Always Gonna be Behind
Alisa is a bank teller at the Economy Exclair Bank. All these banks are built with black marble and rise so incredibly high that they reflect the sun painfully into the eyes of everyone stupid enough to look up. Alisa never looks up, but she's one of the few who always looks forward. She's always taking the world in for what it is, and you can trust that it's not pretty.
When a client opens the double doors to one of these banks, the host and the security personnel greet them. All staff members wear banana-yellow tailcoats and powdered wigs. Once the clientele inhales the lobby's air, they are bombarded with freshly ground coffee and the aromas of chocolate and cinnamon. Apart from the coffee, the scents ripple off the many unique jars people hold because each jar contains a deposit or a withdraw.
The chocolate is from the Chocolate Chip Cookies, which allow you to feel five minutes of absolute fun, and the cinnamon comes from the Oatmeal Raisins, which enable you to be energetic for ten minutes. These are the most common form of currency, and if someone is well off, these cookies pay the rent and food.
Today Alisa walks in and notices the air is heavy with the fragrances of nutmeg and burnt nightshade, meaning very important people have made withdraws. Nutmeg is found in Ginger Snickerdoodles, and nightshade is found in Earl Grey Macaroons. Ginger Snickerdoodles will give you the ability to forget a selective memory, and the Earl Grey Macaroons allow a person to die peacefully.
Having an abundance of these specialties allows a person to buy a home, car, or run a business. Alisa has never been able to save even one Snickerdoodle, let alone a macaroon in all her life. She lives in a run-down two-story complex, and sometimes she's behind twenty rounds a month for her rent. Luckily, it seems she will finally be even with her landlord this month. She only has to get through today and get paid.
"Alisa!" A young girl with blond winglets runs to her and wraps her clingy hands around her newly pressed coat.
"Watch yourself, Prudence! I just got this back-" she stops speaking as she notices Pru's tears.
"Why are you crying?" She asks with a gentle tone.
Pru whimpers, "The F.L.O.U.R sank twenty-five points today."
F.L.O.U.R stands for Federal Levey of Unique Magical Revenue. It's the money maker and distributor of all rounds. A drop in the market means many rounds have just been wasted as an investment. No wonder there are so many who have taken their cookies back; obviously, they don't want the bank to take them if the market keeps dropping.
"I'm broke," her friend breaks down horribly.
Without overthinking, Alisa takes out twenty rounds and hands them to Prudence, "Pay me back next month."
She shakes her head as her friend hugs too fiercely and tries not to worry about being behind again.
