Chapter 9: Nagatenjouki Academy

[Mynnah's POV]

The sun shone through my window and blinding sunlight hit me right in the face. I sighed, the first ray of sunlight, the sign of a new day to be spent—no, wasted with those idiots from my class.

At least I don't have to see his face again, not after the switch incident. I'd rather not remember how much of a depressing mess that guy is; makes me wonder how he's the number one esper in all of Academy city, or how he's still standing, even.

I ate, took a bath, brushed my teeth, put on my uniform, fed my brother's dog, and left some food and a note for my brother on the table. I conjured a bunch of crystals and concealed them under my gloves...and so the routine starts.

I entered Nagatenjouki Academy under the name Mynnah Reikozawa, since I can't let anyone track me down with my surname, if I did, Kiyan might as well be dead. I made my right hand man, Suzuka, pose as my elder sister and register me (with falsified papers), a year ago. It would've been much easier to just continue on with homeschooling, but I needed to be registered to a school and have top grades to be able to apply for that partnership with Yoshikawa.

I slid open the door to my class; the star class of my year level, 2-A-1, gaining the attention of a few other students. I didn't pay any attention to them, I just sat down. All of the bastards here other than my cousin look down on me, just because I told them that I was a level zero and they're all level fours.

I thought I saw a familiar bundle of moppy white hair in the seat next to mine, but my dickhead classmate, Daichi Isogai, approached me before I could get a better look. He was a very annoying idiot that constantly picks on me every single day, just because I'm a 'level zero'.

"Hey, lookie what we have here, a level zero. You sure you're in the right class, zero?" Here he goes again. It's the same insult again today. He should just jump off a cliff. That bastard was lucky that I couldn't kill him and I couldn't punch him either, because I have to be a 'proper student' so I don't get expelled or worse, discovered.

That could all go to hell for all I cared, but my chances of finding Akahiko and Kiyan's safety would be at risk if I did. If I just didn't have to do those kinds of stuff, he'd be dead by now.

Our adviser, Akane Komoe entered and Daichi clicked his tongue before reluctantly going back to his seat. We bowed and greeted Miss Komoe before sitting down.

Miss Komoe put her stepping stool in front of her desk, standing on top of it for her to be able to put her hands on the desk. It's been a few weeks since the school year started, yet I still wonder why our adviser looks like a kid from daycare. Miss Komoe is quite...small, she's about four and three fourths feet tall at the most, but still taller than her older sister, or so I hear.

"Okay class, today we will have a new student." Miss Komoe said. Wonder who the new guy is. "He is a powerful level five and a very talented student."

'Wait, don't tell me...damn it, I hope it isn't who I think it is.' I thought to myself, wanting to scream bloody murder and repeatedly slam my head on my desk.

Then it crossed my mind, the familiar bundle of moppy white hair from earlier. I looked to my left and surely enough, there he was, in all his annoying glory, Accelerator. Please let me be hallucinating, please, please, let me be hallucinating...

"Please welcome the strongest esper in all of academy city, Accelerator!" Ms. Komoe announced, and I screamed internally as he stood up from his chair and walked to the front of the class. "Isn't it great? Now we have two level fives in our class!"

Accelerator didn't bother to introduce himself and sat down in the seat at the back of the class.

He just had to pick the seat right next to mine. Great, just great.

And just for the record, whatever seat you pick on the first day is your permanent seat for the rest of the school year.

"Um, Accelerator, aren't you going to introduce yourself?" Miss Komoe said.

"Tch. You just told them everything they needed to know." Accelerator said.

"Well then, class, Accelerator here, is, as you all know, a level five esper. He is seventeen years old and he used to have a special curriculum here in Nagatenjouki, but unfortunately, it was cancelled. So now, he is your classmate." Miss Tsukiyomi said, sweatdropping. Accelerator clicked his tongue, resting his cheek on his fist. He then looked over at me.

"Oi, you." He said to me. "You're the girl working for Yoshikawa, Misa, aren't you?" I could've sworn that a vein popped out of my forehead. A lot of people get my name wrong from time to time, but this guy...just called me by the name of my brother's dog.

I regained my composure and took a deep breath.
"Yes, I am. And my name is Mynnah. Mein-nah, not Misa." I showed him a fake smile. "Nice to meet you, well, properly."

"Oh, don't bother befriending that level zero, Accelerator." Daichi said in a mock voice. Man, I wanted to stuff him in a sack and throw him in the river so very badly. But...I couldn't risk it, now, could I?

"He's an acquaintance of mine, a friend of my research partner." I explained, trying not to snap.

'Restrain, restrain, just hold back, he's not worth blowing your cover.' I thought, as my smile became more and more forced.

"Nobody asked for your opinion." He spat.

"Nobody asked for yours, either." I retorted, irking him.

"Well, no one cares about you anyway, weakling. You don't belong here, just leave." Okay, maybe I could use my ability, just a teeny bit, just enough to embarrass this bastard. I put my hand in the pocket of my jacket, letting out the crystals I'd conjured earlier.

I released and controlled them one by one to not set off an A.I.M. Diffusion field irregularity detector. Controlling one  of them creates a small diffusion field equal to that of a level one, which isn't enough to set the alarm off, but controling ten of them at once would probably set off all the alarms on the second to the fourth floor. I formed them around one of the legs of Isogai's chair. I focused my control on the one directly underneath the leg, causing a chain reaction with the crystals and flipping the chair over along with him. I immediately made the crystals dissipate afterwards.

"Miss Komoe! Miss Komoe! Accelerator used his esper power on me!" Daichi wailed like a baby.

"That's nonsense, Isogai. If he did, the A.I.M diffusion field alarm would have been set off. You just fell, don't try to blame it on Accelerator." Miss Komoe said.

"But Miss Komoe, he did use it! It just couldn't detect it!"

"Tch. What an idiot. The higher your esper level is, the larger the A.I.M. diffusion field you emit is. If I did use my esper ability, I would've set off every alarm in this damn building." Accelerator said. "Were you too busy having a stick so far up your ass that you didn't even know that?"

The the students around us started to laugh. I admit, he was good. I had to give him some credit, he had some wits and a good retort to boot.

"Geez, Isogai. What are you going to say next, Mynnah used her esper abilities on you?" Miss Komoe said and all the students except for Accelerator, and my cousin, Konari, laughed. I chuckled a bit, they were all so clueless...
