Chapter 3: Before the Tragedy
"Anna! Eat dinner and go to bed before your father comes home!" Carla screams.
She called David my dad. My father. But he isn't. I'll never believe it. I'll never accept him. I mean he doesn't even treat me nicely. He calls me abnormal. Whatever. I just call him David. Carla hates it when I'm not in bed before David comes home. Cause David gets pissed. He hates seeing me. I'm his burden.
I bet he wants to throw me out sometimes.
Anyways, I come out of my room into our so called living room. It actually has one couch, one table and a broken chair. Wow. But I still won't complain. At least I have a place to stay in right. It's nice for Carla and David to keep a burden like me in their comfy place.
Now I'm sitting on the ground. I feel like I should respect Carla for everything she does for me. I respect her for taking my side and at least treating me as a daughter. Or at least a fake daughter.
She sits on the couch. I sit beside her on the ground. We don't make small talk. We actually don't talk unless we have a reasonable reason.
Carla made a type of pasta. It was slimy. But super good. Her recipes are far too amazing. The slimy substance was getting on my fingers. But that's fine cause I just licked them clean.
After I finished, I went into the kitchen. The right wall has a slight curve and the left wall is just squared. It's painted a greesy grey. I smell a delicious smell of pasta. I really crave pasta. I take the plate to the sink, wash it, wipe it until it's completely dry, then I put it in the cabinet.
I leave the kitchen and say thank you. I don't even look up into Carla's eyes. Sometimes I feel the pain she has for me. I sometimes feel that she feels bad for me. But at other times I come to reality and figure out that she has the pain that I have created for her filled in her eyes. The shine in her eyes is actually the pain she gets when she looks at me. At least that's what I think it is.
But I can never feel too sure.
I turn around. But she stops me.
"Sweety, is everything okay? Did your father say anything to you?" Carla says with a sympathetic tone.
"It's nothing" I yell.
I feel her taking out a sigh. A sad sigh.
"Well then just prepare for school tomorrow okay?" She says while bringing her tone up, in happy mode. I could practically feel her smiling at me.
I shrug. "Fine".
I walk fast back to my room and shut the door. Hard.
Maybe that was a bit rude of me. I mean the way I was talking. But whatever. She wouldn't mind. She never does anyway.
I shut the door and lay down. There's no reason to shut any sort of light. I have one lamp. It's never on.
I close my eyes and sleep.
"Anna! Hurry! I just charged the portal for you. Come before the light goes away". Carla screams in a rush.
My eyes break open. They were shut too tightly, it kind of scares me. I was having a dream. The type of dreams that make you want to live in them forever. The type of dreams that you to never end. But it was actually like a vision. Maybe even a flashback. I feel like I have seen it before. I feel like I have already been it that moment, felt the happiness, tasted the fun.
I was dreaming of me as a baby. I was in a purple dress. An old man with a long white beard was coming towards me. He was holding a box. A dull purple box. But who? I couldn't really see properly. Everything looked so blury.
"Anna!" Carla screamed. "Hurry up!" Now she was angry.
I could hear David in the back. He was murmuring. Or at least he was trying to. He wanted me to here everything. But just indirectly.
"Just leave her. She's as pathetic as you Carla. Now hurry and pass me my coffee!" He was being rude. I felt really bad for Carla. She was just looking out for me.
I quickly got off of my bed and went to the bathroom in my room. The floor creeks every where in the cottage, especially the bathrooms. It's creepy but I've gotten so used to it, that it is an entertainment in a way.
The worst places in this cottage are the bathrooms. They are filled with finger sized cockroaches, and rat sized spiders. There are also stains of different molds and fungus that Carla tells David to paint over. So it really never gets cleaned
I quickly get ready and come out wearing my uniform. There is an extra shelf in the bathroom that Carla had asked David to make for me. I keep my uniform and stuff like that on it to make my life a bit easier in the morning. After everything that's going on, I don't want to be struggling to find my stuff and especially ask people for help. The people keeping me here.
Carla comes running up. There is a door in my room. She opens it after saying that the light is red. When the light is red, it means that thThee portal has been charged and that it is ready to be used. To charge the portal, Carla sprinkles purple dust on it. She does this when she has to open the door to. The different lights flicker on the very top of the door. When there is no light, it means that it is not charged and when the light is green, it means that someone wants to come in from the portal. But that has never happened before. I run back and grab my bag, then Carla starts spraying holy water and sprinkle the dust. Where does she get this dust from anyway? Whatever.
I here David yelling at Carla.
"Did she leave yet?" He screams.
"She's on her way" Carla says nicely.
"Well good then! She'll be better off with her type" David snapped back.
Carla just rolled her eyes. I can even here David laughing. Actually, I think he is cackling. Creepy.
I step into the portal as soon as the magical portal door appeared. Before Carla could close the door I quickly turn around and say bye. She smiles. Her smile touches my heart sometimes. Or maybe her smile just reminds me of my mom.
I turn around with my back facing her. I noticed she closed the door as soon as I heard the click of the door shutting.
I quickly said the magic lyrics.
Portal, Portal.
Oh Lovely Portal.
Let This Dust.
Take You in My Trust.
The Trust For You to Take Me.
To A Place I Can Be Free.
And Be With People Just Like Me.
I felt the cool rush of wind pushing against me. Wow, how wonderful. How soothing.
After about 30 seconds I heard the clicking sound again. This mean I have reached the alley of this mystical world. It's called "Heimat der Lila". Translated, this mean "Home of Purple". Carla tells me that the name is in German because the founder of this small world was from Germany and he named it. But, we don't make enough small talk for her to tell me tales and stories.
I opened the door and stepped out. I turned around. The door of the portal was gone. In order for me to go back, I have come here right after school. But I don't like to cause I take my time. So I just use the one located in the school. But they do have a time limit--a curfew. A time for all portals to go hidden. Eight O-Clock PM. I don't know what will happen if I stay here passed that time. I guess that for people who live here it's fine because they have homes here. But for me, I have to be careful. Carla says really bad things can happen when the evil comes out in that time. I actually don't believe in any of that stuff.
There is a really big clock that actually reads and says the time out loud itself. If you want to be notified at a certain time you can actually ask it politely and at that time it will yell for you to alert you that it's time. The clock named Harold does this 3 times. After one minute each, then stops and carries on with other alarms or the regular time.
Harold just yelled that it is 8:30 AM. Along with that he says "can all students please make their way to school". Harold also has a face. He observes. He observes everything. Our teachers even say that he's friends with the evil. But again, I don't really believe anyone of this.
As I notice the time, I quickly run to school hoping to make it on time. School is the only part of my day that I look forward to.
Every other part involves pain, loneliness and hatred.
