It was an early, sunny morning and it had been no more than an hour into her shift when Wendy had fallen asleep. She was woken by a sudden stream of Smile String that hit her in the face. Mabel laughed at Wendy's reaction.
"Good mornin' sleeping beauty! Ready to party tonight?"
Wendy wiped the string from her face and picked it off from the fabric of her shirt.
"What're you talking about?"
"Mr. Pines is throwing a party!" Soos chimed in. He had just arrived in the room, carrying a stack of fliers that was nearly twice his own height. He handed Wendy a flier before walking to the other side of the room to begin handing them to customers.
"And this is happening tonight? Sweet!" Wendy exclaimed. She was mainly glad that she would finally have a chance to spend some time with her friends. After everything that had happened in the past two weeks, Wendy decided that she could use a break.
"I know, right?" Mabel said. "Finally, a chance for me to invite Candy and Grenda over!"
Wendy laughed. "I guess everyone's taking the opportunity to hang out with their friends, huh?"
Dipper entered the room while yawning and gripping a mug of coffee. His wrinkled plaid shirt had only been buttoned lopsided and the collar was popped. His hair stuck out in different directions, making his overall appearance give off the vibe that he had just rolled out of bed.
"Who did you invite tonight, Dips?" Mabel asked.
"Huh? Oh yeah, the party. To be honest. . . I totally forgot that was tonight. I've been up all night doing research on folklore about a lake monster." He shrugged. "I guess I'll just invite Paz. It's not like I have anyone else to hang out with."
Wendy had to restrain herself from scrunching up her nose in disgust at the sound of the name. But at this point, she had become used to Pacifica's presence. Besides, it's not like there was ever a chance that she'd end up with Dipper anyways.
"Do you guys think I would make a good DJ?" Soos asked curiously as he eyed the keyboard in the corner of the room.
"Of course you would," Stan replied to Soos. "But that's some expensive equipment, so I'm putting Mabel and her friends in charge."
Soos pouted and turned to Mabel.
"Could I still pick out the music?"
Mabel smiled. "Sure thing, buddy."
"Sweet! I've got the perfect mix tape I've been working on!" he exclaimed happily. "I'll run to my Abulita's house and grab 'em."
Once Soos had left the room, Stan turned to face the others that remained. He absentmindedly tapped a pencil against the surface of a checklist attached to a clipboard.
"Now that we've got the music handled, who would like to volunteer to be in charge of the ticket booth?" he asked.
Dipper looked up from his phone from texting Pacifica and adjusted his sitting position on the couch. He shrugged.
"Sorry, Stan. I've already invited Paz over."
"Perfect," Stan replied. "Then you two can run it together."
"Come on, Stan!" Dipper exclaimed. "Pacifica would hate that. There's gotta be something else I could do."
"Nope. Sorry, kid. Everything's full," replied Stan.
Wendy raised a hand in the air before she even had the chance to fully process what she had overheard.
"I'll run the ticket booth!"
Stan raised an eyebrow. "You sure? It'll just be you and the ticket booth. All night. No backing out."
Wendy shrugged. "Sure. No problem."
Dipper triumphantly punched a fist in the air.
"Yes! Thanks, Wendy!" He jumped out of his seat and raced to the stairs. "I'll be getting ready if you need me!" he shouted.
Wendy was sure that she'd find a way to make it work out. She could balance work and having fun for just one night. How hard could it be?
