Chapter 6

"And I was about to get it off, too." Evan said, staring at the new cast. He had woken up in the hospital, after getting knocked unconscious. Carrie had called the ambulance. When he woke up, she was standing there to make sure he was okay, but he freaked out when he saw her. He remembered what he saw her do. She was even the reason why he fell out of that tree. The doctors said that it could be the medication and grogginess playing tricks on his mind... It made a bit of sense. He could have combined Carrie in the hospital with the sight of falling leaves. Besides, it made less sense to believe she was a witch or something anyway.

Veronica patted his back. "Sorry, buddy." She said. "Hey, mind if we sign?" She asked.

"Is there even any room left?" Michael laughed. "Who's Connor?"

Christine, seeing Evan's new cast, had told Connor to try and sign his name on it. Connor had marched up to him, and signed his name in huge letters. Evan was a little freaked out, needless to say.

Veronica signed, then passed her orange sharpie to Michael. He signed, and passed the sharpie to Jeremy, who signed his name much bigger than Michael and Veronica.

"Show-off." Veronica chuckled.

"You wrote yours in Evan's handwriting, Veronica."

"I thought it would be cool." She huffed.

"If by cool, you means gives off the impression that Evan had to write someone else's name, then  yes." Michael said.

"Or creepy that you can forge my handwriting."  Evan looked at his cast. "You're actually pretty good at that."

"You have no idea."

"What does that mean?" Evan asked.

"Oh, some stuff that I did with my old boyfriend back at Westerburg... It was a wreak. My life honestly went to hell after leaving the Heathers." She said.

"Do you think your life would have been better if you hadn't left?" Evan asked.

Veronica thought. "Yeah. But I wouldn't be able to live with myself."

Veronica was so wrapped up in her own thoughts that she didn't even realize the Heathers were coming up being her. They swiftly passed by as Chandler swiped Veronica's purse, just for fun.

They sat down together, as MacNamera curiously rooted through Veronica's purse. "There's nothing fun in here." She said.

"Let me look." Duke pulled the purse over forcefully. "Liar. She's got a pill in here." Duke pulled out a grey, oblong pill, the one that Veronica had found after bumping into Rich. "Wonder what it's for?"

"Here, let me see." Zoe said, holding out her hand. "My family has a lot of medications on hand." Duke dropped the pill into her hand. Zoe examined it. "I don't recognize this one, actually. Maybe it's some kind of experimental drug." She said, putting it down beside her plate.

"Well, that's lame." Duke scoffed. "Some help you are."

"Oh, don't be so hard on her. Not yet. She's doing better than Veronica ever did. I mean, I could dismiss the Carrie situation as desperate, but you may have phycologically damaged her. I'm impressed." Chandler said.

While the four girls talked, Zoe couldn't help but feel awful. She desperately wanted to apologize to Carrie, but if she did, she'd end up like Veronica; miserable. She quietly ate her food, adding the occasional comment when it seemed right. She hadn't even noticed that the grey pill from Veronica's purse had made its way into her macaroni. She didn't even notice when it snuck onto her spoon, totally oblivious as she swallowed it.

The day passed by as normal, until the end of the day. Zoe and the Heathers stopped by a café on the way home. Chandler got an iced camp, MacNamera bought a banana smoothie, Duke just bought a water bottle, and Zoe... Zoe bought a mountain dew. It was the only soda they had at the time, and she really wanted one.

Zoe excused herself to go to the bathroom. When she looked in the mirror, she cried. "What is wrong with you? Torturing that girl, stealing Veronica's purse? This isn't me." She leaned up against the stall. "Life would be so much simpler if I could just turn off my guilt with the flick of a switch."

But she put her doubts aside, splashed her face with some water, and took a swing of Mountain Dew to clear her throat.

Then came the pain. She thought she was dying. A splitting pain ran through her head, as she heard a voice. "Calibration in progress. Please excuse some mild discomfort."

"Mild?" She shouted to herself.

"Uh, Zoe?" It was MacNamera. She was at the door. They must have heard the screaming. "Calibration complete. Access procedure initiated." The pain stopped.

"Uh, no, I'm fine!" She shouted. "I just-"

"Discomfort level may increase." Zoe started screaming again. She muffled herself to keep the screaming silent. "Accessing; neural memory. Accessing; muscle memory. Access procedure complete. Zoe Murphy, welcome to your Super Quantum Unit Intel Processor. Your SQUIP."
