The Play
The sun was setting over the city of Provo. A curly haired, 5-foot girl awoke from a nap.
The last day of school had just barely ended, and Annie had come home and gone to sleep. But now she awoke and checked the alarm. 4:30. It was time to go to a play starting at 5.
After finding her parents and reminding them where she was headed, she flung on her backpack and skipped out of the house. After heading outside, she slowed to a walk. The theater was not far ahead.
At the theater, Annie took a seat near the front, between a teenager and a woman.
And then the lights dimmed. As the crowd grew quiet, the show began.
It was a Toy Story crossover. Annie watched the play with rapt attention. Although most of the play recapped the movie, Annie spotted several changes, outtakes, and new scenes.
In Act 7, Annie saw the girl playing Jessie had blue ears! What the heck? Annie thought. Is...this possible?
The rest of the play was kind of a blur. Annie was definitely planning to ask the actress about it afterwards.
Afterwards, Annie went outside and weaved through the crowd. At last she found the blue-eared girl talking to a teen from her school. Isn't that Shelby? Annie thought. She cleared her throat and took a step forward. "Hey! You!"
Shelby and the actress both turned.
"What's your name?" Annie asked.
"Jessie," the actress replied. "Obviously."
Annie grunted. Typical acting. I knew she would say that.
Shelby left. "See you later, Savannah."
So that's her name, Annie thought. "Savannah, why do you have blue ears?"
Savannah shrugged. "I dunno. Why don't you?"
"Because it's weird!...I mean, different." The tiniest look of shame crept across Annie's face.
"You know, sometimes differences can be good," Savannah replied, "if we take the time to get to know each other."
"Yeah...I guess you're right," said Annie, though the girl before her was still eluding.
"Oh, and what's your name?" Savannah asked.
"Annie McRae," Annie replied.
"Pleasure," said Savannah. "First day of summer today, isn't it?"
"Uh...yeah," Annie replied. So?
"They've got something cool planned," said Savannah fruitfully. "I think you'll enjoy it."
Just then, a young woman Annie didn't recognize walked up to them. "Hello, Jesse."
"Bye, Annie," said Savannah.
"But--but what event?" Annie asked.
"Go on, Annie!" said Savannah. "If you're coming, I'll see you there. Bye!"
After saying hi to the actors for Woody and Buzz, Annie left the theater.
