Oneshot #10: Sinking Feeling
Situation: A pool has recently opened at Totsuki. The group discusses going and Erina confesses to Souma she can't swim and he agrees to help her so she can race against Alice, who is an elite swimmer.
"You can't swim?" Souma was shocked, to be honest. Erina was quite rich and good at a lot of things but she can't swim? It was strange to him.
"N-No...I can't swim and Alice wants to race against me!" Erina blushed. She didn't want anyone to know, especially this guy but she had no choice. She thought about Hisako but didn't think she could teach her and Hisako would also be busy with Hayama so low and behold, her knight in shining apron, Yukihira Souma.
"Never thought the mighty Erina would be bested by 163 centimeters or more of water." Souma giggled and she blushed.
"I-I'm going to ask someone else..." She sighed and Souma stopped her.
"I'm sorry for laughing, I'll make up for it and help you swim!" Souma gave her a grin and she nodded and blushed again. Souma headed off to his room at the Polar Star Dorm to change into blood-red swim shorts. Erina went back to her house and began examining her swimsuits.
'W-Well this revealing black one might be good! Souma might like it but what if he gets the wrong idea?! Maybe this red one? It's not that revealing and it's his favorite color...' Erina threw them on the bed and groaned.
"What's the matter, miss?" Hisako asked as she was walking by when she groaned.
"I can't decide what swimsuit to wear." Erina complained.
"Mm...the black one is a little too showy so I'd pick the red unless I was swimming with Hayama, then the black one so he-...I've said too much..." Hisako quickly walked away with crimson cheeks. Erina sighed and decided to go with the red since she thought it would be safer. After a while, Souma finally arrived at the pool. He was in awe of Erina's beautiful looks as he approached.
"You look good Erina." He smiled and she felt her heart jump out of her chest.
"D-Don't sneak up on me like that! B-But t-thanks..." Erina blushed a bit and looked away.
"So, ready to swim?" Souma smiled at her and Erina nodded reluctantly. She was still a little nervous but she was willing to put in the work to get better if it meant beating Alice. It also helped she got to spend time with Souma. Souma walked towards the steps and took a step into the pool.
"Wow, it's super cold." Souma shivered a bit as he walked down the steps and entered the water. Sunlight refracted in the pool, making it almost sparkle. The water Souma was in was 91 centimeters or 3 feet.
"O-Ok, I'm getting in!" Erina said determinedly. She closed her eyes and shook as she slowly took a step into the water. Her body cringed upon the cold water hitting her skin. However, she stood her ground and took another step into the pool.
"You're going great Erina! One more step!" Souma cheered her on and she felt confidence well inside her and she was ready to let it burst out.
'Ok, just another step. Souma said I was doing great so I can do this!' Erina nodded confidently and took the last step. Unfortunately, She had gone too fast to have her eyes closed and she began falling forward into the water.
"Erina!" Souma lunged forward to try and help out the Queen Of Totsuki. A loud splash filled the air as Erina fully went under. Luckily, Souma wasn't too far behind and he was able to get his arms around her and pull her back up. Erina lay in his arms, her vision blurry and water droplets covering her beautiful complexion. Her blonde hair floated behind her and Erina's eyes fluttered to get the water away from her eyes.
"Are you ok?" Souma asked her as she gripped onto him for dear life.
"I-I can't do this! Please let me out!" Erina begged Souma, gripping his shoulders and lightly shaking him.
"Come on Erina, you just got a little cocky. You can do this, I believe in you. You're the Queen of Totsuki for crying out loud! You wouldn't just let Alice win, right? Show her you're a thousand times better than she ever thought of being!" Souma smirked at her, basically issuing her a challenge to better her Nakiri cousin.
"F-Fine, fine! I'll show Alice why I'm called Queen! T-Thanks for encouraging me..." Erina blushed a bit.
"No problem! Now let's swim and kick Alice's ass!" Souma's eyes burned bright. Even though he wouldn't be competing, he had a dog in the fight so Erina was going to swim, Souma wouldn't let anything else happen.
'I already would've tried again after you said you believed in me, the extra bit was a little extra but thank you Souma...' Erina sighed in satisfaction and looked at Souma.
"O-Ok, I'm ready for you to let me go." Erina said shakily. Erina didn't want Souma to let go, for obvious reasons, but she did wanna learn how to swim and it was, of course, a little embarrassing for her. 'I'll miss your warmth...wait, what?!' Erina scolded her mind for thinking that.
"Sure! Just take it as slow as you need to." Souma slowly released his hold on Erina and she began to float before her feet touched the bottom of the pool and she stood up. Erina felt on cloud nine. She had actually gotten in the water and Souma wasn't holding her up or anything.
"I-I'm doing it...I'm actually doing it!" Erina exclaimed.
"Good job! Now we just need to start actually swimming." Souma told her and Erina nodded. Souma led her to the side of the pool and put her hands on the side of the pool. He explained that she needed to hold this and float so her legs were near the top of the pool and practice kicking for a while. 30 minutes had passed and Erina was definitely tired but she had gotten kicking down and Souma was very proud of her.
"You're doing a great job, now we can move onto the next part." Souma explained.
"T-Thank you, what's the next part?" Erina inquired.
"You need to float up so I can hold your ankles." Souma told her and she blushed.
"I-Is that necessary?!" Erina yelled, embarrassed.
"Yeah." Souma said, rather unfazed. Erina gave in and floated up so Souma could grab her ankles.
"Now you need to swing your arms to create force. I'll hold you back so you can practice while still." Souma explained and Erina nodded. She began swinging motions and water began splashing around her.
"Close your eyes if you need to, I got you!" Souma shouted over to her and Erina closed her eyes. She practiced for another 30 minutes.
"You did good! I'm so proud!" Souma said as he handed Erina a towel to dry off.
"T-Thanks for helping me..." Erina blushed as she dried her hair. She thought it felt wet and smelled it.
"Oh sorry, I could only find one towel so we have to share. I should've gone after you, sorry." Souma chuckled. Erina turned bright red and quickly dried off.
"H-Here!" She tossed the towel to Souma and he laughed. They began to walk back to Erina's house as the sunset.
"I had a good time, can't wait to watch you win tomorrow!" Souma exclaimed.
"Yeah, I-I had fun too, see you tomorrow!" Erina ran off embarrassed. Souma laughed and headed home.
'That girl is something else...Erina Yukihira sounds nice, doesn't it?'
The night passed and the sun arose, passing through Erina's window. She had just woken up and was pumped. She may have only had an hour of practice but she had been a natural and learned really quick so she should be able to hold her own. After getting into her swimsuit, she began to head to the pool. On the way, she met up with Souma.
"Hey Erina! Ready to win today?" Souma asked her with a grin.
"I-I'll do my best, so yeah, I'll win." Erina huffed.
"Then let's do it." Souma opened the gate to the pool and she walked in.
"Fufufu~! You showed Erina." Alice smirked.
"You always make it a competition Alice, and you always lose." Erina smirked back and the tension rose.
"Do not! Let's just swim already!" Alice argued and they lined up at an end of the pool. Erina thought back to all of Souma's encouraging words and she was ready.
"3...2...1...Go!" The student who was assigned as the ref declared the competition started and they both jumped in and began swimming. The race was neck and neck, which was already a huge accomplishment for Erina.
'She can do this!' Souma was studying the race and his eyes burned bright as he cheered Erina on. Water splashed hard as Erina and Alice gave their all in the race. Some students weren't paying attention and they elbowed Souma in the neck, knocking him out and into the pool. The students were all too focused on the race to realize Souma drowning. Erina felt an odd feeling of dread and decided to give up on the race and turn around to see what the splash had been. She looked horrified as Souma was sinking to the bottom of the pool. As Alice swam forward to win the race, Erina swam backward to save Souma. She wrapped her arm around Souma and swam upwards. She felt her strength leaving but she pushed through and got Souma onto the ground.
'Good, he's save.' Erina got out of the pool.
"You! Go get a towel!" Erina yelled at a student. The student yelped and ran off to get a towel. Erina checked Souma's pulse and he was still alive. Erina took a huge sigh of relief as the student got the towel back. Erina used it to dry Souma off and then they waited. After a minute or so, Souma threw up water and coughed. Erina practically dove into his arms.
"Thank god you're ok!" Erina didn't even care if it seemed like she was showing weakness. Souma asked what happened and Erina explained he had started drowning.
"Well, thanks for saying me Erina!" He rubbed her head. Erina blushed and mumbled how much of an idiot he was.
"How about a date to repay you!" Souma laughed and Erina jumped a bit.
"S-Sure..." Erina blushed bright crimson at the idea of going out with Souma.
"How about Friday?"
A/N: I'm sorry for not uploading as much. Also, it's the year anniversary! Happy One Year to Sorina Oneshots. I've had so much fun working on this and it seems you guys really like it so I'll try to upload more this summer. Also, I wanted to address this chapter. I feel like I didn't capture Souma and Erina's personalities very well in this and I'm sorry if you feel the same. I'll do my best to try and make it feel more Souma and Erina rather than Boy A and Girl A- Apex
