Divakar's Journal - Entry One
Basically like Nova's Diary but from Divakar's POV. Will be based off his personal interactions, and won't overlap too many events with Nova. Might or might not end up including important info for catching up. Depends on if Nova was awake and/or present for it. If neither was present, I'll put it in a 3rd Person chapter.
I reached out for the dried beef and some water. Nova grabbed juice and chips, but I forced some beef into her hands as well. She rolled her eyes, but ate it anyway.
I looked around us again, surveying the people in the room. My eyes landed on a few familiar faces, but I was shocked to see Rei. I was pretty sure Tara wouldn't approve of this. But she seemed like she was trying to avoid people, so I left her be.
When the truck was parked, Joker whistle to a bird, giving it something before letting it fly off. "So, I would like to know your talents. What you can do?"
I heard a few mixed replies. Before Joker started talking again. "I'm sorry, the night is dangerous. Which is why we are parked and in place." He announced, sitting on a chair.
Nova smirked and looked at me. "Would you like a demonstration of our talents, or would you like us to state them?" She asked mischievously, pulling a necklace out of her pocket.
"Lynx!" I growled at her. "I'm sorry, she means no offense. Who's necklace is this? She'll return it at once." I said, addressing the group.
"I was already planning on returning it, Leo. I was just playing around." She shot back. "But seriously, who does this belong to? I wasn't paying attention to faces."
"It's mine, Leo." Said a familiar voice.
My eyes went wide as I recognized Rei.
Rei took the necklace from Nova and put it around her neck. "It's fine, Lynx. Just don't take it again." She turned to me, "don't worry about it, I'm just glad I got it back," she replied with a small smile.
"Heh. Yea. Let me know if Lynx gives you anymore trouble." I said laughing nervously.
"I said I was sorry!" Nova said, shoving me in the arm. I frowned and shoved her back.
We glared at each other before I popped one of her chips in his mouth. She gasped, "betrayal!"
"Anyways, water under the bridge? Nice to see you again." I said, ignoring Nova's dramatics.
"I will." Rei chuckled. "Yeah, nice to see you too. It's been a while, hasn't it."
"Definitely. How's—" I stopped myself. I had almost said Tara, but I wasn't sure how that would go down. "Life. Yea. Life." I said quickly.
"It's been better." Rei said. "Work's been hard to come by, which is why I took this job, but me and Tara are doing okay. I may or may not have had to resort back to stealing like before though," Rei admitted with a sigh. "No, she still doesn't know. I'm not gonna tell Tara about that, ever."
I nodded. I could understand that. Although I didn't have a problem with stealing myself, I knew it meant something to Rei.
I hadn't planned on taking Nova along on this job. It was my own fault for teaching her how to read. No matter how hard I tried I couldn't shake the image of the dead officer out of my head. "Too be honest, I didn't want Lynx here. I thought about finding someone to leave her with, but with always moving around..." I shook my head.
"It wouldn't really work, would it." Rei said, stretching her wings a bit. "I only got away without Tara coming because I didn't tell her when we had to meet and left her a note for her when I left. She almost pulled the 'I'm your big sister so I know better,' card on me too!"
"Ha! Must suck to be on the receiving end of that argument. Lynx says it's the worst." I chuckled. "Although, she's never listened to that once."
"It does. I know she's only looking out for me, but I still hate that argument." Rei smiled a bit, fiddling with her necklace. "At least I know she's safe though. Even if I will get yelled at when I get home."
"I wish I could say the same for Lynx. But she just wouldn't give in." I shook my head. "I'm just hoping we're alive after...well. After whatever this job is supposed to be."
"She definitely hasn't changed since I last saw you guys. Leo, Lynx is strong, she can take care of herself. You can't keep leaving her behind when you go on jobs forever, ya know." Rei said.
"I know, I know! It's just..." I sighed. "I worry. You saw what went down back in Junk Town, right?"
My stomach turned just thinking about it. The dead body was disturbing, sure, but the fact that Nova had been in the line of fire was what scared me most.
"Yeah, I saw." Rei went silent.
I sighed. I didn't really know what else to say. I looked over to my side. Then realization hit me. "Have you seen Lynx?!" I asked quickly. I tried to pick her out from the mess of people.
I saw her go over to talk to someone. I don't know who though," she replied. Rei looked around.
Sitting up as straight as I could, I finally spotted Nova. She was talking to... James? And sitting next to Simon. I breathed a sigh of relief. "She's with a friend of ours it seems." I said, relaxing a little.
"Alright, that's good. Rei said.
I yawned. "You know, you've been standing there for a while. Since Lynx is alright over there, you can sit with me if you want?" I offered.
Rei smiled slightly, and nodded.
"Thanks." She said, sitting next to me.
After a bit of silence she asked, "what've you and Lynx been up to since I last saw you?"
"Oh. Not much. A few heists, running from the police, trying not to get killed. The usual." I shrugged. I gave her a lopsided smile. "Lynx is still as troublesome as always but we find a way to keep things fun."
Rei chuckled. "I shouldn't have expected anything else."
After a beat passed I spoke up again. "What about you and Tara? Anything new?" I had missed Rei. We had meant to come around sooner rather then later, but then our camp had gotten raided while we were out one day and we got stranded without the supplies to make the trip. Then, we ended up here. But I wasn't about to worry Rei about that.
"Not much is new. We got a letter from our as*hole of a father though. Hasn't contacted us in years, and now he suddenly needs our help." Rei huffed.
I nodded. I hadn't heard from our own parents since Nova and I were sold as salves.
'It's for the best.' Dad had said.
'We can't feed you anyway.' Mom had said.
I sighed, looking over towards Nova. She was sleeping soundly against Simon, her book open on her lap. I was pretty sure she didn't have any memory of being sold, but that didn't matter. I knew she was hurt by it.
"Well, is it an interesting job at least?" I asked, trying to lighten the mood.
Rei made a small face. "Nah, he just wanted us to get rid of the 'bandits' stealing from him. It may or may not have been me who was stealing from him, so of course I said no. I would've said no anyway, because he literally abandoned us and took our brother with him. He deserves to be stolen from, and so much worse!" She half yelled the last part. Or maybe that was just my hearing being sensitive. She was gripping her necklace tightly.
I waited a second, giving her a bit to calm down while I thought of what to say. I've heard similar rantings from Nova, who had once had said if they ever found their parents she would 'give them a piece of her mind' for what they did to us. I was pretty sure 'a piece of her mind' meant a sharp knife in the heart. But tomato, tomata, I guess.
"Well if you ever need someone to go... check up on, your parents. I wouldn't necessarily mind paying them a visit." I offered with a nervous chuckle. "Nova definitely wouldn't mind."
Rei let go of her necklace, and I could see the imprint of the charm on her hand. She smiled slightly. "Thanks, Leo. For now, I don't think that's necessary, though."
I nodded, yawning slightly. It had been a long day. I glanced over at Nova, who was still sound asleep. "Should we mess with her while she's sleeping?" I asked with a tired chuckle.
Rei smirked a little. "Yeah, let's do it. But after you get some sleep. You seem tired," she replied. She stood and stretched a little.
I noticed Joker taking out a cigarette, lighting it before taking a long puff. "Good morning everyone. Hope you had a good night." He pressed a button and the truck started again. I looked a Nova, who slept through it.
"We will luckily make it to our destination mid day." Joker announced.
"As long as you get some sleep too," I smiled. "Lynx should be fine with Simon. I trust him well enough. Didn't kill Lynx when she failed to rob him so... yea. Heh."
"Alright, I will." Rei said.
I smiled. Leaning back I put my hands behind my head. I had enough people here that I knew, and trusted, so I should be fine. I opened my eye to look at Rei, who seemed to be asleep already. I smiled and relaxed, thinking about writing this all down in a pocket book I found the other day. Nova made it look fun. And so I went to sleep replaying the events of the day over in my head. Maybe this job wasn't such a bad idea after all.
