Last Words

Whenever someone reaches 18, they are given a sealed envelope with their last words inside. You just received yours and opened it, reading the words: "I always knew you were going to kill me."  - writing-prompt-s

It's been five years since you received the envelope. When you first received it, you would glance at it every few weeks. Wondering who you'd say these words too. Some nights you would say the line over and over in different ways; angrily, jokingly, slowly, screaming, the list went on.

Eventually you forgot about the envelope entirely. It's existence, it's contents. Like you never got it in the first place. It was a special day for you and your significant other. Today marked your second year anniversary together.

It was just an innocent walk down the boardwalk. It should have stayed that way. She would always like to joke around and was sometimes a klutz, but that made you love her more. It was only supposed to be a race back to the car. She had run in front of you and turned around, walking backwards to maintain eye contact with you. A teasing smile on her face, you rolled your eyes jokingly. To which she stuck out her tongue in retort. You grinned and shook your head, her childishness nature was your favorite feature of hers. If only this moment could be frozen in time, you thought. Oh how you wished it had happened.

The next thing you know you hear a car honk, the moment is lost. She's standing there petrified as car headlights are all you can see coming towards her at full speed. There's nothing holding you back as you make your next move, "Nooo!" You yell sprinting as fast as possible and manage to push her out of the way.

You see two car headlights, you close your eyes tight. Your body crashes into the windshield, the glass shatters upon impact. The car stopped moving immediately, you roll off the hood of the car onto the street pavement. You can't feel anything but you think that's because of the adrenaline rush. You hear the car door slam, the sound of rushed footsteps approaching, "Oh my god." Someone whispers. You try to open your eyes but you can't keep them open for long, a few seconds at most.

You saw shoes, just from that one glance you knew they were hers. You began fluttering in and out of consciousness. You vaguely felt her take your hand in hers. "I,I love you, you're going to get through this. You have to!" She cried.

You pushed yourself to stay awake, to open your eyes to see her one last time. To send her off with a smile. "Hey." You whispered. Tears were streaming down her face, you reached up touching her cheek and softly wiped them away. "Don't cry." You tried to put on your best smile, she shook her head. "How can I not?"

"Because I love you." You did your best to give her your usual cheesy grin. She let out at small laugh, the sound of her laugh made you smile effortlessly. "You know, I always knew you were going to kill me ..." You said jokingly.

Many times in the past you had said, "You're gonna be the death of me." You never thought it would become true one day. You were losing strength rapidly, you couldn't keep your eyes open any longer. "Stay with me!" Her voice was fading away, soon you couldn't hear anything at all just as your world darkened.
