CHAPTER 1: The Waiting Room
(TRIGGERS: Suicide mentions, depression, grief... anyways. Go ahead)
Drops of water fell from the sky and landed right on her brown hair. The smell of the fresh dirt invaded her nostrils. It was highly inconvenient for the heavens to suddenly bust open their flood gates given that she didn't have an umbrella on her and her car was still in the workshop getting its monthly maintenance. She sighed heavily as she knew that she didn't have a choice but to walk an awful 20-minute walk to her apartment.
Amar walked into the now heavy rain feeling the cold liquid sink into her clothing and touching her bare skin.
She could have just called her dad though. He would've picked her up in a heartbeat. After all she was his beloved only child but she would rather stay away from that house, especially Betty, his recent wife and that would have forced her to put a fake smile as to appease her father.
Dismissing the thought of that woman from her mind she picked her pace and held her bag tightly hoping that no water would find it's way inside and destroy her phone..
She walked past a few restaurants ignoring the weird eyes from onlookers who were probably wondering why she couldn't just have waited for the heavens to calm down but she didn't care. She didn't know those people so she cussed at them in her heart. Her phone begun to vibrate inside her bag. Who the fuck is it this time and what do they want?
Stopping by a liquor store the brunette pulled out her phone. Selena, of course she's looking for her. She had completely forgotten that she left her roommate early in the morning without saying goodbye since she had so much work to do at her part time editing job.
"Amar, how could you? " Selena said in her typical dramatic tone. Amar could picture the caramel skinned girl cussing all over the house the minute she found she was gone
"I'm sorry Selena, I had work to do and had to go for therapy after that and school... I couldn't wake you up either... Forgive me" she said feeling wet droplets from her hair fall on her back.
She could feel the sad sigh at the other side of the Iine.
"I get that work and school keeps your mind off of things but you really need to have some form of social life." Selena said.
Yeah, work makes me escape reality for a second. Stops me from feeling depressed or thinking of mom. She said to herself,.
.
"Amar I'm not saying you're not allowed to be sad don't get me wrong. I know exactly how you're feeling. It was difficult for me too when my dad decided to be a dick and OD on fucking heroine or some shit. We can never forget our loved ones but we can only take it one day at a time and find a way to move forward" Selena said.
Amar eyes welled up, Selena made it sound so easy. She blinked out the tears,
"Yeah, you're.. You're right. I'm only 22 and about to graduate, mom would have wanted me to be happy. Um... I'm going to get a bottle of tequila and bring it home" she sniffled.
"You know you can't drink that Amar" Selena warned her. Amar shook her head turning back to see the liquor store still open.
"I'll be fine Selena I'll call you back"
"Amar wa-" she hung up the phone and wiped her tears away. Putting her phone back in her bag she made her way to the liquor store and bought the bottle of liquor
It's been a while since she had alcohol, and thanks to her therapist,, she didn't think she needed much. But today she needed it, just for some form of peace. Maybe help numb the feeling of it being one year since her mom passed.
The bottle was three-quarters finished as the drenched girl wobbled her way to her apartment. But these buildings don't look familiar; maybe I'm the wrong neighborhood. .Oh, the mechanics... I have to get my car.
She made her way to the garage, not questioning how she got there to begin with. She talked to Tom, her mechanic, an older man who looked worried about her condition.
Yanking the keys from him after an argument, she went in her red car and drove off finishing the last drops of alcohol.
"What's wrong with me driving my car, it's mine" she spoke out loud as she pressed the accelerator.
Just as she made a quick right turn she saw a bright light which forced her to close her eyes.
"What the fuck did you do to yourself?" she heard a nonchalant voice say. She opened her eyes and found herself in an unfamiliar place. It's dark, and eerie,
"You had so much to live for Amar" she turned her head to the direction of the voice and found an attractive man standing right on the bark of a pitch black tree. Her brown eyes scanned his as he made his way towards her, grabbing a black book .
"Who are you, where the fuck am I?" she said.
She realized that she was completely dry. Where was her car, did this man kidnap her or something. Her memory was fussy as she tried to remember what happened.
"I can't really say where you are, I saw no reason to name this creepy forest or void... Whatever it is. Just get up and I'll take you were you'll be going. I don't really do the legal aspect of things" The man said his eyes looking into hers.
"What? I don't know what's going on but I have to go home." She said in confusion as she got up.
"You can't do that Amar," the man said. Her heartbeat increased as she heard him call her name, how did he know her name.
"How do you know my-"
"It would be funny if Death just guided souls to the afterlife and not know their names" he said.
Her soul trusted him, but she didn't understand what exactly she was trusting. The fact that he just called himself Death?
"I'm sorry what? Death?" she repeated the question.
.
"Yes, if you haven't figured it you're dead." he said matter of fact..
Her heart plummeted to the ground. She's dead? She was fine a minute ago, well she was alive a minute ago how did this happen.
"And don't cuss me out, you committed stupid suicide." he said disappointed and bothered that she would lose her life to such petty reasons.
"I don't understand why mortals spend their entire time weeping over people who have already made their way into the afterlife." he said running his hands through his long hair.
Amar blinked twice uncertain on what to say or what to feel. She took a long look at the man.
"I don't remember much, I was on my way home and I was fine and then now... I'm here and you're claiming that I'm dead..." She muttered shaking her head.
"It's not a claim; it's what has happened. Now, we have to go now... I have already wasted time here. I have a lot of people I have to get" the man said. "Amar, your life has ended. Like I have mentioned I'm Death. The real element of Death, not some god or angel." he said answering the questions that were flooding her mind.
If she had seen or heard anything about death, the image of it would have been a creepy skeleton wearing a black hood and holding a giant scythe like how it's depicted in tv or just some dark ominous energy, never did she think he would be this...handsome... That's the word she was looking for. He was dressed in an elegant black suit and had black gloves on, his eyes showed no emotion, maybe disappointed she sensed.
"You don't look like it" she said in a low tone.
"I decided to give myself this look, mortals tend to pay more attention to a being that looks more like them." he said turning away from her.
"Enough talk, let's go" He said. She headed towards him, finally understanding that she really was dead and this wasn't a dream nor an illusion.
She followed him towards a pitch black smoke and closed her eyes preventing the smoke from getting in her eyes. When she opened them she found herself on a white tile path and what seemed to be clouds surrounding the area. Was she in heaven?
"And no, you're not in heaven we are going... there" she heard Death say and looked at the direction he was pointing.
At the far end of the path was a beautiful small bar structure that had a sign above it glowing in neon red,
The Waiting Room.
Okay, Death was right this wasn't really heaven, she couldn't have imagined heaven having a bar. Not that she believed in anything but logically it wouldn't make sense.
"Come along now we have to go"
Amar walked along side Death, unsure of what to expect. This is probably like limbo right? She said to herself. Death opened the door to the establishment. There was way more room on the inside than how it looked from the outside.
Her eyes wondered around the bar finding people drinking some wine, while a few danced on the open stage.
The music stopped as soon as everyone laid eyes on Death. The fun atmosphere ceased every one eyeing him.
"Don't worry it's typical for mortals to not like me, just ignore it and had over to that place"
The atmosphere quickly shifted from the cool welcoming tone to a more grim atmosphere.
Amar followed Death as they walked past the tables and towards the counter. Over there a woman was serving some whisky to a middle aged man dressed up as a soldier.
"You had a lot of fun Rick. At least you died doing something you love" she said to the man and he nodded. She quickly ran back to her white desktop and typed in something that Amar couldn't tell.
"So Rick you were a Christian before you died, and it says here you can either wait or proceed to heaven and sort you papers out for judgement day" the caramel skinned girl said her white hair had an angelic glow to it.
"I would rather wait here a bit longer, you're a good listener" Rick said. Amar wouldn't have imagined that they had a choice.
"Alright then Rick.... Oh... Death... That's why the music stopped... Lovely seeing you here. Can i offer you a drink?" she said after her eyes finally landed on Death.
"No, thank you Halo I'm just passing by" Death said. Halo's eyes then landed on the brunet who was taking a hard time taking it all in.
" Oh my God, what in the heavens did you do to yourself child. Let me just check out your file" Halo said with a sweet tone showing sympathy.
"She killed herself. Just get on with it" Death said. Suddenly Amar remembered what happened. I didn't kill myself I got drunk and I think I had an accident. Halo typed something that the brunette assumed to be her name. The woman's facial expression changed as if she didn't find what she was looking for.
"Something went wrong please try again" Halo read aloud... And looked up at Amar ... "You're not supposed to be here."
Death stepped closer, confused.
"What do you mean she's not supposed to be here, she's dead"
"Nope. There was a mistake she needs to go back" Halo dismissed him.
Death, quickly opened his black leathered book. He sighed heavily and looked at Amar.
"Your name is gone. I don't understand why this has happened, but she's right. You have to go back" he said closing his book.
Amar looked at both celestial beings in a state of confusion,
"Goodbye Amar this place will always be here for you." Halo said sweetly. Death quickly grabbed her hand and pulled her away from the bar.
"Wait... You don't have to pull me like that. Stop" she said angrily.
"It appears that you have a second chance mortal. Don't be stupid. I don't want to comeback and get you any time sooner. Spend all the days of your life doing what you love." he said seriously as a dark ashy mist covered the area. The bar was gone from her sight.
Before Amar could answer the being, he disappeared within the smoke.
