He was a coward.
There he was, looking at the love of his life, and he had choked.
He couldn't even bring himself to stay for more than five minutes.
What the hell was wrong with him?
Mingi marched down the street, hands shoved in his pockets and head bowed as he mentally scolded himself.
How was he supposed to make everything right if he couldn't even talk to the man he loves?
"Because he's not the man you knew." Mingi sighed heavily and leaned against a wall.
It looked like Hongjoong, but it wasn't the Hongjoong he had come to remember.
This Hongjoong was cold and calculating.
This was going to be so much harder than he ever imagined.
"I should have never pressed that damn button!" Mingi tilted his head back and yelled into the night sky. It was a thought that crossed his mind on an almost daily basis now, but he knew he never truly meant it...
If he hadn't pushed the button, there was no saying what kind of fresh hell he would be in right now.
At least now he had the chance to try and make everything right.
Mingi pulled out his phone and pulled up the information he had managed to gather thus far.
If he couldn't start with Hongjoong, then maybe he could recruit someone else. Or at least try to.
Although he wasn't sure how easy it was going to be. But he knew he had to try. He would never forgive himself if he didn't.
So the next day, Mingi walked casually into a large parking garage and when he noticed no one was around, he pulled out a folding lock pick and jammed it into the keyhole of a black suv. Jiggling it back and forth, Mingi glanced over his shoulder one more time and pulled the door open.
After slipping into the front seat, he pulled out a thin block of silver and a special lighter. He used it to heat up the silver so it was soft enough to mold, then slowly fed it into the keyhole of the car so it took on the shape of the key.
It hardened in a matter of seconds, so he needed to act fast, but he was able to turn it and start the car.
With his new ride, Mingi made his way to the east side of town.
The houses became more and more run down the further he got. It was easy to see that there wasn't a lot of money here.
Several people glanced at him as he drove by, but Mingi kept his eyes focused on the road.
When he found the house he was looking for, his heart ached at the sight of it. Someone who cared about their home would never let it turn into this.
The yard was full of weeds and the paint on the house was peeling and chipping.
"What happened to you?" Mingi whispered. He pulled to a stop and slowly exited the car.
The curious eyes of neighbors followed his every move, making his nerves skyrocket, but there was no way he could back out now.
Taking a deep breath, Mingi knocked on the front door several times. His other hand stayed in his trench coat packet, wrapped around a knife and ready to defend himself if the situation called for it.
There was no answer, so he tried again.
And a third time.
Just as he was about to leave, the door opened wide. "What the fuck do you what? Does it look like I want fucking visitors?!" The man on the other side yelled at him. His brown hair was disheveled and sticking up in all directions, his eyes had dark rings under them, and he looked thin. Too thin.
"Yunho?" Mingi asked.
If the other was surprised that Mingi knew him, he didn't show it. He just moved to close the door.
Mingi slammed his hand against it to hold it open. "Wait, please. I know you don't recognize me, but I really need to talk to you. It's important. Please."
"I don't have time for some sniveling story. If it's about some supposed debt, then tell your boss to come to me directly and not send some collector." Yunho tried once more to close the door.
But Mingi wasn't going to give up that easily. He surged forward and grabbed the cuff of Yunho's shirt and forced him into the house. "Now listen here. I am stronger than you and more quick witted. You're going to sit down and listen to what I have to tell you, because by the looks of things your life is shit and all I want to do is make it better!"
Yunho's eyes grew wide, but he led Mingi force him onto his tattered couch and sat still.
"Thank you. Sorry if I startled you, but this isn't easy for me and honestly I am starting to panic a little bit." Mingi took a deep breath and looked down at the man he used to call his friend.
What the hell was he supposed to say now?
"Do... Do you recognize me? At all?" He asked, pulling the hat off his head and letting his red hair free.
Yunho stared at him for a long moment, but crossed his arms and shook his head. "No. Did we race or something?"
Even though he had been expecting it, the statement still crushed Mingi. He really was alone in this life...
He let out a long sigh and looked around the room trying to find a way to start. "There's no easy way to do this, and I know I'm going to sound crazy, but we do know each other." Mingi looked at Yunho. "I know you from a different life. We used to be friends."
"Yeah, right. I don't have any friends." Yunho scoffed. "Now get out of my house."
"I can prove it to you. I know things about you I'd be willing to believe no one else knows." Mingi held up his hands to keep Yunho from rushing at him.
"You're crazy. Why are you even here? Do you want money? I don't have any! And you sure as hell aren't getting my car!" Yunho stood up and glared at Mingi.
A small smile crossed his face. "So you still drive?"
"What do you mean still?"
"You're the best damn driver I know, although you're scary as hell." Mingi chuckled and rubbed the back of his neck. "You and Hongjoong both liked the thrill of the road." His tone grew sad and he dropped his hand.
"Who's Hongjoong?" Yunho asked, a questioning looked crossed his face, but it was curious too.
"He was your best friend."
"I already told you, I don't have friends."
Mingi nodded. "Not in this life." This was going to be so much harder than he thought. There was no sign of recognition in his eyes.
"Why do you keep saying that?"
"God I never thought this would be so hard!" Mingi growled and laced his fingers behind his head. "We used to be friends. You were a police officer along with Hongjoong and you recruited myself and five other criminals to form a task force to try and take down the mafia. But we failed... They won, and their leader had created a machine that sent us back in time. I only remember because I was in contact with the machine. So now I'm here trying to get the team together again to try and fix everything."
Silence fell over them for a long moment, then Yunho burst out laughing. "Do you have any idea how crazy you sound? That is the most ridiculous thing I've every heard! What are you on? What drugs are you taking?" Yunho gripped his stomach and slapped his leg.
Once more, Mingi felt the sting of rejection. He'd known it would be difficult, but that didn't stop his heart from hurting.
But he had one thing he could use.
It would be risky, but he was desperate.
"I can prove that I know you." He said, dropping his arms to his side. His voice also dropped to the point where it could barely be heard.
Yunho was still smiling and shaking his head. "Oh yeah? And how is that?"
"Where's Yuri?"
The air grew thick instantly. Yunho's entire demeanor changed and he squared his shoulders. A dark look crossed his face. "What did you just say?"
Mingi tilted his head back, trying to show that he was still in charge here. "Where's Yuri? What happened to her?"
Yunho roared at him and ran forward. The two of them tumbled to the ground and suddenly Yunho's hands were clasped around Mingi's throat. His eyes were wide and shaking, almost like he was possessed.
"Yun... Ho..." Mingi rasped, trying to push the other off him.
"HOW DO YOU KNOW ABOUT HER?!"
"Pl... Ease..."
"TELL ME!!!"
Mingi's eye lids fluttered and his vision started to go black. He was going to fail before he even began... Yunho's rage made him too strong...
Suddenly gunfire erupted from outside.
Yunho's head flew up and he rolled to the side to hide behind his couch, leaving Mingi to clutch at his own throat and gasps for air.
"Dammit. What have you done?!" Yunho yelled.
Mingi just coughed and dragged himself across the floor.
"No one knows I live here, so they only reason behind this has to be you! You fucking idiot! What did you do?"
"C-Car..." Mingi gasped.
Yunho poked his head out from behind the couch to look out the front window. "For the love of god, you stole a Pack car! I should really kill you right now, but you're going to help me get out of here, and then I'm dumping your ass over the next bridge." Yunho grabbed the back of Mingi's shirt and led him to his kitchen.
Then he started shoving his refrigerator aside. Mingi just stared for a moment, then moved to help. He was stunned to see a giant bag full of cash hidden in a hole in the ground.
Neither of them spoke as Yunho grabbed the bag and ran for a side door, then down into his garage. He slipped into the most beautiful car Mingi had ever seen and revved the engine. "Get in! Or I'm leaving you behind!"
Once they were both in and buckled, Yunho pressed the button to open the garage.
Several people could be seen gathering behind them and pointing their guns.
A normal person would stop and get out of the car.
Yunho just smirked and slammed his foot on the pedal.
The car rocketed backward, causing several people to dive out of the way, and slipped easily into the street, where he proceeded to spin it in a circle. The tires squealed at the strain, making Mingi wince.
His heart was already racing from the adrenaline, but it sped up even more when Yunho shifted the gear and sped forward in one smooth motion. He slipped down in his seat and braced himself against the door as if that would protect him.
Nothing phased Yunho though.
Not even the train of cars that started to follow him.
He blew through red lights as if they meant nothing at all. Weaving in and out of traffic came without blinking and he could take a sharp turn by shifting gears and turning the wheel just right.
It was like he and his car had become one, and the stone cold look of concentration in his eyes was something Mingi had never seen before.
And yet there was also a spark of the Yunho he knew. The man who loved the thrill of driving.
That's all this was right now. A game of cat and mouse.
Yunho was easily winning. With the car being so low to the ground, he could slide under semi trucks as he continued to speed through the city.
One by one, the cars pursuing them were caught in traffic or lost him when he slipped into a side alley.
Mingi stayed frozen in place the entire time just praying that he was going to live through this. He never understood how Yunho enjoyed driving like this, he found cars so unpredictable and dangerous. But in Yunho's hands...
It was like nothing could touch them.
They escaped unscathed after little over an hour of speeding through the city.
Yunho pulled into some dingy parking lot behind an abandoned building and immediately silenced his engine while patting his steering wheel. "Well that was fun." He said, then let out one soft chuckle when he saw the look of horror on Mingi's face.
They sat for a moment to collect themselves and Mingi started to mull over how he was going to get Yunho on his side.
In the blink of an eye, Yunho's face hardened and he pulled out a gun hidden in his door and pointed it at Mingi's head while cocking it. "I'm done having fun. How the fuck do you know about my sister? Start talking."
