Chapter 3: Heart Monitor.
Melanie's POV
Mom decided it would be nice to drag me out of my room and go to Allison's because she wanted to talk to us.
mom knocks on her bedroom door. "Just a second." Allison says from inside the room.
"Allison." Mom says.
"Uh, coming. Coming. Okay, uh." Allison says. Mom opens the door reveling Allison on her bed on her laptop.
"Hey." I say to Allie and sit on her bed.
"Hey." Allison says to the both of us.
"What's up?" Mom asks her.
"Uh, nothing. Just doing homework, sending some emails." Allison says.
"Emailing the boyfriend?" Mom asks her.
"No. I'm emailing peta about how my wing nut father gunned down an innocent mountain lion in the school parking lot." Allison replies. I smirk.
"And that wouldn't have anything to do with the fact that you're grounded and you can't see Scott?" Mom asks her.
"I'm not gonna be one of those whining teenagers who looks at her father and says, "I hate you. I wish you were dead." Allison says.
"But -" I say knowing what she is gonna add.
"But - I hate him and I wish he was dead." Allison says. I smirk.
"See, now you're starting to sound like a normal, angry teenager." Mom says.
"What are you working on? Can I help?" I ask Allie.
"Uh, a history project, and I just want to be left alone, actually." I frown at her response.
"Come on. What kind of history project?" Mom says.
"I have to come up with a report that has some relevance to my own family history." Allison says.
"Oh god I forgot about that project." I sigh.
"Specific to your family?" Mom asks us.
"Why? Do you have any ideas?" I ask her.
"Type this in: "La Bete du Gevaudan." Mom says.
"The beast of Gevaudan. What is this?" I ask after Allie typed it into the search bar.
"It's an old French legend that, believe it or not, has something to do with your family." Mom says looking at the both of us.
""In 1766 in a province of Lozere, la Bete killed over a hundred people."" Allison read out loud.
"Mysterious animal attacks, just like a certain town called beacon hills." Mom says.
"So what was it? The animal?" Allison asks.
"Nobody knows for sure, but I can tell you one thing. It definitely wasn't a mountain lion. What's it look like to you guys?" Mom asks.
"It looks like - " Allison stops so I finish for her.
"A wolf." I say. I see mom smile a little.
I'm now in my chemistry class sitting next to Stiles, he's mad at Scott for something, I honestly don't know. I hear Scott start to talk to him.
"Still not talking to me? Okay, can you at least tell me if your dad's okay? It's just a bruise, right? Some soft tissue damage? Nothin' that big - You know I feel really bad about it, right? Okay." Scott says to him then pauses. After a second he continues. "What if I told you that I'm trying to figure this whole thing out, and - That I went to Derek for help?" Scott asks him. Derek? Who's Derek? And what does Scott need to figure out?
"If I was talking to you, I'd say that you're an idiot for trusting him. But obviously I'm not talking to you." Stiles says. But after a minute he turns around and looks at Scott. "What did he say?" He asks Scott. I look at the two boys but just roll my eyes and continue my work. I want to find out of what they're talking about.
"The what of who?" Lydia asks me, as I'm holding the book my mother gave me last night.
"The beast of Gevaudan." Allison says.
"Listen. "A quadruped wolf - like monster, prowling the Auvergne and south Dordogne areas of France during the year 1764 to 1767. La Bete killed over a hundred people, becoming so infamous that the King Louie the 15th sent one of his best hunters to try and kill it." I say explaining.
"Boring." Lydia says. I roll my eyes then continue reading.
""Even the church eventually declared the monster a messenger of Satan."" I say about to continue but Lydia cuts me off.
"Still boring." She says.
""Cryptozoologists believe it may have been a subspecies of hoofed predator, possibly a mesonychid."" I say.
""Slipping into a coma" bored." Lydia says.
""While others believe it was a powerful sorcerer who could shape - shift into a man - eating monster."" I continue.
"Any of this have anything to do with your family?" Lydia asks me.
"This. "It is believed that la Bete was finally trapped and killed by a renown hunter who claimed his wife and four children were the first to fall prey to the creature." His name was Argent." I say.
"Your ancestors killed a big wolf. So what?" Lydia asks obviously still bored.
"Not just a big wolf. Take a look at this picture." Allison says taking the book out of my hand and turning page. She already read the book. She shows me the picture. "What does it look like to you?" She asks us. I freeze looking at the picture. It looks like the same thing that attacked me, Lydia and Jackson in the movie rental place. "Lydia? Mel? Lydia. Mel." Allison ask snapping both Lydia and I out of our thoughts.
"It looks - like a big - wolf. See you in History." Lydia says then hurries off.
I walked around school during free period, bored out of my mind. I'm now in my Economics class, I have it with Allie, Stiles and Scott. I walk in and sit behind Stiles, next to Allison.
"Let's settle down. Let's start with a quick summary of last night's reading." Coach says. A few people raise their hands. "Greenberg, put your hand down. Everybody knows you did the reading. How about, uh -" He looks around then his eyes land on Scott. "McCall." Coach says catching his attention.
"What?" He asks Coach.
"The reading." Coach says to him.
"Last night's reading?" Scott asks. Well it's clear he didn't do it. I sigh.
"How about, uh, the reading of the Gettysburg Address?" Coach asks Scott sarcastically.
"What?" Scott asks confused even more.
"That's sarcasm. You familiar with the term "sarcasm," McCall?" Coach asks him.
Scott looks at Stiles, who smirks, then he looks back at Coach. "Very." Scott replies.
"Did you do the reading or not?" Coach asks him.
"Uh - I think I forgot." Scott says.
"Nice work, McCall. It's not like you're not averaging a "D" in this class. Come on, buddy. You know I can't keep you on the team if you have a "D." How about you summarize, uh, the previous night's reading? No? How about the, uh, the night before that? How about you summarize anything you've ever read - In your entire life?" Coach asks him. I hear a beeping coming from Stiles phone, actually it isn't his phone, who's is it? I see and it has like a heart rate number on it, it's a high number.
"I - I, uh -" Scott stutters.
"No? A blog? How about, uh, how about, uh, the back of a cereal box? No? How about the adults only warning from your favorite website you visit every night? Anything? Thank you, McCall, thank you. Thank you, McCall! Thank you for extinguishing any last flicker of hope I have for your generation. You just blew it for everybody. Thanks. Next practice you can start with suicide runs. Unless that's too much reading. All right. Everybody else, settle down." Coach says. I hear the beeping slowly go down, I look at the phone that's not Stiles' in his hand, the number is going down. I look at Scott and see that my cousin is holding his hand under the desk, trying to calm him down. I look at Scott confused but just continue my work. Now I definitely am figuring out what's going on with those two boys.
Later that night I go home, after school. After a couple of hours in my room, I look out the window and see Allison standing outside, Alone. What did Scott do now?
I am cutting this chapter short because I realized I was going into the Night School episode but here is the Heart Monitor episode. Do you think Melanie will find out what the two boys are hiding? And how they know Derek? Or do you think she'll be left in the dark with no answers? Anyways thanks for reading. Bye.
-Kelly.
