Chapter 6: Damaged
The bright rays of noon sunlight hit Yoshikawa's face, making her eyes flutter open and finally awaken. She clutched her head and felt around. The world around her seemed to be a mere blur of color and her head was throbbing.
She pushed herself up and tried to stand. Her knees buckled and she almost fell back to the ground, but someohow. she managed to stay on her feet. She shook her head, trying to help her vision clear as she looked around.
"What...happened—ugh..." She said, another throb in her head making her clutch it again. "Did I...pass out...?"
"This is still Yomikawa's apartment, good to know..." She said, her vision clearing and her coming to her senses. "The door's open? Wait—Last Order!"
She frantically looked around until she heard the water running and Last Order humming, and she let out a sigh of relief. At least Last Order was okay.
"Nothing seems to be stolen..." She looked around again and rubbed her temple, her heart rate rising and panic forming as she saw the person unconscious on the floor. "Accelerator?! Accelerator, wake up!"
As she was trying to compose herself, she noticed the sparks flying out of his choker style electrode, meaning that it was broken and he no longer had the ability to think properly. Yoshikawa quickly grabbed her phone from her lab coat pocket, calling an ambulance.
The ambulance came, and Accelerator was taken inside and rushed to the emergency room of the hospital which Heaven canceller worked in.
"What happened to him?" Yoshikawa asked Heaven canceller, slumping in the lobby as Heaven Canceller walked up to her.
"I don't know, but it seems that he is, well...in a comatose." He said. "And from the looks of it, he probably won't wake up anytime soon."
"What...? Why...how...?" Yoshikawa spluttered out.
"We found signs of his former injuries reopening, maybe even becoming worse this time. " He sighed. "And it looks like he'd been like that for quite a while. We'll have to conduct a surgery on him later."
"Will he be okay...?" Yoshikawa said, her eyes glimmering with tears.
"He'll be fine, Yoshikawa." Heaven Canceller said. "I'm his doctor, after all."
"Alright..." Yoshikawa sighed, standing up. "I can only hope that everything goes well..."
"Go home for today, Yoshikawa. You must be tired, with all this happening." Heaven Canceller reassured her and she walked out of the hospital, but still she was restless. When she was only two streets away from her home, she took a right turn.
She couldn't help it, her intuiton strongly told her that she needed to find answers; so she ran to the one that could give her answers, one of the most intelligent people she knew: her co-researcher.
She drove further and further away until she was almost on the border of the district, and then once again turned right, entering a quiet neighborhood with fairly wide spaces between the houses, anf finally stopped when she reached a small, modern house.
It was painted black and white, and the door was gray, the potted plants on the quaint gray porch being the only colorful objects of what seemed like such a monochromatic color scheme.
Yoshikawa hopped out of her car and hurriedly walked to the front door, pressing the doorbell and nervously hoping that Mynnah was home.
"Are you expecting someone, Kiyan?" She heard Mynnah's faint voice from the other side of the door and breathed out a sigh of relief.
"No, not at all." Another voice, presumably that of Mynnah's brother, replied. "Xiaolian's too busy to drop by."
"Wonder who it is." Mynnah said, and without Yoshikawa even hearing a single footstep, the door opened, making her jump back in surprise. She was wearing a sleeveless gray top and a pair of black leggings, and was holding a mug of coffee. "Yoshikawa? Something you need? The lab was still locked, so I thought there was nothing to do for today."
"I-It's not about project six, or anything of the sort." Yoshikawa gulped. "I just wanted to ask you something."
"Come in." Mynnah said and Yoshikawa took off her shoes before coming in to the living room. "What did you want to ask?"
"Well, you said before that you worked with a researcher on neurology, right?"
Yoshikawa said, and Mynnah nodded. "I...a friend of mine, something happened to him. He had a severe injury that impaired his calculating abilities, and for some reason, it reopened, and we don't know why..."
"What's your friend's current condition?" Mynnah asked, pulling up a computer chair and grabbing her laptop, that was placed on the couch next to her brother. She plopped down on the chair as she booted up the laptop.
"Comatosed. And his injury worsened." Yoshikawa said and Mynnah took a sip from her coffee cup, patiently looking at the laptop's startup screen.
"Esper power. And his name so I can make sure that his ability doesn't have any aberrations from the rest of his ability group." Mynnah said, taking another sip of her coffee.
"I doubt that, everyone in his ability group has completely different ability effects." Yoshikawa said and Mynnah looked up from her laptop screen and shot her a puzzled look. "His name is Accelerator, he's the boy that was in the lab yesterday, and his ability is Vector Transformation." Mynnah's eyes widened and she choked on her coffee.
"What was—the injury caused to him—before he was comatosed?" Mynnah choked out, coughing.
"He was shot in the head." Yoshikawa said. Mynnah quickly placed her coffee on the coffee table, slamming her laptop shut before shooting up from her chair. She then took a deep breath.
"Fuck!!" Mynnah exclaimed, thrusting the laptop into her brother's hands.
"Wha—" "Take care of it, I need to run!" She interrupted her brother's sentence.
She grabbed her jacket from a nearby chair and then rushed to her room, grabbing a drawstring bag. She ran to the shoe rack, hurriedly putting her shoes on, not bothering to wear any socks.
'Damn Haruna for not taking any fucking precautions.' Mynnah thought, clicking her tongue. 'Of all the abilities, he just had to to have Vector Transformation...what are the odds of landing on someone with a one in a million ability...?"
"Is everything alright?" Yoshikawa asked.
"Where. Is. He. Hospitalized?!" Mynnah said through gritted teeth.
"In the hospital near Tokiwadai on the third floor in room 203. His doctor is the Heaven Canceller." Yoshikawa said.
"Of course he has to be on the other fucking side of the district!" Mynnah yelled out in pure frustration.
"What's wrong?" Yoshikawa asked and Mynnah took a deep breath, grabbing her shoulder.
"Drive me to the hospital, or he's dead in..." Mynnah said frantically then looked at her watch. "...oh boy. Get to the car, now!"
Yoshikawa tensed up and then sprinted to the car, unlocking it. Mynnah hopped into the backseat.
'If that bastard really did try to reflect the Haruna's hack, then right now, his brain would be slowly shutting down from the extreme overexertion of his esper power, and it's almost been eight hours since Haruna's hack...he'll die!'
Mynnah thought, looking at Yoshikawa through the front mirror.
'If I don't save that guy, there is a huge possibility that Yoshikawa will stop the research...If she does, I'll lose all my leads to who nearly killed me...There's no other choice, I have to save that bastard.'
'If I fail, I won't be able to find Akihiko.'
The drive went by smoothly, until they got to the center of the district and ran into traffic.
"What's going on?" Mynnah asked.
"A pair of espers started a fight in the middle of the road." Yoshikawa sighed. "They hit a car and it ended up blocking the road."
"Well that's just dandy!" Mynnah said, suppressing a scream and unbuckling her seatbelt. Yoshikawa looked at the mirror and nervously observed the usually cool, composed, and emotionless Mynmah freaking out in her backseat.
"What's the hurry?" Yoshikawa asked "Accelerator's still got a lot of time, right?"
"No. He's got forty minutes left." Mynnah stated, grabbing her drawstring bag and opening the car door. She got out of the car and immediately broke into a run, leaving a dumbfounded Yoshikawa.
The sun was about to set, meaning that it was nearly evening, and that time was running out for Accelerator. She ran into an alleyway, trying to take a shortcut and bumped into a tall man.
"Well, well, look at what we have here, a little mouse has come to play." The man said as he cracked his knuckles, three men behind him. "Why don't you stay and play with us, darling, we'll take care of you. Oh, and we'll need a little cash "donation" too."
Mynnah turned back, but there were also men behind her. She clicked her tongue at him and looked at her watch.
"I only have twenty five minutes left. For shit's sake, get out of the way." Mynnah stated bluntly. She was on the verge of bursting with anger, she wasn't going to let her only lead to her past slip away, not now, not until she found out who the monster used her like a toy was, where he hid the person most important to her, and why he took away one of the very few people that she cared for.
"That's rude, you know?" One of the men said, cracking his knuckles. "We'll have to teach you some manners."
'I don't have time for this. Maybe if I use my ability maybe I can--no.' Mynnah shook her head, shaking off the thought and glancing at the security camera in the alleyway, gritting her teeth. 'Nevermind. If I use my ability, I'll risk being discovered. Can't kill them, either.'
"What the hell are you thinking about, girlie?" The man said.
"I hope you shits are ready, 'cause now you've made me real mad." Mynnah said, an irked smirk spreading across her face. "I'm gonna enjoy beating the shit out of you."
