Layla and Igneel grew up together as children and were the best of friends but eventaually they became much more. Their feelings were strong but they knew that they were both going against the laws so they slowly broke away and lost all contact.

Afterwards Layla was arranged to marry a man named Jude Heartfilia and they later had a child, Lucy. Layla, who still held feelings for her dragon, would tell stories of Princesses who instead of falling for the prince, would fall for that dragon istead to her young child.

Igneel, still bitter over his past and hearing of Layla's marrige, became distant. Many dragons tried to convince him to but he had no intention of speaking ever again. That is until he found a small boy with strange pink hair wondering round the forest while he was looking for berries. His bitterness seemed to melt away and he decided to raise the boy and tell him stories of adventures and princesses.

As the children grow up in different worlds, Lucy's being a life she so desperatly wants to leave, and Natsu's being the life he so desperately wishes to keep, they never learn of their pearents' pasts.

That is until the small boy finds his father stood just a mile away from the Heartfilia estate. Tears roll down his scaled cheeks as he watches a ceremony commence. He was in his human form, one he hadn't taken since he lost contact with his dear Layla. That was when Natsu sees a small girl with golden hair among the many people dressed in black.

She noticed him too as he sat with his morning father.
