~MEL~
Every fibre of my being aches as I am carried into my cell. The agent sets me down on the cold floor, the pain in my chest so great that I can barely breathe. "Mel?" A worried Bucky asks, rushing over to my vegetated state. "What the hell did they do to you?" The agent leaves the room and I wheeze, random parts of my skin, hair and limbs changing and reforming.
"They-they used too much," I begin, my voice trembling. "They've done it before... I'll just have to... Sleep and... Drink more." Bucky furrows his brows, and I can almost see the cogs turning in his brain. "What did they use too much of?" I take a deep breath. "The serum to make me like this. Like a freak."
Bucky stands up, walking over to the walls of our cell and punching it with his metal arm. He keeps going. Over and over and over again. He yells out of frustration and anger, all the pent up rage being taken out on the wall. I don't try and stop him, as if I wasn't lying here, I would get up and punch the wall too.
"What are they trying to do to you?" He asks once he has finished. "They are changing me... They make me like animals, I can... Sound like them... Look like them... Gain their abilities and... Unique cells and structures... They've told me so many times... It's like it's burned into my brain... It just gets harder and harder. They experiment on me." Bucky comes and crouches back down by my side. He props me up against the wall, getting one of the cups of water from our meals and giving it to me.
"How often does this happen?" He questions. "Every week. They... They push me further each time... They want me to be ready now but I don't ever... Want to be ready... They'll use me as a weapon... And I don't want that. They took my family, my memories... And my humanity... But I want to keep my... Sanity."
Bucky sighs, running his hands through his greasy, dark hair. "I'll stop getting you to talk. Get some rest, I'm right here if you need me." He says. I laugh hysterically at his words, leaving him with a baffled expression. I sense his confusion, giving myself a bit of a grip.
"Bucky, where else would you be?"
I sit bolt upright, or try to. Restraints restrict my movement from my arms, torso and legs. I panic, the details of my dream already slipping from my grasp. I can remember that moment so vividly, but I never had the man named Bucky in it. What if I had known him? Were we friends? Family?
"Subject K041-" begins a man with an eyepatch. "The name's Mel," I spit. "And if you dare touch me or inject me with any serum, I'll rip your eyes out of your head and play pool with them." He rolls his eyes. "So we have another comedian, you'll get along with Stark just fine." I look at him bewildered, wondering who Stark is and why he's a comedian who works in HYDRA.
"You're safe from HYDRA now, you're within the walls of Stark tower, where you'll be staying until we find a facility that you can live in." My gaze turns to stone, fury building. "I've been awake for thirty seconds, and you're already telling me that I'll be leaving the only other thing I've ever known?" The man nods, not seeming to understand my dilemma.
"Can I see Bucky?" I ask him. This catches eyepatch completely off guard. "Mister Barnes is unavailable at the moment." He says in a tone emotionless and droning. "I'm unavailable at the moment. I have some an important ass-kicking session with HYDRA. Now tell me where I can find him and let me go. If you really want me to trust you, restraining me is not the way to do it."
Fury sighs, his mouth opening as if to say something but he is cut off by the door opening and Bucky striding into the room. "Mister Barnes is available at the moment. As much as you'd like to think it Fury, you aren't my director." He says, Fury's expression true to his name. With a look that kill, he leaves the room, letting it slam loudly.
"Mind removing the restraints?" I ask. "Are you going to try to escape?" Bucky replies hesitantly, firmly keeping his gaze on the leather straps. "Only if I need to." I say to him. After a few moments, it starts to get really quiet. "If you knew me and helped me, why would you leave me with those monsters?" I ask. Bucky sighs, trying to remove a restraint on my arm but failing miserably. "I didn't remember you until yesterday morning. Before that, I was too busy trying to pick up the remnants of my life seventy years into the future and before that, I was a brainwashed solider who almost killed the only person in his life he had left."
I nod, not meeting his gaze and look at the one-way mirror in perplexed interest. My vision turns infer-red, letting me see the vague shapes of figures watching us. Bucky notices my transfixed gaze. "You're in infer-red." I vaguely explain. He nods as if this is all normal, going back to removing the restraints. "Was I there when you were brainwashed?" I pose. "I don't know." He says, removing the last restraint.
"So what do we do now? I have a family out there -hopefully- and a whole life to destroy HYDRA's plans. Is there some sort of way I can be useful?" Bucky grins, giving me a flash of hope.
"You can start by telling me how you escaped HYDRA."
I bite my lip, looking him dead in the eye. "Tell me who's on the other side of the mirror."
"Mel-"
"How do you know my name?"
"It's complicated-" Bucky sighs, exasperated.
"I want to know what's going on."
"I have... Memories with you in them. I picked out that name for you, and you liked it. As for the mirror, it's just my teammates. They're not gonna hurt you, so don't worry." He reassures me. I turn away.
"Fine. I'll tell you what happened."
