Chapter 5

Jeremy searched the hallways for Carrie, hoping to figure out what happened. What did that girl mean about pig's blood? And prom? If the Ewen High fire happened on prom night, did Carrie have something to do with it?

Eventually, he found her, crying under the staircase. She was a mess. She was clutching onto her Bible, mumbling a prayer under her breath. She looked up at him, eyes filled with tears.

"Go ahead and laugh. I'm used to it." She said, wiping her nose. Jeremy stepped closer, cautiously. The SQUIP incident had actually made him a little more confident, so he knew that he had a chance at calming her down.

"I'm not going to laugh. Promise." He gave a nervous chuckle. "Well, I mean I just did but- not at you, and- sorry."

Carrie giggled too.

"You mind if I sit here?" Jeremy pointed next to her.

Carrie moved over. Jeremy smiled awkwardly and sat next to her. "So... Just making sure I've got this right. It IS Carrie, right?"

"White. It's Carrie White."

"No, I mean, I was confirming it."

"Oh. Sorry."

They were silent for a bit, before Jeremy finally spoke up. "So.... Who's Tommy? I'm asking because you said I looked like him this morning, so.... Yeah."

Carrie looked her feet. "He was a boy who I liked back at Ewen High. He was dating this girl named Sue, but he decided to take me to the prom instead. You just... Kinda look like him.

*Side Note: No. They actually look nothing alike. Point is, Carrie is kind of projecting heere.*

"Can you... Can you tell me what happened that night?" Asked Jeremy.

Carrie took a deep breath. "They all laughed at me. Everyone. They teased me and pushed me all the time. So when Tommy asked me to prom, I thought I had a chance to make them like me. So I made my own dress, and for a few seconds, everything was perfect. I was even voted prom Queen."

"So what happened?" Asked Jeremy, leaning in.

"Turns out, the ballot for prom Queen was rigged. One of the bullies, Chris, she just wanted to get me up onstage. She and her stupid boyfriend killed a pig and put its blood in a bucket."

"They didn't." Jeremy's jaw hung open. This couldn't be going where the thought it was going. That was just too sick.

"They... They dumped the blood on me. And everyone laughed. I ran away, but just after I left, the school was in flames. I can only assume it was Billy and Chris being awful again." Carrie wrapped her arms around her legs, her head resting on her knees. "Everyone died except me. Tommy died too."

"I'm so sorry..." Jeremy looked back at her. "That's just... Sick."

"I still wish that night could have gone well. I just wanted to be normal for a night." She sniffed. "I wish I was just like everyone else. Just... Normal, and cool, and chill-"

Jeremy knew where this was going. "YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE!" He shouted, jumping up. Carrie looked up at him. "You just have to believe that things can be better. You can't jump to what you think is the solution, because it could make things even worse. For now, focus on the good things."

"But... Even before the fire... I never had any good moments. Sometimes things were good with Mama, but not truly. The only good moment I ever had was at the prom, dancing with Tommy."

Jeremy smiled. He had an idea. If this didn't make her feel better, nothing would. Besides, ever since he and Christine broke it off; he had been looking for a date to the homecoming dance. "Well, then. Carrie White; Will you go to the homecoming dance with me?" He asked.

Carrie looked up. "I don't like being tricked." She said.

"I'm not tricking you. Promise."

Carrie was silent for a few seconds, before finally speaking. "I'll try."

"Great. see you Saturday."  Jeremy grabbed his bag, but Carrie stopped him.

"Jeremy, I just wanted to ask..." Jeremy turned around. "What does boyf mean?"

"It's a long story." Jeremy laughed and rubbed his neck awkwardly.

"You really think... I can be normal?" Asked Carrie.

Jeremy smiled. "You don't have to be normal. You're beautiful inside, right? Try spreading that beauty around. Make something beautiful that extends beyond you."

*Side Note: What the heck, when did Jeremy get so deep?*

Jeremy left, Waving back at her, and Carrie waved back, left alone with her thoughts. "Something beautiful...."

Meanwhile, Jeremy was feeling good about himself. He was being nice to Carrie, doing a good deed. And besides, she knew that he just asked her as a friend, right?

The answer was no. In fact, in Carrie's mind, Tommy Ross had just asked her out again. Except this time, she wasn't going to loose him.
