Right & Wrong

"Write a story where, by the end, it's hard to tell who's the good guy and who's the bad guy" - writing-prompt-s (Most if not all writing prompts written about are from this page, but I will specify where they're from if you're interested in looking into it and looking for some writing inspiration)

They had been going out for five years now. It was unclear when the relationship had started to crumble, or whose fault it was. They had fought so often. It didn't make sense why they were still holding onto each other, that thought became clear today.

He was sitting at the kitchen table. While she has her back to him standing in front of the kitchen sink, the dirty dishes long forgotten. He is hunched over, mindlessly staring down the coffee cup in front of her like it had all the answers he needed. "Where did we go wrong?" He whispered, tightening his grip around the mug.

"I wish I knew." She whispered softly back in complete defeat. It was as if they both realized it was over, that this was the end. He can hear the pain in her voice and in turn his heart aches. The silence between the two is almost deafening.

He closes his eyes and tries to remember when they were happy together. But even that is a blur. All he can recall is the fight that started it all. The one that led up to this moment.

Flashback

"Why were you with her?!" She yells pounding her fists against his chest. He grabbed ahold of her wrists, halting her tantrum. She tries to wrestle out of his grip, "Stop! Please!" He tries to look her in the eyes but she can't stand the sight of him.

"Look at me." He whispers. She shakes her head. He loosens his grip on one of her hands, reaching for her chin. "Please just look at me." His voice becoming more and more hoarse as he holds back the waterfall. While hers are already streaming down her cheeks. He moves to wipe them with the pads of his thumbs. She moves swiftly to do it herself. He drop his hands by his sides, looking at the ground.

"I'm sorry." He manages to choke out, "Give me a chance to explain." Tears blurring his vision. She doesn't say anything, simply shakes her head in reply. "Please say something." She tries to let out a sigh but it comes out in broken pieces. He looks up at her desperately.

"What else is there left to say?" She says softly. He almost doesn't catch it.

"What do you mean?" Utterly confused his voice trembles.

"I don't know. I'm just done." She says tiredly, "I don't want to be hurt anymore." He lets out a humorless laugh as he wipes away a stray tear.

"You say it as if only you are the only one hurting." He spat angrily, "I'm not the only bad guy here." She finally looks at him. This time with shocked expression on her face. "You thought I wouldn't know?" He taunts her.

She mutters, "No, no, no. I-I have no idea what you're talking about." He raises an eyebrow at her, not believing a word she says.

"Oh yeah? So you didn't sleep with someone else while we were together? You didn't lie to me on our anniversary? You didn't spend it with someone else? Tell me these are lies!" Hi voice rising in volume as he looks at her with disgust. She gasps, her secret exposed.

"I was drunk!" She yells back as she jabs her finger at his chest accusingly, "You have no right to talk to me about seeing someone else! You were with her! What makes you any better?!"

"Oh that's your excuse? Yeah? Then why the fuck has he been calling you? Tell me." He whispers in her ear, "At least mine was a one time offense. You've got a whole list stacked against you." He moves away from her hastily grabbing his coat, keys, and stepping into his shoes. She follows him the whole way.

"Where are you going? We're not done here!" He lets out a huff of air at this as he shrugs on his coat. He reaches for the doorknob and twists it.

"I thought you said you were done? Are you not? That's unfortunate because I am." He says with his back towards her as he takes his leave.
