Chapter 8 The Truth

It was a rainy day with dark skies that Anna and Frederick woke up to.  Anna sat up and felt tears in her eyes that matched the raindrops outside. She sighed.  "Freddie, please don't leave me."  She pleaded with him again. She had not seen him sleeping beside him, because he had woken early and returned to his place inside the closet. He felt bad about lying to her, but she wasn't honest. Why hadn't she told him, she was a real princess?

"Anna," he asked in a voice he hoped was not too angry, "Why have you kept this from me?"  "Kept what from you?" She asked. "The truth," he replied.  "Whatever do you mean, I have told you that my mother poisoned you," she stated. "Yes, but you never told me you were the princess from the place we left, why did you withhold this information from me? Didn't you trust me to keep your secret?" He responded. "I am sorry, I only thought you would not look at me the same if you knew," She said. "Many suitors in the past ran away once they found it because they only desired riches and when I would not give it to them they left me," she confessed.

"I see, well, I would not have left," He said. "Can't you see that I love you?" He told her. "I have something to tell you and only hope you can forgive me," He said. "Tell me, what? I know that there is something different about you. I am sure since you told me you were not always a frog," She blurted out. "This could only mean that once you were a boy," She responded.  "I see no need for you to hide it any longer, you are a frog prince," She said.

"Yes, and no, princess," He said. "I once was a frog and have been for years. Thanks to you I am no longer the frog I once was, but I fear you shall not want to be with me any longer,"  He sounded sad as he spoke. "Nonsense that is utter nonsense you hear," She replied. Fredrick stood up and walked to her. He held onto her sure that if he let go perhaps this would all be a dream and he would remain her faithful frog companion.

"Princess Anna," He said. He heard her sobs and felt unsure how to respond. How does he go about comforting her?  Oh, how he wished he would have listened to his father's advice about girls before he was turned into that dreaded amphian. Well, now he was the crowned Prince Fredrick, He would have to figure out how to keep her safe and happy.

"Where have you been?" she asked in an accusatory manner. I was sure I felt your presence behind me, but when I awakened, you were no longer there," she said. "Sorry, I had gone back to the closet because I thought you wanted nothing to do with me further," he said.

Anna spun around in his arms. She gasped when she saw him standing before him. "Who are you?  What you have done with Freddie?" She said.  "Anna, it is me, Prince Fredrick, I am here restored to my true self, and I love you. Will you still have me?" He asked. Anna was shocked. "Fredrick, but that is impossible the prince is long gone. I heard it be told by all those in all the lands that the prince was dead," She responded. "I assure you I am very much alive, and am the Prince Fredrick," He said. Anna reached up and touched his face. She looked at his eyes and realized the familiar look in them.

"F-Freddie it is you," She muttered. "You are here, but you are the long lost Prince Fredrick, and that means," She said. "Yes, it means your kiss has turned me back to myself," He said. "Wow,  and here I was wondering if fairy tales could ever be real,"  Anna stated.  "I am certain they are as much as I sure I love you," He said.  "Love me?" Anna inquired. She looked at him as if he lost it. "N-no, you can't..." She protested. "Why not?  Is it so hard for the frog prince who once was to love the only real princess who befriended him and kissed him?"  He asked. "Tell me, does this mean you haven't any love for me, but only pity?" He asked.

"Fredrick, I -I don't wish you to go,"  Anna said. "I know, and I shall stay, but do you love me?" He asked.  Anna muttered, "Please, don't ..."  The prince leaned in and did what he wanted to do for years. He kissed her lips. He heard her sigh. He pulled away when she did not return his kiss. Is that it?  Could it be true she felt no love for him?  How could he have read it all wrong?  How did she make him human again with no love for him?

"I am sorry, Anna," He responded. He felt like she had rejected him.  "I had to know how it felt to kiss you. I don't understand why you are upset.  Do you regret kissing me as a frog is that it?  Should I go to your mother and confess all?  What shall I do?  Please, tell me, I feel as if my heart is breaking," He said.  "I can't stop loving you. I have loved you the entire time I was a frog, and I can't stop now that I am the prince once more." He confessed.  He released her. It hurt to hold her only to see the look she gave him now. It was the one he feared a look of disapproval.

The prince went and sat on the floor beside the sleeping bag. He wept. He refused to look at her. It hurt too much. Is this how it feels to have the girl you love despise you? He knew he should not have hoped for more. She wanted nothing more than friendship from him.

"Anna, why?  Tell me why?  Why do you hate me?" He sat with his head down. He could not stand to see her disapproving look any longer. The look that spoke volumes. The one that said more than words.

"I don't hate you," she said. "You don't, but I..." he started. Anna sat beside him and wrapped her arms around him. "I was shocked. Last night, you were a frog, and there was the light. You must admit it was a lot to take in all at once," she said. He nodded his head. "I know, but I thought..." he said.

"Shh," She said. She kissed his cheek. He looked at her with uncertainty where they stood now. Now that things had changed so much.  Anna took her arms off of his chest and carrassed his cheek.  "You make me want to kiss you," He whispered. Anna smiled. He frowned. Anna laughed, "You are cute when you are all pouty-faced," she teased him. She kissed the corner of his lips.

She saw his eyes close and heard him mutter, "Don't let this be a dream. Anna, I love you. Do you love me?"  Anna knew she had to do something. She pressed her lips onto his. She felt him slowly kiss her in return. The kiss was great. She heard him sigh, saw his eyes open in shock, and he deepened the kiss. "Anna, what have you done to me?"  "You love me, and well, I love you too, Freddie or Fredrick, or whatever your name is, I love you," She said. "You do?" He asked huskingly. "Y-yes," She whispered.

Fredrick smirked, pulled her close, and kissed her again. This time after she kissed him, he pulled away and saw her smiling at him.  "Anna, my princess, will you..." He started to say. He felt his voice go weak. What was happening?

Suddenly, he passed out. "Fredrick!" Anna screamed his name. She shook him, but he did not respond. How could this have happened?
