Twenty-three

Wow, I actually want to move schools. Its midnight and I'm sitting in my dark ass room thinking about what my parents would say if I asked. It would obviously be no, considering another school close to us is thirty minutes away.

But seriously, what I wanna know is why the hell there is an Ohio County in Kentucky?

Y/n POV

My eyelids felt heavier than rocks. I wanted so bad to welcome the world of dreams and nightmares, but I was in the middle of an episode of (favorite show). I know I could come back to it tomorrow when I wake up, but I'd rather stay up and finish it. Even though, after I finish this episode, I'll most likely say 'One more', but its obviously not one more. Just like I've been doing all night. The result of continuing this process is getting so close to falling asleep during an episode at two in the morning. At least tomorrow is Saturday.

Just as sleep was successfully taking over, I quickly jump up at the sound of a message notification, suddenly aware of my surroundings. Scanning my room for the source of what interrupted my sleep, a bright light was sitting by my arm in front of me. I fully sit up to prevent me from falling asleep and unlock my phone, after adjusting the brightness level. Of course, it was a message from Ethan.

Ethan
How do you feel about meeting up somewhere?

Rolling my eyes with a tiny smile, I type my reply.

You
Right now? At two in the morning? XD

Ethan
Yeah at two in the morning! What other time would there be?

You
Oh, I don't know, some time when the sun is up?

Ethan
Well thats just boring

So you coming or not?

You
Ethan, its 2am. I can't leave this late at night.

Ethan
So? Sneak out!

A small laugh makes its way out into the air. At first, I was just focused on declining his offer so I can sleep, but then as I thought about it, it sounded fun. My mom will never know, I'll come back before she wakes up. Theres no way of her finding out, unless I accidentally slip up about it.

You
Where at?

A small grin plastered itself on my face as I waited for his answer.

Ethan
How about that ice cream place thats open 24 hours down town?

You
Sure! I'll be there in twenty minutes

Getting up, I begin to dread the thought of a twenty minute walk. I contemplated on curling back in my warm bed and going to sleep, but I already said I'd meet Ethan. Changing into some actual clothes, I grab a hoodie. I did not want to deal with the cold weather, being the second of December. I decided to keep my shoes off until I get outside so I don't risk waking my mom.

Once I'm surrounded by the cold wind of the night, I quietly close the front door and take a seat on the doorstep to put my shoes on. Ethan better have a good reason for this. I'm not going to freeze my ass off, risk getting grounded for lightyears, and miss out on peaceful sleep just because he's bored at two in the damn morning.

The low temperature was definitely waking me up, but it didn't make me feel great. I my hands were numb in my pockets, and my eyes were beginning to water from the cold breeze against my eyes. The sidewalk lining the road still had people walking on it, whether on their way to the county library, the small shops, or the few restaurants that are still open.

A few messages between Ethan and me, and almost tripping over multiple things because of the shitty light on my phone later, I finally make it to the small ice cream place, my eyes immediately landing on Ethan. Despite the freezing cold weather, when I saw the different flavors, I knew I'd be tasting a few.

Ethan's head raised from his phone at the sound of a bell and smiled when he saw me. The two staff members behind the counter were quietly talking amongst themselves, ignoring me as I walked past them and sat at the small, round table in front of Ethan. Ethan and I, along with two girls who looked like sisters, were the only ones here.

"Cold?" Ethan giggles, looking at my shivering form.

I smile at him. "Just a little."

"Maybe some ice cream could help!" He jokes, pushing his cup with half eaten ice cream in it. Without a second thought, I grab the small spoon and take a bite, Ethan attempting to get the spoon back before it touched my mouth, but failing. Ethan laughs, pulling his cup back towards himself.

"You deserved it!" I giggle. "If you put food in front of me, I will take it."

"Ice cream really isn't-" Ethan starts, only to be interrupted by me.

"Shut up, if it's edible, its food!"

"Oh," Ethan silently laughs, shoving the small spoon in his mouth with raised eyebrows.

My cheeks hurt at this point from smiling so much. "Stop it with your dirty thoughts, you muddy man!"

"You have equally of a dirty mind as me, Y/n." Ethan points out, pointing at me with his spoon.

"Yeah, yeah," I lean back in my seat, folding my arms and looking around the place. The walls were covered in bright colors with lamps in the corners with different colored lights. The colors on the lamp didn't really effect the lighting around us, the lights on the ceiling fans were much brighter.

The two girls on the other side of the small shop stood up to leave, but not before kindly saying goodnight to the employees behind the counter. Now it was just Ethan and me sitting in silence. And of course the red headed male and blonde girl with the shirts that have a bright logo on the left shoulder.

"You want anything?" Ethan breaks the silence, biting on the tiny, empty spoon.

I shake my head. "I might later."

"Are you sure? I'll buy it. I did ask you to come out here in the middle in the night, after all."

I smile gratefully. "Really, I'm good. Thank you, though."

Ethan nods and returns to chewing on his spoon. My eyes are glued to the white table between Ethan and me.

"I hope I didn't wake you up." Ethan says, taking the spoon away from his mouth and shoving it in whats left of his ice cream before folding his arms.

"No, I was already awake." I shrug. "Binge watching."

Ethan grins. "What show?"

"(Favorite show)"

"Thats a good one." Ethan nods, smiling widely.

Meeting eyes with him once again, I ask him the question I've been wondering since he messaged me. "Why are you still up?"

He shrugs. "Annoying siblings wouldn't shut up."

"At two in the morning? How much sugar did they have?" I chuckle.

"No," Ethan shakes his head, a small laugh barely audible. "I left at eleven."

I raise a brow. "You've been out since?"

"Yeah,"

My eyes widened. "Your parents must be worried! Its freezing, its late-"

"It's fine," Ethan smiles at me amusedly. "I told them I'd be home pretty damn late."

"And they were fine with it?" I raise a brow.

He shrugs. "Took a lot of  convincing."

I stare at him, unconvinced. "Okay,"

"Oh!" Ethan smiles brightly, sitting up straight and setting his hands on the table. "Every Saturday all my friends come over to mine and we play video games until we're all screaming at each other and my mom yells at us." He states, excitement lacing his voice.

"Okay," I nod slowly, not getting why he told me this.

"And you're one of my friends." He adds slowly, looking at me as if I'm missing something he's throwing at me.

"Okay," I say, slower this time.

"And all my friends go." He stares at me expectingly, eyebrows raised.

I give up trying to think about it. Looking at him with confusion and slight frustration, I speak quickly. "Ethan, if you're trying to tell me something, just tell me!"

Ethan leans back in his chair, lightly slapping the table. "I'm telling you, you should come!"

I mentally face palm. "Oh!" I laugh, Ethan quickly joining. "But I'll be tired!" I whine.

"So? It'll be fun, trust me!"

I think about it, sending him a flat look while he returns a hopeful one. "Fine," I roll my eyes. "But only if you buy me ice cream!" I add, pointing at him.

He grins happily. "Already said I would! What flavor?" He asks, beginning to stand up.

I smile innocently up at him. "(Ice cream flavor),"

He chuckles. "Got it."

***

"Wait," I giggle, staring at the sidewalk in front of me as I walk, pointing somewhere in front of me with the small spoon. "What in your right mind told you to slap someone then say it was an accident?"

"I don't know!" Ethan laughs. "I was in fifth grade, who knew what was going through my mind then."

The two of us were walking down the sidewalk of the town, passing few people and a lot of closed shops. Though it was freezing out, I was still eating ice cream as we walked. Ethan had his hands shoved in his jean pockets with a beanie sitting on top of his head.

"Oh!" I giggle even more. "One time when I was in sixth grade, a teacher asked us if we knew what orally meant. I turned to my friends and whispered "Oral sex!" And the teacher heard it. She just looked at me and said not to say things like that then went back to teaching about drugs or some shit. My friends and I could not stop laughing for our life."
(Actual thing that happened to me a few days ago...She can't blame me, I'm a teenager. Of course I'll say things like that XD)

Ethan and I burst into fits of laughter. We switched stories about each other from when we were kids and laughed at our dumb child selves. Its three in the morning now and every bit of tiredness I had before had completely left me. I was happy I decided to come out tonight.
(Said not a single gay person ever...okay, probably a few...)

Passing a trash can, I decided I was cold enough. Taking a step towards it, Ethan stopped me, immediately taking the cup with the half melted ice cream out of my numb hands. I look at him strangely as he takes the last few bites then throws it away.

"What?" Ethan giggles. "You can't just throw ice cream away like that."

"Whatever," I playfully roll my eyes, shoving my hands in my pockets in hopes to feel them again. "I think that was just an excuse to eat it."

"Fine," Ethan grins. "You're right."

We both quietly laugh to ourselves. We walk in silence for a few minutes before Ethan pulls a key ring full of keys and keychains clinking together as he stops and points it at a car parked a few feet in front of us. The lights turned on for a second before turning back off again. Ethan looked at me.

"You wanna sit in the car? Its actually warm in there." He offers.

I nod, enjoying the thought of heat. "Sounds good to me."

Ethan takes a seat in the drivers seat and I sit in the passenger seat. He starts the car, but doesn't go anywhere. We had nowhere to go. We simply sat in the parked car sitting on the side of the road while the hot air slowly engulfed us. Ethan turns around and grabs something from the back seat. Suddenly, my vision is black as something covered my face. Ethan laughed as I pulled it off my head, a smile growing the second I see the happy expression on his face.

"Theres a blanket if you want one." Ethan smiles, wrapping another one around his own shoulders. "My mom makes me keep a few in the car in case it breaks down and I'm stuck in the cold for a while. I doubt it will ever happen, but at least I'm using them right now."

I smile, wrapping my hands around the blanket. "She sounds like a good mother."

"She is, but shes a pain in the ass."

"Aren't all parents?" I quietly groan, leaning my head on the headrest. One leg was bent in the seat in front of me as I sat sideways in the seat to face him. He was in the same position, except leaning on the door.

"You're right once again." Ethan grins.

"You're lucky to have parents that are happily together. You don't see much of that anymore." I say, smiling softly to myself while staring at my foot, mindlessly playing with the laces.

"Your parents are divorced?" He asks, raising a bow.

I nod. "Just recently, actually. They fought all the time, scared me half to death as a kid. I just hid in my room and hoped it would end soon. When they did get along, though, it was all fun. We would stay up all night watching movies, go out and do a bunch of fun things."

Ethan didn't reply. I could feel his eyes on me, not completely sure how to reply.

"I guess two houses are better than one at times." I smile, lifting my head to look at him.

"Thats a way to look at it, I guess." Ethan pulls his eyes away from mine, staring at the gearshift.

After a few moments of silence, Ethan spoke timidly. "I'm sorry."

I looked up at him again. "For what?"

He looks into my eyes with the little light we had from the streetlight. "That you had to go through that."

"That's nothing to apologize for." I shake my head. "I had it good, compared to others."

"Still," Ethan mumbles. "I would have no idea what to do if my parents divorced."

The two of us talked for a while longer before conversation began to slow down. Replies became shorter and pauses extended. My eyes were closed and it was difficult to open them. Ethan spoke quietly but I couldn't hear him. Without knowing what he said, the only thing I answered with was a short hum. Soon, I didn't reply with anything and let myself fall into sleep.

Ethan's POV

"You're a unicorn?" I ask quietly, an amused grin covering my face.

Y/n hummed in reply.

"Oh," I nod. "You're a chicken."

She hummed again.

I stare at her, the smile I had never faltering. I sit forward in my seat, staring out at the dark road. A car would pass every now and then, the lights blinding me. Noticing the gas was running low, I take my keys out of the ignition. I'll wake Y/n up later to take her home. I'll just let her sleep for a little longer.

Time was passing quicker than I expected. Every time I opened my eyes it was a few minutes ahead of what it had showed last time. My eyelids were falling every few minutes, and as time passed it was getting harder to keep them open. I tried my hardest to stay awake, but before I knew it, I was asleep next to Y/n.

Wow! Finally a long chapter! It more than likely has a fuck ton of typos but, OH FUCKIN WELL! All the other ones have a shit ton, whats the difference? XD

Also, if you live somewhere where it doesn't get cold, you can change it to where it makes sense. A lot of this will take place in winter.
