Part 3: The Storm

Tanner knew all of his companions. He's known them all of his life and they've known him all of his life. They've known the emerald-eyed, brown-haired, freckle-faced person all of their lives. It would be devastating if he lost a friend, or if they lost him. He pushed away the thought instantly. The Sailtrain chugged on, it's wheels scratching against the steel rail. Tanner sat back in his seat, watching Savannah and Kieran scan the horizon for any bad weather. He knew Mason was in the cabin self-talking himself to go on. He was always like that. It's as if from the moment he was born, he was struggling to go on and always needed reassurance. Tanner smiled at the thought, but that smile was short-lived as stormclouds appeared up ahead.

"Look alive, guys! Stormy Coast dead ahead!" yowled Captain Kieran for everyone to hear.

Mason jumped out of the hatch to the cabin like a rabbit from a badger set.

"We're here?! ALREADY?!"

Captain Kieran replied with authority, "Yes, but we need to remain calm. Everyone get down to the cabin. You'll be safe down there. I'll drive through the Coast. Just wait for my signal to come back out again."

Tanner nodded, "You can count on me to keep them in line, Kieran.

"Good, but if anything happens to me, get up here as fast as possible."

"I'll do so, Captain!"

"That's why you're the first mate Tanner. You're loyal to the very end."

With no more words left to exchange, Tanner and the other members marched into the cabin. Mason sat down in a corner to self-talk again. Savannah laid down in one of the hammocks and fell asleep. Tanner sat in a chair, highly alert of the noises above him. All of a sudden, the roar of thunder and the crackle of lightning filled the air, jolting Mason and Savannah back into the real world. Tanner can only imagine the deluge that was pummeling the captain above. He felt the urge to climb back up to the deck and help the captain. But, sticking to the orders given to him, he sat in his hammock and waited.

It seemed like years, before the rain seemed to stop and Tanner was relieved to be free of that stressful noise. But there was no signal from the captain. Tanner was really worried for the captain's health, but he stayed in the cabin. But after a few hours, Tanner couldn't take it anymore. He burst out of the cabin hatch and what he saw was horrifying. Captain Kieran lay on the floor, groaning in what appears to be chronic pain. It was as if the Stormy Coast made him ill. Tanner bent down over the captain, eyes wide with concern.

"Kieran," asked Tanner in a panicked voice, "are you alright?"

Kieran tried to speak, but barely got the words out as he started coughing, "I was... navigating through the... Coast... but the rain just... chilled my bones."

"Oh my goodness! We need to find a place to stop and get you better. The Sweet Sweet Island is close by, Kieran. Want us to stop there to get help?"

"I... suppose so."

"Thank you. Now just hang tight. We'll be there in no time."
