On the way to the church, we sit in silence, only speaking when we see something that reminded us of the deceased. The car comes to a stop. I get out. We walk into the church in silence and sit in the second row. I hear Josh make a speech about how he met Rachel in Indianapolis and how it was love at first sight. Then Ms. Ronen made a speech about how religion was a big part of Rachel's childhood then read a few bible verses. "Sarah, you're next," she ends. I walk up to the podium.
"Hi, I'm Sarah Johnson. I didn't know Rachel that long, but long enough to see what a great person she was." I stop to wipe a tear from my cheek. "She, she was a loving mother. Her children are some of my favorite people I have ever met." I look over at Lucas who is sticking his tongue out at Josh. I laugh. "She had an amazing smile, she lit up the world everywhere she went. But I'm not going to talk about her much. Funerals aren't for the dead. They are for the living. And right now, her son, Michael Ronen, who I have known his entire life, and love like a brother, was in the car the day of, the day, the day of the car accident. Right now, that sweet little boy is in a coma. We don't know if he will ever wake up. So please, take a second to think. Take a second to think about the living. Please. Thank you." I walk over to my seat bawling. Jessie hands me a tissue.
"It's okay, you did a great job. It's okay."
