Thirty Eight

Exactly two months after Sarah's check-up...

3rd Person's POV

Two months have passed and people around Sarah have expected her to get well soon and for her body to gain back her lost energy.

But little do they know that whenever Sarah is alone in her room, her nausea always gets the best of her.

Days went by and her body began to get worse. Sarah will be often seen vomitting and clumps of hair have fallen out of her scalp.

Her mother would often come to her aid and her father has been constantly arguing with the doctors to find ways to cure their daughter.

Every time Sarah had the strength, she will always be seen writing on her colored stationeries or busy cutting out some old photos. Oftentimes, she is also filming in front of her cellphone without her parents' knowing.

For her, her days are numbered and she cannot come to tell them one by one how much she loves and appreciate them.

This is the best that she can do.

Day came and Sarah found herself face to face with a woman and a six-year old little girl.

The woman appeared to be familiar to her and its as if she has known her all her life.

The woman has blonde hair and auburn eyes which seemed to mirror the child that she has beside her. Both their right dimples are visible when they smirk or give lopsided smiles.

"Who is she, Mom?" The young girl asked as she shifted her gaze from her and her mother. She is holding her Spongebob stuff toy.

"Nadia, she is Tita Sarah. S-she is your mom's best friend." The woman said, her voice breaking as she speaks.

"You are my momma's bestie?" Nadia, the girl, asked, her eyes twinkling in delight at what she has learned.

"Ah, y-yes." Sarah nodded still skeptical as she stared at them. The girl is now sitting on her bed and playing with her hair.

"How come your hair is so thin?" Nadia asked as she ran her tiny fingers on Sarah's hair.

"Nadia!" The woman warned her daughter. "Go and play with Spongebob. I will just talk to Tita Sarah."

"Mom!" Nadia protested but realized her mom is serious so she jumped from the bed and into the small couch inside Sarah's bedroom.

"I-I'm sorry about my daughter. She can be pretty tactless like me." The woman said in a nervous chuckle.

She met Sarah's eyes and tears sprung quickly down her cheeks. She couldn't help but to hold her best friend's arms who have became thin as time went by.

"Anong nangyari sa'yo, Sarah?" The woman asked crying.

"Nakikilala kita. Hin-" Sarah began to speak and searched her eyes trying to recall the woman's name who is crying in front of her. "- Hindi ko lang malaman k-kung bakit hindi ko maalala ang pangalan mo."

Sarah let out a chuckle and quickly wiped the tear with the back of her hand, "ang sabi ng Doctor ko, kasama na daw sa sakit ko ang pagiging makakalimutin. P-pasensya. Hayaan mo. Matatandaan ko naman ang pangalan mo kung hindi ngayon, baka sa susunod na araw o baka bukas."

With those words, the woman wept even more. Little Nadia dropped her Spongebob toy on the couch and ran to her mother.

"Momma, why are you crying? Did she hurt you?" Nadia asked, her forehead creased with confusion.

The woman shook her head and gave Nadia a tight smile and said, "no, anak. Go and play first. Me and Tita Sarah are just talking."

"O-kay." Nadia said slowly and left the two women alone again to where the couch is.

"Y-your daughter is a sweet child. She looks just like you." Sarah commented as she noticed the similarities between the two.

"T-thank you. Kumain ka na ba? I brought some fruits." The woman said and Sarah's eyes rested on the bright oranges inside the fruit basket. She stood up and went to pull out the oranges from it.
"Here. Alam ko, paborito mo eto kaya dinamihan ko ng bili."

The woman began opening the orange and pulled out a piece and handed it to her. Sarah smiled and brought it to her mouth.

"They are sweet. Salamat." Sarah said in her soft voice.

"I'm sorry." The woman said which made Sarah look at her. "Hindi dapat ako nagpadala sa tukso. Mali na noong una pa lang. Sadyang malandi lang siguro ako." She managed to let out a nervous cackle and continued, "I am so sorry for what had happened between us. Sinira ko ang pagkakaibigan natin. Sinira ko ang tiwala mo. Al-alam kong hindi ko na maibabalik pa ang nakaraan at m-aiintindihan ko kung hindi mo ako mapapatawad pa."

Sarah unconsciously touched her arm which made the woman burst into tears. The woman is weeping and her shoulders are shaking. She could feel the remorse coming from her.

"H-hindi ko maalala kung ano ang nagawa mo para humingi ng pagpapatawad sa akin. Maaaring may mga pagkakamali ka at alam kong pinagsisisihan mo ang mga ito. Sino ba ako para hindi ka patawarin? Hindi ako Diyos pero handa akong makinig." Sarah said heavily. She doesn't know why she felt so disappointed and so down to see this woman weeping so heavily in front of her.

Sarah enveloped her into an embrace. The woman embraced her back and at that moment, she knew that she has known this person for so long.

When they both pulled back from the embrace, Nadia asked to go home and the woman has to bid her goodbye.

"Goodbye and take care always, Nath." Those were Sarah's words as the woman stepped out her bedroom.
