Twenty-one
That night when Maya arrived at home she found Jenny and her mother sitting on the living room couch together. As soon as she entered the room, her mother pulled her into a hug. The girl froze from the lady's touch and didn't hug back – she felt too awkward to. It was the first time in approximately ten years her mother hugged her while sober.
"I'm trying to comfort you here, Maya. At least act as though you appreciate my efforts," her mother said as she pushed away from the hug at took a good look at the teenager. "Or are you like your sister here and have grown out of hugs? Now thinking about it, you've grown up a lot. You're starting to look a bit like me."
"Argh, don't insult her like that, Hailey," Jenny scolded their mother.
"Insult? I'm complimenting her!"
"How in anyway is that a compliment? First, she hears her best friend will be in coma for half a year, then you say she looks like you, the poor kid must be having a rough day."
That was probably the time Maya realised that for the past four hours that she had spent with Seungmin she had completely forgotten about Liv. His plan worked.
"Today must have been horrible for you. I can't imagine how you must feel," Hailey sympathised.
"Of course, you can't," Jenny scoffed with a roll of her eyes. "You just drown yourself with liquor before the side effects can kick in."
"I'm okay," Maya whispered as she pushed her mother away from her. "It's not like I haven't practically lost someone extremely dear to me before."
"You've lost someone dear to you before?" Hailey asked.
"Dad...and you."
"Honey, you haven't lost me."
Maya gazed at her mother from her feet to her head and then back down. The lady was only in her early forties but already looked seventy. She had large, black bags under her eyes; red eyes; skin of a pale purple hue; deep wrinkles on her cheeks and forehead; and yellow teeth.
"Yes, I have. I'm currently looking at my own mother's corpse."
Hailey's smile soon turned into a pout and later a scowl when Jenny began to laugh out loud.
"Why do I even try being nice to you two? You have zero respect for me – just like your father."
At that moment, there was a knock on the door and Jenny went to answer it. Not long later she came back in with a short girl with long, ebony hair. Maya felt butterflies fly around her stomach at that moment and began to take several steps back. Jenny noticed this and tilted her head but Hailey missed it.
"Hello darling, I'm Hailey, Jenny and Maya's mother and who might you be?"
The guest wore a white fur jacket along with a turquoise blouse, black skinny jeans and leather knee length boot heels of a similar colour.
"I'm Tzuyu, a friend of Maya's. I came to check whether she's alright after the news," the girl said with an angelic smile, one that made even Maya herself believe that she was innocent.
"Oh, is that so? I guess Jenny and I will give you two some space then."
"It's okay, we can talk outside."
Maya was hesitant but eventually she found herself outside. Tzuyu's angelic smile was gone and she glared at Maya.
"What ever happened to you being 'miles smarter' than I'd ever think?"
Maya raised an eyebrow and tilted her head.
"I'm lost," she responded, earning an irritated look from Tzuyu.
"I told you to stay away from Seungmin, didn't I?"
"You did."
"THEN WHY ON EARTH DID I SEE YOU WITH HIM EARLIER ON?"
Maya took a couple of steps away from the girl that seemed to have a glowing red horn on each side of her head.
"It was his idea," the girl stammered.
"Don't you know how to turn a guy down?"
"I didn't want to."
Tzuyu took two swift steps to the girl and immediately pulled her by the collar so their faces were inches apart.
"Say that again...I dare you," she warned through gritted teeth.
"I-I-I-I...I-I'll t-turn hi-him d-down n-n-n-n-next t-time."
"Next time?" Suddenly the Taiwanese girl began to laugh. "It's cute how you actually think there will be a next time." Maya wanted to ask what she meant but was too frightened to do so. "Once I'm done with you, Maya Diane Humphreys, you'll be in the same position as your dear Australian friend."
With that Tzuyu punched the girl in the face, causing her to fall to the ground. She crouched down and continued punching her until eventually, her arms got tired. At that point, she stood up and began to kick her. Through all of this, Maya was defenceless and vulnerable – not even being able to block the punches aimed for her face.
Maya was aware of the blood around her face so she let herself cry. Tzuyu continued to kick her and roll her over on the empty street. The American begged for a car to pass but none did. Suddenly, Tzuyu crouched down again and grabbed her by the collar again.
"I warned you of this, didn't I? Now I see where you get your looks from. It's a lot clearer to see that that your face is messed up. You look identical to your mother." Maya began to gasp for air at this point as her nose was blocked by all the blood. "Why do you look so sad? Smile for me please."
The girl ignored her and continued praying inwardly that someone would come to her rescue. She wondered why neither Jenny nor Hailey had come to check on her. It felt as though she had been outside for hours.
Suddenly, a stinging slap was placed on her left cheek before she heard Tzuyu shout, "Smile, you idiot!"
Instead of smiling, Maya spit the blood that had accumulated in her mouth onto the other's fur coat. The girl froze for a minute before looking at her jacket then once again at Maya.
"Brat!" she screamed before punching her again, causing the other teenager to fall unconscious leaving one thought on her mind just before she did: she promised to make her like Liv and she did just that.
