New Neighbor
Kyoru fruits basket alternate universe
An: my first try at an AU, Don't hate me, I'm just trying to welcome change.
Spring is just setting in, the morning chill not too much of a problem for a early month move. Tohru Honda has just moved into an apartment complex just outside of Kyoto. Her furniture has already arrived and been arranged, so all there is left to do is unpack her boxes of miscellaneous treasures, books, and decor.
Halfway through a box of novels, a knock on the door alerted her attention to the front room. With haste, she walks to the front door opening it with curious brown eyes. "Hello, good morning!" She spoke, smiling sweetly at the orange haired man at her door. He looks somewhat surprised to see her.
"Ah, hey, is Hatsuharu Sohma here by any chance? I'm his cousin, and I just moved back to Kyoto." Tohru stares at him with wide doe eyes. His hair was like her mother's. "I'm sorry, Your cousin seems to have moved. I also just moved to Kyoto too."
With an embarrassed smile, the orange haired man shakes his head. "The dumbass may have moved without letting me know before I came. Inconsiderate ass. Ah, Thank you Miss, I'll actually be moving in to the apartment below." Then with a quick glance at the book hugged to her chest, the red head lightly gasps.
Tohru's smile turns concerned, tilting her head to the side, "Is everything okay sir?" With that, he points at the book with a small smile. "That's my book." Confusion breaks her features quickly, she could have sworn she bought this book the day before her move. "Are you sure? I could have sworn this was the book I ordered from the bookstore at home before I moved."
Shaking his head with a chuckle at her airhead like demeanor, he points to the name on the books cover. "Kyo Sohma. I wrote this novel." The redhead stood patiently as realization hit her. "Really?! I have most of your books, they're so beautiful!" Her eyes suddenly glossed over with excitement.
"I appreciate it, but no they aren't, they're terrible." A blush dusts his cheeks lightly at the compliment, not feeling worthy of her praise. "I mean it, the books truly are wonderful! Mom loved to read them with me all the time! The cat is my favorite character of all of them, because he wanted to be accepted the most."
""The Banquet" wasn't a good book series to begin with, it has too much going on, and the main guy is such an asshole to the girl, he hardly deserves her no matter what he's going through." Tohru looks at her ceiling with a finger on her chin, thinking over his reasoning.
"Sometimes people make mistakes, when they're mad, alone, or afraid. That's why the girl knew that the way to heal him, was to show him her love and appreciation for his good qualities; because everyone makes mistakes." Looking him right in the face, she smiles so brightly to this guy that she just met, who happens to be the discouraged author of one of her most favorite book series.
Kyo chuckles before nodding, accepting her reasoning almost instantly. He definitely hopes he will get to run into her at some point. Have a good night Miss..." With a bow she exclaims happily," Tohru Honda! It's nice to meet you!" Waving goodbye, he turns to walk down the steps to his apartment below her. He knows that name from somewhere.
{Time skip}
Finally having finished unpacking, Tohru skims through her book shelf for something to read. Immediately she pulls out the first book to Mr, Sohma's "Banquet" series. Running her fingers gently over the cover, her fingers linger on the intricately written name "Kyo Sohma" and she blushes lightly. She never imagined he was such a beautiful man; more imagining him to be an older man, who's writing is a traditional teenage novel on the myth of the chinese zodiac.
A knock raps on her front door, lightly startling her out of her revere. Hurriedly she walks to the door, hoping for a certain ginger. Opening it, she comes face to face with a young man with white hair on the top and black underneath. "Oh, hello and good morning." With a bow, Tohru greets the young man politely. "Hello, I'm Sohma Hatsaharu, has a man with weird orange hair shown up at your door? He's short and kinda weird looking too."
With surprised confusion, Tohru glances behind the man, surprised to see exactly who she thought he was referring to. Although he looked quite annoyed, and ready to punch the hell out of the young man in between the two of them, he was wearing a muscle shirt and jogging pants. A flustering beauty even though he looks as if he just got back from a run.
Hatsaharu's eyes followed Tohru's uneasy gaze, looking over his shoulder. Kyo's large hand grabs him by the face, a dark look in his eyes as Hatsaharu laughs excitedly. "Kyo-kyon Welcome back to Kyoto!"
"Don't say that when you know you're in deep shit!" Hatsaharu laughs again and easily removes Kyo's hand from his face. "Cool it pussy cat, Shigure sensei is here for a copy of your newest manuscript." Kyo's face flushes at Tohru's confused expression but nods to Hatsaharu. "I'm in the apartment below this one. You shouldn't have come up here, you've probably scared her enough to want to move out of Kyoto." He says, looking Tohru's way with an apologetic smile.
"Oh! No it's completely fine! Mom says a little excitement is what makes the walls of a home stronger!" She says this as another man suddenly approaches her from the stairs. "Ah yes, words of a true poet! Our Kyo-kyon has a soft spot for poetry." The man says to her with a wink. Tohru blushes lightly and steals a glance at Kyo, instantly meeting eyes with him before he blushes and basically runs down the stairs. "Shigure! Here! Now!"
"Oh no~ it seems I've gotten myself in trouble. You have a good day miss-?"
"Oh! Honda Tohru! Thank you Sohma-sama!" She bows to him with a smile which he returns before walking down the stairs to the firey redhead waiting at the foot. "Shigure Sensei is only teasing Kyo because he's never had a girlfriend. Dorky nerd does have a thing for poets though, aren't you a poet? Honda Tohru?" His eyes were knowing, already having his answer. "Um, I dabble and I've written a couple poem collections but that's not very much. Even if I was good, I don't think Sohma-San would like me like that."
"I thought so. Kyo has heard of you. I'd even go as far to say he has both of your books and is a fan." Tohru's face flushes again, looking down thinking about the odds of him owning her books when he is a better author than her. Hatsaharu gives a knowing grin as he turned to go downstairs. Kyo's flustered aggravations being expressed rather loudly. Tohru giggles and goes to walk inside.
"Tohru Honda!" Came his voice, a blush splashes her face instantly at his forwardness in using her first name. Turning around, she finds a blushing Kyo Sohma. "Yes Sohma-San?"
"It's okay to call me Kyo, Sohma-San makes me feel old." his chuckle was airy as he approached Tohru with a book in his hand. "I'm sorry for not realizing sooner, but Haru told me you're a poet. I'm a big fan of your work, especially your spring poets." Holding out his hand, Kyo shows a beautiful cherry blossom themed book with "Spring" written in gorgeous italics with glitter dusted along the spine.
"Would it be too forward to ask you to get a coffee or something with me later?" Tohru's head flies upward at Kyo's question. Butterflies fly around in her belly and the idea that Haru is trying to set Kyo and her up runs through her mind. She should thank him at some point."How do you feel about ice-cream?"
An: Not as long as I was hoping so this is definitely going to be a two shot.
