Animal Avengers
Battles with Loki could just never be simple, could they? Of course, most of the time, they weren't fighting Loki up-front. It was usually some army he'd sent or some kind of spell he'd cast that they had to reverse. But now was one of the rare times that they were actually fighting him. It was difficult. No one could get close enough to get in a hit or to disable him. Clint, Thor, and Tony were trying to hit him from a distance, but he would just deflect their attacks.
Steve was getting frustrated. He couldn't do anything except help protect his teammates and use the gun Natasha had offered him. They wouldn't allow him to throw his shield.
"Tony, I'm gonna throw it," he'd said.
"No," Tony had immediately countered. "If he catches it, we have no protection."
Steve was now really regretting Tony's decision. It was hard. He wasn't used to not throwing it. But his control over the reflex was getting better. Or so he thought.
Loki had aimed a particularly nasty blast of energy at Clint. Steve had jumped in front of it, using his shield to cover himself and deflect the blast. It did, but he was thrown several feet. As he stood, his blood was boiling. If it did that to him, even with his shield up, imagine what it would do to an unprotected Clint. All control was out the window as he threw the shield at Loki with as much power as he could muster.
"Steve! No!"
Steve ignored Tony and rushed at Loki after he let go of the shield. The God of Mischief easily caught the shield. He turned his attention to the thrower. Steve should've known it was coming; he really should have. But he was not ready to face the beam of energy headed his direction when it came. He was still running when it hit him and knocked him over. It burned; seared his skin and ripped a scream from his throat.
The rest of the team watched in horror for a moment before focusing all their energy back on Loki. This time, Loki just laughed and blasted them all one at a time. He took Natasha down first, and then Clint as Natasha's scream distracted the archer. The Hulk was next; even the gamma radiation couldn't protect him from magic. Tony may have been a bit harder to hit since his flying made it easier for him to dodge, but eventually he dropped like the others. Loki turned his magic on Thor, but the God of Thunder blocked it easily with Mjolnir. Loki grinned, and put his arms at his sides.
"I'm not going to get you as easily, am I, brother?"
Thor only narrowed his eyes, "What have you done, Loki?"
Loki laughed, "You will see."
And with that, Loki vanished. Thor lowered himself out of the sky and pulled his friends together into one area. All of them were unconscious, and Bruce had de-hulked. Thor sat next to them as he waited for the helicarrier to fly overhead.
The helicarrier did not make an appearance, but Director Nick Fury and Agent Maria Hill drove up in one of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s jeeps. Maria parked and they both ran over to the team.
"What happened?" Maria asked, kneeling next to the unconscious Avengers.
"Loki used his magic on them," Thor answered. "Though I know not what it will do."
Fury sighed, "Well, let's get them on the carrier and back to HQ. Load them on the jeep."
It was a quiet flight. None of the other Avengers had woken back up yet, but they were being monitored. And, thankfully, nothing noteworthy happened until they were back at the headquarters. One of the agents monitoring the team called in the director due to, quote, "something wrong with Captain America's face."
Fury, Maria, and Thor immediately hurried down to the sick bay. There was, indeed, something wrong with Steve's face. In fact, there was something wrong with all of the unconscious Avengers' faces. They were becoming more and more animalistic; not only their faces, but their bodies as well. Thor, Fury, and Maria waited and watched from the monitors in the observation room. It took a couple of hours. But the team slowly morphed into animals. They were tangled up in their suits – or regular clothes in Bruce and Tony's cases. Steve had become a golden retriever; Tony was a grey fox; Clint was now a red-tailed hawk; Natasha had morphed into a calico cat; and Bruce had been turned into a brown bear.
It took them nearly another half hour to wake up. By then, they had been moved to an indoor training field, complete with fake grass and trees. Steve was the first one to wake up. He stretched and yawned before sitting back and scratching behind his ear with his hind leg. It all looked like this was perfectly normal for him; as if he'd been a dog all his life. But then he seemed to realize what he was doing. He looked back at his hind leg and then jumped in shock. He chased his tail for a moment, just trying to see his back and hind legs. He stopped and looked down at his front legs. He looked around frantically for a moment and then froze when he saw his teammates. He took a few steps back and then opened his mouth.
"What the- BARK! BARK!"
Steve's jaw snapped shut. Did he just, bark? He whined, upset. Looking around and realizing he had no idea where he was made it worse. He lay down and covered his eyes with his front paws. This cued Maria, Thor, and Fury to head for the training room. When Maria opened the door, Steve jumped up and spun around. His teeth here bared and he was snarling as if the expected to be attacked. But as he registered the faces in front of him, his whimpering was back. He ran forward and jumped up on Maria.
Maria held the sides of Steve's head and scratched behind his ears while he knelt down so that she would be at his level. He licked her face and then laid his head just below her chin. Maria wrapped an arm around Steve's neck and shoulders as a hug and scratched his back and sides with her other hand.
"It'll be alright, Steve. You're in one of the training rooms. We'll figure this out."
Steve whined again and opened his mouth to speak, "What happ – BARK! – happened?"
Maria winced at the bark in her ear, but she didn't stop petting him in hopes that it would calm him down.
Thor answered him, "Loki turned the team into animals."
"Can – YIP! – can you fix it?"
Thor shook his head, "Not I. But if I can find him, there may be a way to convince him to reverse the spell."
Steve nodded, "Do it."
Thor nodded to Fury and then left the training room and the base. There was a universe to search.
Fury looked over the rest of the team. Natasha had woken up and was watching them. Clint was also awake and preening. Tony was somewhere between awake and asleep, and Bruce was still out. Natasha strutted over and then sat in front of Steve and Maria.
"You alright, Cap?"
Steve nodded, "I am, now."
Maris took that as her hint to remove herself from Steve. She stood back up and folded her arms across her chest.
"So, are we just going to stay in here?" Natasha asked.
Fury nodded, "Until we can get you back to normal, this is the best place for you."
Steve looked back at the rest of his team. Tony was awake and looking over himself, making sure the arc reactor was okay. Bruce was awake and had lumbered off to sit under the trees where he seemed to be calming himself down. Clint had perched himself in a tree and looked to be starting a nest.
Steve looked back up at Fury and nodded, "Alright. How do we get ahold of you if we need you?"
"Agent Hill will be watching from the control room. If you need something, just say so."
Steve nodded at Maria and then looked over at Natasha, who also nodded. They watched as Maria and Fury walked out of the room and the door closed behind them. Tony trotted up to them.
"So, where's Thor?"
"Off to find Loki," Natasha answered. "We're stuck until he gets back."
Tony looked at Steve, "And whose fault is that?"
Steve's eyes narrowed, "Loki's. So, I guess we'll just have to occupy ourselves."
Natasha looked up into one of the trees, "Clint's working on it."
Tony and Steve looked up and saw that Clint had already constructed a nest. Steve chuckled can called up to him.
"You're taking this rather well, Hawk!"
Clint shrugged his wings, "Hey, if hanging around with you people has taught me anything it's to roll with the weird stuff."
Tony laughed and Natasha and Steve smiled. Bruce finally walked back over the rest of the group. He plopped onto his butt in front of his other three teammates. Steve walked over and set his smaller paw on top of Bruce's bigger one.
"You alright?"
Bruce nodded, "Yeah. I'll be alright. I just had a bit of a shock is all."
Natasha jumped up onto his shoulder and curled up, "At least you're soft."
Bruce's chuckle rumbled deep in his chest.
Maybe they would have been fine as animals for a few hours, maybe even a few days or a week. But a month passed and Thor still wasn't back with Loki. Tony was pining for his lab, and Bruce was ready for his bed. Natasha and Steve just wanted a change of scenery. Clint was still happy with his nest, though he sort of wished they'd let some mice in so that he could hunt them with Natasha. It would at least make it a little interesting for them. There were dog and cat toys, and food was brought in regularly for each of them. Steve and Tony had gotten sick of the dog rope after the first week. Steve would always pull Tony over, and it "wasn't fair that he was a super-dog".
Of course, this wasn't the only thing Steve and Tony were sick of. They were sick of each other. Though they were normally good friends, Tony was mad at Steve for getting them turned into animals and Steve was mad at Tony for constantly trying to play the blame game. No one had any idea when they were getting changed back, and Tony's accusations and whining weren't helping anyone. Steve was about ready to snap.
It was the middle of the fifth week.
"So, what do you want to do today?" Natasha asked her teammates as they all gathered in a circle - all except for Clint, who participated from his nest.
"I know," Tony chirped. "How about we finally find out why the hell Steve decided it would be a good idea to toss his Frisbee – our only real protection – at the maniac who was attacking us?"
Everyone froze, and Steve felt his frustration and anger boil up in his chest again.
Natasha took a step in-between the two of them, "Tony... "
"No!" Tony stopped her and walked around her to get in Steve's face. "What the hell were you thinking? We would have figured something out! Why didn't you follow the plan?"
"There was no plan!" Steve ground out. "All you said was to not throw my shield. And it was a bad call."
"Throwing the shield was a bad call!" Tony countered. "Look where it got us!"
"At least you're not dead Tony!" Steve shouted, a growl rumbling in his chest even after.
"But we could be! You had no way of knowing what he would do to you or the rest of us! Is that getting into your big, stupid head, Rogers, or do I have to repeat myself?"
Steve bared his teeth and crouched as if to pounce. Tony took a step back.
"Say it again," Steve growled. "I dare you."
"Steve..." Natasha tried. But Steve interrupted her with a growl.
Tony gulped and bared his own teeth, trying to look tough, "You heard me, Rogers. You were too stupid to realize that you could have gotten the rest of us killed."
Steve pounced.
He grabbed Tony by the scruff of the neck – not hard enough to break skin, but certainly hard enough to leave marks. He whipped his head around and threw Tony across the lawn. The man-turned-fox rolled a few times and then hit a tree. Steve might've chased him, but there were suddenly two arms around his neck and chest, holding him back.
"Steve." It was Maria. "Stand down."
Her voice was quiet, but her tone was commanding. Steve turned his head to look at her. She began to scratch his ear and chest, which calmed him down. Steve looked back at Tony. The genius was getting up with help from another agent, who was looking him over for injuries. Tony raised his head to meet Steve's eyes, but Steve couldn't make eye-contact. He was too ashamed. He could have really hurt Tony, and that was on top of getting them all turned into animals. He turned his head slightly to the left and muttered something to Maria.
"What was that?"
Steve raised his voice a bit, but he hoped it wasn't loud enough for the others to hear, "Is there somewhere else I can stay?"
Maria frowned, "What do you mean?"
"I mean, we have some extra holding cells right?"
Maria moved to crouch in front of the soldier-turned-dog, "Steve, you're not a criminal."
"Please? I can't... I can't stay in here with Tony."
Maria sighed, "Follow me."
Maria stood and began to walk back towards the door. Steve followed her, his eyes glued to her heels. He couldn't look at Tony or any of his other teammates. He followed her down the corridor and into one of the holding cells.
"Steve, we could set you up in a real room."
"This is fine."
"Do you want anything? Your shield maybe?."
"This is fine."
Maria sighed, "Fine. Bark if you need anything."
Maria left, closing the door behind her. Steve walked over to the cot in the back right corner and crawled under it. He laid his head on his paws and closed his eyes.
Natasha was pacing angrily across the lawn. She hissed every time Clint or Tony tried to talk to her, so they'd finally given up. Bruce was hiding in a clump of trees, calming himself down. Clint now sat up in his nest, brooding. Tony was laying down under one of the artificial oak trees, curling up in its nest of roots. He'd never seen Steve get mad like that. His shoulders were still hurting, but he supposed he deserved it – especially after seeing the dejected way Steve walked out. Tony watched Natasha pace. She was still growling to herself. She paused a moment and turned her head to face Tony, just as if she'd felt him looking. Her eyes narrowed and she hissed at him before returning to her pacing.
Tony covered his eyes with his paws. What had he done?
Another two weeks passed without any word from Thor. But Tony was getting a mouthful from Natasha.
"You couldn't just leave it alone, could you?"
"Nat, I..."
"Don't interrupt me! It doesn't matter that we're animals! At least we aren't dead! Steve did what he did to protect Clint, in case you hadn't noticed. He was doing his job. He was trying to keep us safe! And you harassed him for it!" Natasha got even more riled up as she thought about it. "And did you hear what Maria just told us? He's not eating! He won't come out from under the bed!"
"I don't control him!"
"You hurt him, Tony! You guys were friends and then you had to go and jab at him like that. He hadn't been anything but patient with you for the past month and you pushed him over the edge. He thinks he's failed all of us. He hates himself because of what might have happened. He was able to focus on the good and you shattered that mindset. He couldn't even look at any of us as he walked out!"
Tony's tail tucked between his legs.
Natasha had to walk away before anything got physical. Clint was flying angrily around the room. He couldn't get the image his mind created out of his head. Steve, a golden retriever, hiding under the bed and looking like someone had kicked him over and over again; thin and malnourished because he felt like he didn't deserve to eat.
Bruce's mind had made a similar image, and he was currently clawing up one of the trees to calm himself down. Steve had been nothing but kind to any of them, and had been trying to save Clint from Loki. He had no right to be pushed around the way Tony had pushed him.
The next time Maria came in, Natasha asked if she could see Steve.
"I guess. I don't know what he'll do."
Natasha followed Maria down the hall to the holding cell Steve had insisted on staying in. Maria opened the door just enough for Natasha to squeeze in. The door closed behind Natasha and she took a quick look around the room. It was clean, and empty except for the cot, a bowl of water under the cot, and a big golden retriever that was also under the cot.
"Jesus, Steve. At least sleep on the bed."
Steve tried to squish himself farther back against the wall. Natasha walked over and laid down in front of Steve. She leaned forward and licked his nose, which made him sneeze.
"Sorry."
Natasha moved to curl up next to him, "It's alright." She peered into the water dish. "At least you're drinking water."
"That's kinda necessary."
"So is eating and getting decent sleep."
Steve shrugged, "I'm just not hungry."
"You're starving yourself."
Steve didn't answer. He stared at the floor and rested his head on his paws. Natasha scooted forward and nuzzled Steve's cheek before licking it a few times. Steve whined and Natasha realized just how sad he was.
"Steve, you didn't do anything wrong."
"We all could've died."
"Better than just losing Clint. You did your job, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that."
Steve turned his head and nudged Natasha's cheek with his nose; he figured licking her would be too wet, so this would have to do.
They laid there for a while, just glad for the company. It was only a half and hour later when Maria opened the door.
"We just got a message from Thor. He's on his way with Loki."
Natasha crawled out from underneath the cot and headed towards the door. She turned back around when she realized she didn't hear Steve following her.
"Steve, come on."
Steve was reluctant, but he followed her anyway. Back in the training room, Clint was the first to greet them as he landed on Steve's head.
"You scared us, man. Don't ever do that again."
Steve smiled as best he could, "Thanks."
Bruce wandered out from his hiding spot when he heard the extra voice. He sighed with relief when he saw that, even though he hadn't been eating, Steve still looked healthy – most likely due to the serum.
Tony looked up from his place among the tree roots, but he didn't say anything or go over. He wasn't ready to face Steve yet. Steve saw Tony lay his head back down and felt his insides twist just a little. Was Tony still mad at him? Or was he sorry? Well, he wasn't going to get an answer yet. The door opened again and Thor strode in, pulling Loki with him. The God of Mischief was smiling and chuckling.
"Fine, fine, brother. I'll turn them all back." His face turned serious. "But you must set me free afterwards."
"What makes you think we'll do that?" Fury asked from the doorway, where he was standing with Maria.
Loki made eye contact with him, "Because if you don't, I'll not turn them back. They are far too amusing like this. If you keep me here, I want to keep them like this."
Fury maintained eye contact with Loki for a minute before reluctantly nodding. Loki turned to the animal Avengers. All of them were glaring at him, and Tony had even stood up to do so. Loki grinned and snapped his fingers.
He was gone. Steve and Bruce growled, and Natasha hissed. Clint's feathers ruffled and Tony bared his teeth.
But then they all felt it. Their bones were growing and moving, their muscles and skin were stretching – their faces were condensing. And it hurt like hell. They were all moaning and groaning and trying not to cry as they felt like they were being turned inside-out. Maria and Nick had to look away.
It lasted only about thirty seconds, but it felt like thirty minutes to the Avengers. As it ended, Steve, Natasha, Clint, and Bruce tried to figure out how to untangle all of their legs from each other. Tony was using the tree to pull himself up off the ground. He leaned against the tree and watched as Steve pulled Natasha up, and then Clint, and then Bruce. Clint then turned and pulled Steve into a hug.
"Hey, man. I never thanked you for saving my ass."
Steve smiled, "Don't mention it."
Natasha hugged Steve next, "You gonna be alright, big guy?"
"I'll be fine. Thanks, Nat."
"Don't mention it."
Steve smirked before turning around and putting a hand on Bruce's shoulder, "You alright?"
"Never better."
"Good."
The small group made to follow Fury, Maria, and Thor out. But Bruce stopped and turned around, "You coming, Tony?"
Tony jerked away from the tree, "Uh, yeah." He jogged to catch up.
They flew back to the Tower and each enjoyed sleeping their own bed.
It was another month or so before they had their next mission, and Steve and Tony hardly spoke to each other. Maybe a passing "good morning" or "hey", but for the most part they steered clear of each other. The rest of the team was worried. Sure, the two weren't fighting. But if they were they'd actually be talking. What would happen if they needed to work together on the battlefield? That question was answered soon enough.
Von Doom was attacking New York, again, and the Avengers were called in. Tony and Steve had worked together flawlessly; as if nothing had happened. The only difference was the absence of the good-natured banter the two often shared. The walk back to the Tower was quiet. They all went to their rooms and showered before meeting back on the common floor for a movie. Steve and Tony sat on opposite sides of the couch with Bruce and Clint in-between them. Natasha sat on the floor in front of Steve and Clint. They watched Airplane, and everyone laughed at all the terrible jokes.
Steve was heading to bed after the movie finished when Natasha stopped him.
"Are you and Tony alright?"
Steve frowned, "Yeah.... Why?"
Natasha crossed her arms, "You guys aren't talking."
Steve crossed his arms, "We talk."
"Passing each other in the hall and saying 'hi' isn't 'talking'."
Steve looked down at his shoes, "We're fine, Natasha. We're just not ready to 'talk' yet."
Natasha sighed and put her hands on Steve's shoulders, "You guys need to work it out soon. The rest of us are worried."
"You don't need to be."
"I'll believe that when it feels right."
"I'm going to bed."
"Goodnight, Steve."
"Goodnight, Nat."
The next morning was awkward for Steve. He and Tony could hold an adult conversation, right? He waited in the kitchen until Tony came up from the lab for coffee.
"Good morning, Tony."
"'Morning, Steve."
"How was your night?"
Tony looked up at his teammate suspiciously, "Um, fine. I got some good work done. Uh, did you sleep well?"
Steve nodded, "Yeah. I didn't have any nightmares, so that's getting better." Tony nodded and turned to coffee maker so that he could start a pot. Steve stopped him, "I already made some."
Tony grabbed a mug from the cabinet and poured himself a cup of coffee, "Thanks."
"No problem."
Tony raised his mug to Steve and then turned to go back to his lab, "Have a good day, Steve."
"You, too!"
Steve stood there for a moment before pouring himself a cup of coffee.
"That was painful to listen to."
Steve jerked in surprise as he was pouring creamer into his coffee. He turned around and saw Clint in the doorway. Steve huffed and turned back to his coffee.
"Yeah, well, we need to start talking again."
Clint smirked at Steve's back, "Your words, or Natasha's?"
"Does it matter?"
Clint walked over and put a hand on Steve's shoulder, "Hey, man. We're all worried about you guys. But don't force it if it's not ready to come yet, alright?"
Steve nodded, "Alright."
"Good." Clint looked around Steve at the coffee maker. "Is there any left?"
"Yeah."
"Awesome."
There were another few weeks of lull before alarms were suddenly going off in the Tower. Steve yanked on his uniform and grabbed his shield and helmet as he headed for the elevator. Upon reaching the common floor, he was filled in. Loki was back, and he seemed hell-bent on destroying the Statue of Liberty. Thor was currently distracting him, but they all knew it wouldn't last for long. They landed the jet on Liberty Island and filed out – except Tony, who joined Thor in the air. Bruce stayed in the jet, careful to not Hulk out until it was absolutely necessary.
Clint fired and arrow and it, combined with Thor and Tony, provided enough of a distraction for Steve to throw his shield. It hit Loki in the chest and pushed the trickster back a few feet. He chuckled as he caught his breath. Steve caught his shield.
"You finally got me, Captain," Loki taunted.
"Yeah, well, I had help this time."
Loki grinned at him, "No amount of help will save your monument. People look up to it, yes? It will be the first in your world to fall, and it will not be the last."
"How about neither?"
The Avengers attacked with everything they had. Loki seemed to be content with playing defense. He was saving up his power, but that didn't mean he wasn't prepared to use it if need be. And apparently it needed to be.
Natasha had had just made a series of shots at Loki, and he took one at her to keep her from getting too close. Maybe she could have dodged, but Steve was not having any of it. He jumped in front of Natasha and deflected the blast with his shield. The energy bounced off and hit Loki in the chest.
Steve threw his shield, thinking Loki was distracted, but he caught it. Loki gave Steve his Cheshire-cat smile.
"Perhaps Lady Liberty will not be the first national icon to fall."
Steve barely registered the remark before the light hit him and everything went black.
"Steve!"
Tony watched hopelessly as his friend was thrown out into the water. Clint was already running after Steve, so Tony focused his energy on Loki.
"J.A.R.V.I.S., all power to the reactor."
"Yes, sir."
Tony aimed, and let the energy go. Loki hit the dust, and Thor quickly held him down with Mjolnir. Tony flew down to the water and helped Clint pull Steve out. They laid him out at the water's edge.
"He's not breathing," Clint said.
"Oh, come on, Steve," Tony huffed. "Don't make us do this."
Natasha shoved him out of the way, "I don't know what you're waiting for, Stark."
She started giving Steve CPR and stopped when she could feel him breathing on his own. They loaded him and Loki onto the jet and headed to S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters for medical attention and to lock up.
Maria stood with them outside Steve's recovery room.
"He's not gonna wake up for a while," Maria told them. "Even with the serum, it's gonna take him a while to bounce back from that." She looked them over. "You guys should go home and change, he'll be here when you get back."
The team reluctantly left. They flew back to the Tower to shower and change clothes. Once they'd all gathered back on the common floor, they decided who should go back and stay with Steve.
"I'll go," Tony offered. "I stay up for days at a time anyways."
"Tony, are you sure that's a good idea?" Natasha asked.
"Yeah," Bruce agreed. "You guys are having trouble even holding a conversation."
Tony frowned, "I want to be there when he wakes up, alright? He and I need to talk."
Natasha stared at him for a moment before nodding, "Go on. We aren't gonna stop you."
Tony suited up and flew to the headquarters. Maria cleared him to sit with Steve. And sit with Steve he did – for nearly a week. Each day was long and Tony was starting to feel like he couldn't stand to see Steve comatose anymore. It was Friday, and he was starting to talk to Steve.
"You know, you have to wake up soon," Tony said to Steve. "The team's worried. It's been a week. Well, over a week, technically. It's been eight days. Nine days in a few hours." Steve didn't move. "I mean, I know you have that stuff running through your veins. You should be awake by now, right?"
Tony sighed and just stared at Steve for a few moments before looking back down at his hands, "Steve, I need you to wake up. We need to talk, alright? I was wrong to yell at you. You were saving Clint. That's part of your job. We're supposed to keep people safe, even each other. And that's what got you in trouble now. I mean, what you're doing is right. But, at least think about what your actions will cause once in a while. Steve, I love you, man. But I just think you should be more careful. I'm sorry for making you lash out at me and making you upset. But you have to wake up so I can tell you."
"A second time?" a croaky voice said.
Tony's head jerked up and he saw Steve looking at him.
"Steve? How much...?"
"It's part of my job," Steve rasped. He frowned, "Water?"
Tony hurriedly poured Steve a glass of water and helped him drink it.
"Easy, Cap."
Steve lay back on the pillows. "Thanks," He sounded better.
"No problem."
They sat in silence for a few minutes before Steve broke it, "I forgive you, Tony."
"Thanks."
Steve took a deep breath, "Can you forgive me for attacking you?"
Tony reached up and laid his hand on Steve's forearm, "I don't need to. You had every right."
"Tony."
Tony sighed. Why did this man have to be so stubborn?
"I already have, Steve."
Steve smiled at Tony and looked down at the hand that was still holding his arm. He smiled wider, "So, we're friends again?"
Tony smiled, "Yeah."
Steve laughed, "Good. I think Natasha was about ready to lock us in a closet together."
"That would be weird."
"Yeah."
"How long do you think we have until the doctors realize I'm awake?"
"I locked them out."
Steve huffed, "Tony!"
"Fine, fine."
Tony got up and let the doctors in and to call the team. At least he'd gotten to talk to Steve, uninterrupted. Now everyone else could have their turn.
"You know, Tony," Steve called after him, "you made a great fox"
