It feels like I've been in detention for hours when a phone rings in the bin. Ms. Bloomberg walks over to it. She holds up the phone, my phone. All blood drains from my face. "Whose device is this?" I reluctantly raise my hand.

"It's mine," I manage to say.

"Ms. Johnson. It figures. Well, the call is coming from a Lindsay Merlin. Would you like to answer it?"

"Um, sure." I reach out my hand for the phone. She answers it and puts it on speaker. I feel like I'm about to faint.

"Hey, girlfriend!" Lindsay jokes. I slam my head on my desk. Some students laugh behind me.

"I'm in detention. You're on speaker. What's up?"

"Oh, well, I'm with Jess. She want's to know..."

"You are! Hand her the phone!"

"Okay," Lindsay says.

"What do you want?" Jessie asks.

"I'm so sorry I couldn't go shopping with you. It's just the party, and, and the homework.."

"Sis..."

"I promise I will make it up to you."

"Sis!"

"What?"

"It's fine. I'm at the store. Linds took me. I just want to know what you think would look better, pink or blue?" Some boys behind me snicker. I give them a dirty look and they stop.

"Do they have a silver? Or, or, tan? You look best in that."

"Um, yeah. They have a sparkly pearl."

"Okay, how much?'

"A hundred.?"

"What's your max?"

"Uh, I have eighty. Why?"

"I'll pay the extra twenty."

"Again, why?"

"Because I want to make it up to you. I'll pay the twenty."

"Add ten."

"Five."

"Fifteen."

"Fine, I'll pay you thirty."

"Okay, I'll get the dress. You owe me thirty bucks."

"Deal. Bye. Wait. We good?"

"We're good."

"'Kay. Bye."

"Bye." Ms. Bloomberg hangs up the phone.
