If Kat Maybank could speak to sixteen year-old Kathryn Elizabeth Darcy, she would do so with a tenderness that she did not yet have in herself.

What was there to say, at that time? She had her ear clogged with grief and a tongue so sharp she cut herself with it. She could not even reach her – buried in a grave that felt like home, stuck in a room where familiarity was as much a knife as any blade.

And yet, Kat doesn't shy away from who she was. Why would she? It's because of her that she made it this far, that she could be this soft today. It's because of her that she survived.
