The next couple of weeks passed in almost a blur for the group of eight. Things were still uneasy between them, but they pushed past it to try and come up with a solid game plan.
Or... as much of a game plan as they could.
In the mix of things, Yunho felt a little lost. He didn't really know how to fight, he wasn't some high tech genius like Yeosang, all he could do was drive... So he became a bit of a middle man and just lent his help to whoever needed him at the time.
A lot of it ended up being with Yeosang and San. The hacker had acted like a giddy school boy when Hongjoong showed him all the gear he had set aside to sell and made quick work of setting up another command station to start observing the area. There were several drones, infrared cameras, motion detectors, and motion sensors that he had access too.
Yunho ended up setting a few of them up around the perimeter of Hongjoong's shop after he and Jongho cleaned everything up. It still needed to stay open during the day, so when Hongjoong wasn't down helping him, he was up there manning the counter like normal to keep up the pretense that nothing had changed.
Yeosang had set up alarms to be set off if anything was triggered and always had at least two drones flying above the city to keep an eye on things.
When he wasn't watching those, he was fiddling with San's headband.
Whatever he had done had worked, because San was starting to remember a few things and he hadn't heard the voices in his head for several days now.
Yunho hated hearing about those... He couldn't imagine what it would be like to have someone ordering him around like that and he was so thankful that Yeosang had managed to fix it.
Right now San was sitting in a chair with his eyes closed. The headband wasn't on, and hadn't been for almost a half an hour now, so he was trying to keep his head clear.
"I'm almost done." Yeosang said as he poked the microchip on the head back with a soldering gun. He was trying to add a protective layer around it just in case it fell off San's head or he tripped and fell. "Are you doing ok?"
"Mmmmm... It's fuzzy." San muttered, scrunching up his forehead.
Yunho reached out and took his hand. "Just a little longer, Sannie. You're doing so good."
The younger opened his eyes and locked onto Yunho. A peaceful look crossed his face and he instantly relaxed. Ever since they had been together, Yunho was the only thing that would help San stay calm during these visits with Yeosang.
After the first one, the headband had only been off for a minute when San started muttering to himself and shaking his head.
It was a horrible sight to see and Yeosang had immediately stopped what he was doing to replace the band on San's head.
They then took the next several minutes to talk about what had happened, and San said it was like someone was trying to force their way into his head.
"They must be constantly scanning for you." Seonghwa said from where he appeared in the corner. He stepped forward, sporting a face of concern, but stopped when San stood up and glared at him.
"Oh you think?" San growled. "I wonder why that is?"
Seonghwa gave him a defeated look and just nodded his head before leaving.
They hadn't really spoken since.
Yunho could understand why though. For Seonghwa to know about this... it made his stomach churn. If it wasn't for the mission he'd give Seonghwa a piece of his mind. And fist.
But they needed to try and keep the peace.
And everyone managed to do it in their own way. The different couples kept to themselves for the most part. Mingi and Hongjoong, when they had time, would often huddle in a corner to go over supplies and maps of the city. Seonghwa and Wooyoung were constantly training. The younger was getting deadly with knives, so he would be a big help during any kind of combat.
The only ones that were different were Yeosang and Jongho. It was obvious that they were fighting, but no one knew them well enough to try and give any advice or intervene. But Jongho was constantly doing whatever he could to step up and help the others. Hongjoong had 'hired' him on as a 'part-time' worker for the store too so that he could spend more time with everyone else down below.
"There." Yeosang nodded a couple of times and examined the small silver square.
"Is there a way to just... permanently attach it?" San asked while fitting the headband into place. "It slips around sometimes and really, it squeezes my head and can be a little distracting."
Yeosang sat back in his seat and stared at the ceiling. "I mean, I suppose there could be with where technology is at. But it would mean surgery. And I'd have to come up with a way to make it detachable so I could still perform maintenance on it."
"Well and, I had the thought of if we are fighting, it could fall off or someone could grab it and then I'd be screwed."
"Wait." Yunho shook his head and held up his other hand. "Surgery?"
"I've had that thought too." Yeosang said to San, then he looked up at Yunho. "Yeah, surgery. I've been looking at some designs. I think I could take out a little piece of skin right about the chip in San's brain and attach a base. It would need to be sewn in or maybe cauterized or something... just something to keep it there permanently. And then I could take that chip, or make a new one, that would fit right in, probably magnetically, and be done with it. That way it could be hidden and be more comfortable for San."
"What?! Are you crazy?" Yunho looked down at San with wide eyes.
"Yes." The younger smirked but then chuckled. "To me that sounds better than this stupid thing. And I don't need a scan or anything to tell me that the other chip is never coming out... I've already been through one surgery that I don't remember, so why not another?"
"But-"
"It's not like I'm doing a heart surgery." Yeosang laughed. "He will be ok. Plus it's his decision."
"There's no need to decide. I think we should do it." San said, never taking his eyes off Yunho. "I don't ever want to hurt you, and I'm afraid that I will if I keep using this thing."
Yunho felt his heart skip a beat and he bent over to connect their foreheads. "I just want you safe, always."
"And this will help with that."
Yeosang cleared his throat and spun around to face his desk again. "Alright lovebirds. Why don't you two go for a perimeter drive and check on my cameras and the warehouse."
"The warehouse?" Yunho asked, tilting his head a little.
The hacker bowed his head and his shoulders fell slightly. "I don't have access to my cameras there anymore, so I'd like to know if it's still looking ok or if we need to try and clear it out or something. Please?"
When he wouldn't turn around to look, Yunho knew Yeosang's thoughts had strayed to Jongho. "Of course. Do you need anything else while we are out?" All he received was a shake of the head.
He and San left the room holding hands and went to check with everyone else to see if there was anything they needed. The last was Mingi, who was currently working by himself sorting bullets. "No, but take a talkie with you and let us know if you come across anything suspicious. Be safe." He flashed a grim smile.
"Don't worry, we will." Yunho clapped him on the shoulder, then made his way to the stairs.
He had to keep his car parked a few blocks over to not draw attention to their area. Hongjoong was nice enough to rent them a garage to use there for vehicles, so Yunho's unique paint job was out in the open either. It had been mentioned that he should think about changing it, but Yunho had put a lot of time into his car and that was the last thing he wanted to do if he could avoid it.
San happily slid into the passenger seat and buckled up, then immediately took Yunho's hand and laced their fingers together.
Yunho felt a blush come to his cheeks and his lips quirked up in a lopsided smile as the Illusion roared to life. He pulled out quickly and pressed the gas pedal to zoom down the street. They wove in and out of the other cars without a care in the world.
They knew the locations of all the cameras, so all they needed to do was drive by and make sure there was nothing blocking their sight or to check and see that it didn't look like they had been tampered with.
On their way to the last one, Yunho glanced in his mirrors and tensed.
"What is it?" San asked.
"We are taking a detour." Yunho's voice was cold and sharp. There were two black cars driving right next to each other and they had turned with him twice now.
He purposefully turned away from the last camera while San tuned the walkie talkie. "Yeosang? Come in. Yeosang!"
"I'm here." The hacker answered. "I have drones on your location now. They've been following you for about ten minutes now."
"Any info on them?"
"No. But they are Pack cars, I'd bet anything. Be careful."
Yunho ground his teeth together and shifted gears on his car before pressing the gas pedal flush to the floor. The action slammed both of them back into their seats, but he was able to speed again.
Each simple, smooth turn of the wheel had the car gliding over the pavement.
Yunho was in complete control as he slipped back into his speed racer mindset. A few flicks of his wrist and switches on the dashboard had the windows darkening to protect against any kind of glare. A low light glowed around the base of the car, providing enough light inside for him to see everything, but none of it would escape if he needed to pul into a dark place. It was the perfect camouflage.
"Hold on." He said.
"Don't worry." San had a hard look in his eyes too. He knew what needed to be done.
Another glance in his mirror told him the cars had no problem keeping up with him. His heart started to race when two more cars pulled in behind him. He wanted to question how they knew to follow him, but he wasn't exactly trying to blend in. Yunho had faith in his abilities and knew he could ditch them. He just needed the right opening.
And he looked like he was going to get it. The intersection in front of him had a few semi trucks getting ready to drive by. If he could sneak through them, the cars behind him would be forced to stop and he could find a place to hide.
Once more, he shifted gears and sped ahead.
San let out a little whine next to him and braced himself against the seat.
"Be careful." Yeosang's voice came over the walkie talkie. "If you get through, take a sharp left, there's an abandoned market street back there."
They were almost there.
The semis had left an almost perfect gap between them. He just needed to squeeze through.
Just a little more.
Yunho was about to swerve through them when a black truck appeared from the side, driving out of an alley, and slammed into the passenger side of his car.
