Chapter 5
The group arrived at the dark, empty park. The silhouettes of clouds covered the moon and left only the outdoor lamps to light up the area. They parked on the side of the road and got out of the car. All, except Ellie, who stood sitting.
" Coming out?" John asked as he went out the door.
" No way. I don't feel comfortable going out at night." Ellie shivered, holding herself.
When everybody left the car, Klaus looked back at her and gave her a serious tone." Elizabeth. Do not embarrass me in front of my friends. You are to leave this car, and have dinner with us."
" The fuck? No. I'm not going. I told you, I don't feel comfortable going out at night, in an empty park!" She frowned.
" Ellie. Come on. They're waiting." He looked her with sharp eyes, that told her to leave the car.
" No." She told him firmly.
Klaus sighed and shook his head." Fine. Eat in the car, then." He took her food out of the paper bag and tossed it next to her, along with a fork.
He slammed the door and joined the group that looked back at the car in confusion. Lying, He told them that it was nothing and that she wasn't feeling good.
Ellie looked at the group as they left, deeper into the park. She sat in the dimly lit car, as she looked down at her lap. She sighed and rested her forehead on her hands.
" Shit..." She breathed, realizing that now she was completely alone.
She looked around, as the trees rustled and the wind howled loudly past the trunks. She closed her eyes and breathed in and out deeply. She looked all around the car and saw no one around. She shook her leg with anxiety, nervous about being alone.
* KNOCK*
*KNOCK*
* KNOCK*
" WHAT THE FUCK!!?" Ellie whipped her head towards the door next to her and gasped as someone stood there.
" Ellie? It's me, Paul." He knelt down and peeked through the window. Ellie sighed and shut her eyes as she leaned towards the door to open it. Paul sat down next to her with his food radiating heat as he held it.
" You okay? You look like you've just seen a ghost." He told her, as he noticed how white her face went.
" I'm good. It's just that, it's kinda scary being in the dark, alone, in a park, at night." Ellie told him, looking away.
" Really? Klaus told us that you didn't feel well." Paul frowned.
" Is that what he told you?" Ellie rolled her eyes and shook her head.
" Is..." Paul stopped for a second." Is your relationship ok?"
" Of course." Ellie paused for a second to think." Yeah. Yes, we're doing fine. It's that Klaus, sometimes, overreacts." Ellie told him.
" Oh..." Paul said quietly, noticing her small pause.
" But it's nothing serious. Nothing physical or anything like that." She assured him.
" I hope not. Or else he'll be getting some of this from me." Paul told her holding his fist up. Ellie grabbed his fist and giggled as she leaned back.
" You're funny." She told him as her laughter died down.
" I'm serious." He smiled. Paul relaxed his hand and intertwined his fingers with hers.
Ellie looked down and slowly pulled her hand away." No."
" What? We're only holding hands." Paul told her.
" Paul. It doesn't matter. I told you that Klaus overreacts. If he sees us together, he might get suspicious." Ellie told him.
" There's nothing to be suspicious about! Plus, I don't care about what Klaus thinks." Paul told her, grabbing on to her hand again.
" Well, unlike you, I do care." She frowned, yanking her hand away.
" The only person I care about, is you, Ellie," Paul told her.
Ellie closed her eyes and sighed. Her eyebrows scrunched up and her lips went to a frown, as she struggled to open the car door. Finally, after getting the door open, she walked out and stopped a few feet away from the car. The girl's shoulders hung as she looked down at her feet.
She heard leaves crunching behind her, and turned around to see Paul behind her. Ellie looked at him with a sad and weary look on her face. Her lips pouted as Paul pulled her into his arms. She began to cry as she hid her face in his shoulder.
" I'm sorry..." Paul told her quietly.
" I didn't mean to upset you and open that wound."
Ellie couldn't reply to his apology. With her nose running like a faucet, and tears falling like a waterfall, Ellie manages to say in a gasping voice,
" I love you..."
" Woah..." Said a voice from far away.
Paul and Ellie pushed away from each other and looked at John, who stood there with his eyebrows risen.
" I see that I've walked up on you two."
" No-no-no-no-no-no... It's not what it looks like." Ellie walked up to him wiping her eyes.
" Really?? Ellie, I may be blind, but I could still see that you and Paul still have feelings for each other." John crossed his arms and frowned at her. He was upset that she would go and try to hook up with Paul again, while she being with Klaus.
" That's not what was going on. We were just talking!" Paul told him.
John wasn't convinced. He rolled his eyes and shook his head.
" Even if you try to tell me every bullshit excuse you've got, it still won't convince me to keep my mouth close," John said, turning around to walk back to the group.
" Please... I've never done anything to you!" Ellie cried.
John turned around and pointed s finger at her." Yes, you have. You may not know what, but I do."
" Oh please, John. Whatever I did, I'm sorry." She walked up to him and held his hand with both her hands.
" What's going on here?" Klaus came from behind John and looked at everyone with furrowed brows.
John pulled his hand away, looking at them, then towards Klaus.
" I just heard them talking, and I got curious." John lied. He could see the relief on her face as he said that.
" Talking? 'Bout what?" Klaus crossed his arms and looked towards Ellie.
" I couldn't hear what they were saying. I was too far!" John told him.
Klaus gave Ellie and Paul a long stare before reaching to grab her hand. He pulled her beside him and began to walk to where the group settled. After the commotion, Ellie could feel Klaus hold her hand tighter than before.
