CHAPTER TWENTY-5IVE
Ikay's
I was sitting in their well furnished office, living a deja'vu life. The life I ran away from, was plastered on my face by Eghe's family.
Sitting in an office doing paper work was never my thing. I loved being on my toes, working. My life right now was in shambles and Mrs Luckett was at the centre of it.
Mrs Sarah Luckett made my life a living hell. She never forget to remind me how I was an opportunist, she didn't say it to my face directly but her words always implied it. Me opportunist. She always reminded me how i came from the slums, how she blames her daughter for bringing me into their family.
I loved how ignorant the Luckett family were about me. When they had asked about my family during the wedding, I told them my family where in Abuja and couldn't make it, to keep them in their ignorance I showed them a picture of mum and Shirley visiting the IDPs(internally displaced people ) camp. In a costume. They had dressed as the idp's cos that was the theme of that year outreach. I thought that was the best picture to keep them in their ignorance. I chuckled to myself.
Mrs Luckett was becoming a torn in my flesh and I couldn't wait for Eghe to have our babies so we would be out of that dungeon they call mansion.
I had informed my mother about Eghe's pregnancy, she was ecastic about the whole thing and wanted to travel down and come see the lady who was carrying her grand babies. Mother has been the one telling me to stay put, she hated the fact I had to disguise.
"Since, its what you choose, bear the consequences" my mother would say.
Mother even asked for their family name, I refused to give her that info, I knew she would searched them out, I found out my father sold all Luckett's lands to them. So there was no way momma wouldn't find out.
My phone ringing stopped me on my thinking track, I picked it up from the office table and checked for the caller, it was Mrs Luckett. I exhaled. What is it again?.
I thought about not picking the calls as I have done in the past, but then I thought about Eghe, what if its about Eghe?
I noticed she was a mommy and daddy's girl, she did virtually everything her parents asked of her.
I loved her. I would talk to her when our babies arrive, we need to leave that house. I was not happy there. I could see in her eyes she was reluctant about leaving, she wasn't good at hiding her feelings, but she needs to put my feeling into consideration if she truly loves me like she once claimed.
The phone kept ringing distracting my new thought, I picked it up and kept quiet as always and allowed Eghe's mom to talk. As always too, she went straight to her reasons without any formalities.
"Your wife want you now" I almost hissed but stopped myself. Her tones where always commanding. That's where Eghe got hers from.
"I guess she is about to go into labor" I sat up straight "I will be taking her to lily hospital, come meet us there" and the phone went dead.
I stood up from the office swivel chair, already unsettled by the news. I was about to be a father.
Hurrying out the door, the guy receptionist they gave me was starring at me, I knew he was being curious.
Even if my mother has been the one encouraging me about been patient with Eghe and Luckett family, I knew I had to be there for her, she was my wife now and I still loved her, loved her that it hurts to see her treat me inappropriately, standing by her parents instead of me.
In no time I was in lily hospital. Richard the family driver was getting something from the car when he saw noticed me, he stopped.
"Oga, madam and small madam don enter labor ward, na you dem come dey wait" ( sir, Mrs Luckett Madam and Eghe has gone into the labor ward, they are waiting for you) he relayed in Nigerian pidgin.
"Thank you Richard" I told him and hurried towards the direction he pointed out, he was behind me.
Mrs Luckett was standing outside a door. Putting our grievances aside I took long strides towards her feeling excited and nervous at the same time.
"Where is she"
"In there" she pointed at the door she was facing. Looking at it. The door had Labor room boldly written on it.
I was about going in when her words stopped me. "No need" she starred boldly at my eyes .
"Why" I wanted to know. Has Eghe had our babies already. Even if she had, I still wanna see her..
"You don't have to, if you don't want to" was the words she uttered and I was mad. I tightened my fist and she could see how angry I was with her statement. she stepped away from me. Her action made me realize I needed to compose myself.
"That's MY WIFE about to have my kids" I told her through my teeth "and I want to be HERE".
She made no other words and turned her face.
I went into the ward a little too hard, noise in my wake, in there two doctors and three nurses stood starring at me.
"Can we help you" one of the nurses who quickly regained herself from how I badged in asked.
"Yes" trying to make myself calm from my encounter with Mrs Luckett i answered the nurse "my wife was brought in here, she is about to have a baby"
"Ikay omoruyi" the nurse asked
Nodding my head, she asked me to follow her. I observed my environment, the labor ward was heavily lightened, The nurse handed me a scrub and a safety shoe.
I stopped to change into the scrub and shoe, then followed her into the labor room proper. The soft heartbeats of my babies welcomed me. All nervousness I felt earlier melted away.
Eghe was lying on the labour ward bed, looking beautiful, she was in pains. Tears mark on her temple, I hurriedly went to her and held her hands, when she noticed me she said softly "you came"
"Yes baby, I'm here" I replied wondering why on earth she would have thought I would miss this for anything in the world.
