Chapter 7

Hours went on by as my mind was focused on the bow and the steps of Damion. He paced around the house and sometimes out into the ruins beyond, but he never lept into the forest without me watching or "following" him.

It was clear that he was begging for attention. So I decided to torture him by not even giving him a glance. Numerous times he tried to start up a conversation, but I always ignored.

I got an idea for the bow and wanted to diagram and try to work it out on paper before a fiddled with it. With a pencil in hand and a piece of paper on the metal table, I started scribbling down the idea and figuring everything out. Damion decided that he was extremely interested in what I was doing and looked over my shoulder.

His breathing on my neck was irritating and the stance he took over me was infuriating! I sucked it up for a while... until he decided that I needed help and started to point is finger at the page. Before he got a word out, I quickly grabbed his wrist and looked at him. "Don't," I said, angrily, and shoved his arm back at him. He shut up and stepped back.

If he wasn't invading my space, I was a happy camper.

I stopped writing, set down my pencil, and went to look through the boarded window, behind me. The sun was low and I decided that I shouldn't let that rabbit go to waste. I went and grabbed the rabbit as Damion was following me. I went outside and made a fire. After that, I skinned the animal and tore it into pieces. From there, I cooked the animal and before eating it, I thanked it for dying for my own needs.

I took a leg of it and ate it slowly, savoring every bit of it. Damion came over to me and sat diagonal to me. "Can I have some food?" He asked shyly. I shrugged and handed him a leg. He ate alongside me.

We ate in a comfortable silence. The sun went down as I ate a bit more, along with Damion. The meat would have rot if it weren't cold. It was today or never to eat it.

I look up to the stars, remembering why I am here. I look up to where Star's star was supposed to be. It wasn't there. It hadn't been since he died. There was an empty space within the black-less void. All the stars stayed the same: bright and big.

Star had explained that there are millions like him, and when someone dies, they live in a place called The Year's Memory. He said it was where a star lived their happiest moments over and over again. He said it was a joyful place of remembering.

But he also said, that if a star does any act of humanity, this gift is taken away forever. It was known as a horrible act to become human. Not only that, it was illegal too. It takes a long time to become human and is only granted by moon spirits called Moon Children.

Star also told about the history of the star people and the Moon Children. The leaders are the people who helped with the process of life on their orbiting or orbited planet.

Most people think that the sun is an elegant woman, full of grace and purity. But it isn't. The Sun was a brutal man filled with an emotionless rage. He took no pity on others and raised armies.

The Moon, on the other hand. Was a beautiful lady. She shy and loving. She couldn't hurt a fly, but she was in an endless mode of pain and sadness that was cursed upon her. She always held her hands close to her chest and cried an endless tear.

The star people, the subjects of the Sun, where peaceful and happy people. While the Moon Children were tricksters; horrible people that killed for fun and as a game. They took pride in watching others suffer and tricked othering into harming.

In the corner of my eye, I saw Damion get up and go towards my house.

I continue to look at the dark sky and wonder and replay everything. I hum a tune that only existed in a joyful time. A time where I didn't have to go through this war. A time where I would still be sitting next to Star. A time where my dad was telling me how much he loved me. A time where I was happy.

But that was lost several upon several years ago. It will never come back, and I know that. I just want to protect what I had and can still have. I want to protect Star.

I sit, laying against the night air, looking up to the galaxy that is intertwined with fate. Today is the day where I and my past start to run a race. Only time can tell if I let my past catch up to me.

Up there, in the heavens, there is a parade, waiting for me. They march for Life and welcome the old and say goodbye to the new. My dad is marching, Star is marching, my mom is marching, Elizabeth and her husband is marching, Jackson, Hannah, and Sydney are all marching up there. They are munching in the black parade and when I join it, they all will be welcoming me with open arms.

My dreams are wild and my sight is wearing off. I am sleeping and nothing is waking me up.
