too late.
Two shadows emerged from the trap door as Tambry and Dipper crawled onto the roof.
"Stop running. We already know who- or what you are and how to stop you. Don't make this harder than it needs to be." Dipper pulled the prism out of his pocket.
Wendy's eyes changed to orange. "You do, huh? And you think it's that easy?"
Tambry and Dipper exchanged unsure glances and a shrug.
"I don't see why not," he replied with snark in his tone.
He nodded to Tamry, who immediately ran to tackle Wendy. She stepped to the side and Tambry fell against the tiles of the roof.
Ego let out an amused cackle as Dipper proceeded towards her from behind. He grabbed her arms and the prism clattered to their feet.
"Didn't think that one through, smart guy?"
Wendy began to kick the prism off the roof, but Trambry snatched it back seconds before her shoe touched the glass.
"I'm not letting you getting away with possessing my best friend," she growled under her breath.
Now Envy and Insecurity were definitely trapped. Tambry held a triumphant grin as Dipper grabbed Wendy's hands and she began to place the prism in her open palms.
"Let. Me. Go!" Ego howled. She writhed and pulled against Dipper's tight grip until she finally broke free. The prism fell from the now empty space and the three watched it fall to the ground below.
"No!" Dipper yelled.
The glass shattered and a rainbow of colors exploded into the sky like fireworks. Wendy laughed now that the two emotions were victorious.
"Didn't we warn you that it wouldn't be easy?" Ego said with an evil smile. "And by the looks of that, I doubt Wendy ever be back!"
"That can't be right. This can't be happening. . ." Tambry stumbled back in shock. She slowly bent down on her knees to stare defeatedly at the shards of their last hope. She clenched her fists.
"Wendy has to be in there somewhere."
"Wendy's gone," Ego sneered before pausing and reaching a hand to clench at her heart. "Wait. Insecurity, do you feel that?"
Her eyes flashed purple.
"Something doesn't feel right."
They both let out a deafening cry, their voices blending together as the colors orange and purple began radiating around Wendy and began to swirl into a blinding vortex of color. The light rose up and exploded in the sky along with the other colors.
Inside the Shack, guests clustered in amazement to look at the fireworks.
Once the light faded, Wendy remained resting on her side.
. . .
"What just happened?" Wendy asked. "Did you hear that?"
Screaming filled the air once again until Ego and Insecurity arrived, falling to the ground just like Envy had before.
"You're all back." Happiness gasped. "Does that mean-"
"-you're glowing!"
"Yeah, I know I'm really excited right now."
Wendy laughed. "No, Happiness. You're literally glowing!"
Happiness looked down at herself to see that her form had been restored to its bright yellow color. She now wore her hair in a braid along with a yellow flannel paired with overalls.
The same had occurred to Sadness and Anger.
Sadness wore her hair in a way so that her eyes weren't visible and she was dressed in a hoodie underneath a blue flannel. Anger wore a tattered bright red flannel along with ripped jeans.
The three gasped and squealed at each others transformations and exchanged hugs and laughs.
Wendy watched it all with a smile on her face and a warm feeling growing in her chest. The smile faded slightly when she saw that she was disappearing. Her hands had turned transparent along with her feet.
The emotions noticed this and suddenly the celebration ceased.
"You're leaving?" Sadness asked.
"Looks like I don't have much of a choice." Wendy laughed.
"It's not like we're never going to meet again," Anger added. "Ya'know, since we're all technically the same person."
"I know that this has all been insane but I'm kinda glad it happened." Happiness smiled. "Catch ya' later."
"Bye everyone!" Wendy said. The other emotions gathered around and waved as her vision grew blurry.
This time when she blinked, Wendy was sitting on the roof of the Mystery Shack. She was surprised to find Tambry hugging her and crying hysterically.
"It's all my fault! I was being so stupid and now she's hurt or dead or-"
"-Tambry?"
"YOU'RE ALIVE!" she exclaimed. She jumped forward again and hugged Wendy even tighter. Wendy hugged her back.
"Yeah, thanks to you guys." She smiled and Dipper stretched out a hand and pulled her to her feet.
"What would I do with my time if you weren't getting yourself into trouble?" Dipper joked. His eyes looked puffy and he turned before wiping his nose with the sleeve of his shirt.
"Are you crying?" Tambry asked.
He looked away and forced a chuckle.
"No. . . okay maybe. Whatever let's get downstairs and grab the first aid kit." Dipper gave Wendy another smile before disappearing down the ladder.
"I totally understand how you have a crush on him." Tambry said with a giggle.
"Shut up," Wendy laughed.
. . .
"Hey, Mabel," Dipper greeted his sister. He grabbed a bottle of water from the color of the snack table and took a long sip before continuing.
"Where's the first-aid kit?"
Mabel turned to him while eating a cupcake.
She gasped and started choking on the food. She gasped. "What the heck happened to you? It looks like you fell off the roof."
"Nearly did," he replied. "It's a long story."
She nodded and grabbed another cupcake.
"The kit's down the hallway, across from the bathroom."
"Thanks."
"And before you go," Mabel added while talking with her mouth full. "Pacifica's been in the bathroom for a while. She ran in there and slammed the door and it's been locked for over an hour."
"Do you know what's wrong?" he asked.
"No clue." Mabel shrugged.
Dipper nodded and tossed the now empty bottle in the trash.
"Thanks, I'll go check on her."
"Catch ya, later bro!"
Dipper continued across the room until he arrived to the hallway. He paused at the bathroom door and knocked twice.
"Paz? It's me. Is everything okay?" He pressed his ear up against the wood to hear sobbing. It stopped once she heard his voice.
"I don't know," Pacifica's muffled voice replied.
"Whatever it is, I'm sure we can talk it out."
"Dipper-"
"-please?"
Pacifica sniffed loudly and the doorknob began jiggling as she unlocked the door. When she stepped out, she wiped the dripping mascara from under her eyes and crossed her arms.
"So. . .?"
"How come you never talk about your exes?"
Dipper stared at her blankly. "What makes you ask?"
"Candy's one of my best friends and you never told me." Pacifica's voice shook.
"Yes, we dated for a few months a few years ago. It's not a big deal."
"If it's not a big deal then why haven't you told me?"
"Because. . . I don't know." Dipper sighed. "I just didn't want to risk it coming between us. I'm sorry."
"So then who else have you not told me about?" Pacifica pressed.
"There's been a few. . . but it shouldn't matter! It's all in the past!"
"If you and Candy only lasted a few months, how long will we, huh? This is our last summer together and it. . . it doesn't feel any different." Pacifica turned away to let more tears fall before continuing.
"You're always busy with these mystery hunts and solving cases and family stuff."
"I don't understand what you're saying," Dipper said.
"We don't have much time left, so why do we keep pretending like everything's going to stay like this?"
Dipper closed his eyes and shook his head, as if trying to wake himself up from a nightmare.
"What're you saying? That we should break up? That's insane! Being together has been amazing so why should we waste these last few months?"
"I'm sorry. . . ." She let out a choked sob.
"It's for the best."
Dipper grabbed her arm before she could run away.
"Paz, calm down and think about this. This can't be what you want."
Pacifica didn't meet his eyes. She stared at the floor and watched her tears fall to her feet. Dipper finally gave up, let go of her arm, and
swallowed the lump in his throat as he watched her leave.
. . .
Tambry handed Wendy another bandage.
"So what was it like?"
"Being possessed by your own emotions? It was terrifying," Wendy said with no hesitation.
"Well," Tambry said. "At least it's over now."
Wendy gave her friend a weak smile in response before greeting Soos, who had just arrived in the room, wearing an oversized, plastic crown.
"What's with the hat?" she asked.
Soos adjusted it when the crown fell over his eyes. He laughed. "Guess who won the ultimate party competition against Robbie?"
"Woah! Seriously?" Tambry exclaimed. "That's awesome!"
Soos nodded. "That guy really needed to be put in his place."
"Agreed," Wendy added. She made a face when she accidentally bumped her scraped elbow against the cash register.
"Hey, champ!" Stan exclaimed when he entered the room. He picked up the crown from Soos's head and inspected it.
"Plastic gold." He shook his head. "What a shame."
Stan gave the crown back to Soos before realizing that Wendy was in the room.
"Woah! What happened to you? Did you get hit by a truck?" he joked.
"It's kind of a long story. . ."
"Does it have anything to do with leaving some kids in charge of the ticket booth?"
Wendy paused, knowing that she had been caught red-handed. Unless she could come up with some tall tale of an excuse on the spot. In the middle of thinking, she saw Pacifica storming through the other room while wiping away tears.
Wendy slipped off of the stool and stared after her, having a feeling that something was terribly wrong.
"Kid!" Stan exclaimed. "Where do you think you're going?"
Wendy was too distracted to look back while she spoke. "Sorry, Stan. I gotta go. It's important."
She stepped into the room and began running after Pacifica, who had left the back door wide open. Wendy's eyes had to adjust to her new, dark surroundings. If it weren't for the light of the moon, she could've compared the dark sky to the place she had been trapped in less than an hour ago.
When she took another step, she heard a crackling sound and felt something breaking under her foot. Wendy moved her boot to the side to see a shard of the prism glowing on the ground. The very last bit of color flickered before extinguishing like a flame.
When she looked back up, Pacifica had nearly gotten to the edge of the parking lot.
"Hey, Pacifica!" Wendy called out. Pacifica was walking surprisingly fast so she was nearly running in order to catch up.
"Pacifica! It's me, Wendy"
Pacifica finally stopped. Her tears shimmered under the light cast by the moon. She shot Wendy a glare.
"What?"
Wendy paused for a second, confused by Pacifica's reply. She stopped before replying to catch her breath.
"I just wanted to say that I'm not really sure what happened tonight but if I ever did anything or said anything to you, then I'm sorry."
"Thank you."
"It's just, there's been a lot on my mind lately and- wait, what?"
"You opened my eyes to what wasn't really there anymore. Between him and me," Pacifica said in a bitter tone, still not making eye contact. "What you said was true. Thanks."
Wendy hesitated to say anything more.
"Uh. . . you're welcome, I guess."
Pacifica continued to walk away, but stopped after a few steps. She stared up at the moon.
"And if you could tell Dipper something for me. . ." She turned, her eyes flashing red for a split second. "Tell him that something's coming."
Wendy blinked in hopes that she was imagining things, but Pacifica had already turned around to continue her silent march into the woods. She was gone.

A/N
Time to play a game called: Find Where Cath Foreshadowed This and Try to Guess Where the Plot is Going ! ! !
(Something big is coming, kiddos)
And I'm very very pleased to announce that according to my schedule, the Summerween chapter, which might just be a short, will be available sometime later in October- perfect for the spoopy season. ;P
I have a recurring theme of doing random Q&A's based on holiday themes so why not hold a character Q&A for Halloween??
Leave any questions for characters in the comments- and this time I'm hoping to do it as a full-length character instead of just a list or like a script. ;)
