Fifteen

Maya rushed to the hospital as soon as school was finished. Never once did she stop worrying about Liv. She felt all of it was her fault.

"Hi," she greeted the lady at the desk through pants.

The nurse looked up at her and frowned.

"Maya Humphreys, right?"

She nodded with all the energy she had left.

"Yes."

The lady heaved a sigh before beckoning at the girl to follow her. Maya followed close behind her, enthusiastic to see her best friend recovering again however, the nurse came to a sudden stop in the waiting area.

"There's something I must tell you about Miss Taylor. Take a seat."

The girl felt as though her throat contracted and began inhaling massive amounts of air. This one of the last things she wanted to hear – the last being that Liv was dead. She hated herself for coming up with that assumption but it had been circling her mind ever since she saw her best friend recovering. I mean usually, when someone's sick or in critical condition they look as though they are getting better and then all of a sudden, they go just like that. It had happened before that's why she didn't want to bring her hopes up by saying, "Liv's going to be fine". That was never the case.

Maya sat in one of the hospital chairs, adjacent to the nurse and began fiddling with her fingers. The lady noticed this and took the girl's hands in hers to cheer her up.

"Miss Taylor's not dead, Miss Humphreys."

This statement made her brighten up which the nurse hated. She knew she gave her false hope but she just felt the need to say that.

"So, she's okay?"

"Now I didn't say that."

The girl furrowed her eyebrows and tilted her head to the side.

"Then? If she's not dead, she's alive and if she's alive it means she's okay." Maya didn't believe it herself, she just said it to cheer herself up but ended up getting the opposite effect. Her eyes began to water and her heart sank.

"I just said she wasn't dead, Miss Humphreys. I never mentioned that she was alive."

"W-what? How can someone not be dead or alive? You're contradicting yourself! What's going on with Liv? Tell me! What's wrong with her!"

She didn't mean to shout at the nurse, she just couldn't stop her emotions spilling out. Tears rolled down her cheeks and her nostrils began to sting. She knew what the nurse meant but she didn't want to believe it until she heard her say it. However instead of replying, the lady pulled her into a hug and Maya began crying harder.

"I'm so sorry," The nurse whispered.

"It's my fault. She's in a coma again because of me. I-"

"None of this is your fault."

"It is!"

"No, it's not."

Maya was aware of all the people watching her breakdown in the middle of the hospital but didn't care. At least one of them had to understand how it feels to lose someone so dear to you. She had been trying to stay strong for as long as she could but right then and there, she burst. She knew the chances of Liv waking up from this coma would be slim. It was best to start the funeral planning already. She was lucky to wake up once but Maya doubted that she was going to be lucky again.

Unable to take any more of the miasma of medicine and hospital equipment, Maya sprinted out of the building. She didn't even know where she was going – she just let her feet carry her to her destination, wherever that might be. She didn't even pay attention to the traffic lights. She wanted a car to crash into her or for her to run off a cliff or something because dying would be much better than living through this.

Eventually, she ran out of stamina and stopped running. That was when she realised her legs had betrayed her. She fell to the ground covering her mouth and she burst into tears. Her heart ached and eyes stung. She cried out loud and couldn't stop. People passed by her, giving her a compound of annoyed and sympathetic looks. All of them understood the situation and didn't dare disturb her but a lot of them also thought she was being disrespectful. I mean they lost someone beloved to them too but she didn't see them crying and screaming at the top of their lungs in the middle of a cemetery. But she was too broken to care what they thought.

"Why?!" She repeatedly screamed at the top of her lungs as she looked up at the heavens. "Why me?! Why? WHY?! I've been so good all my life! Never once did I forsake anyone or treat them like trash! What did I do so wrong to deserve such a punishment?! First you took my father away from me then my mum and now Liv! Why do you hate me so much?! Why God? WHY?"

Maya began to feel herself grow dizzy and everything was turning dark but she didn't care. She screamed and cried until finally she couldn't anymore. Then everything turned black and she hoped that it would stay like this forever. That she'd be locked away from reality or that all of this was an agonising dream. So that the black cloud that cornered her happiness would leave. So that she would forget everything and be happy. That was all she wanted right now, all she wanted ever.

Instead, Maya woke up with a pounding headache and winced in pain. She opened her eyes only to find herself in an unfamiliar dimmed room. She sat up and gazed at the whole room. There was a birch door and a bookcase filled with comics, action figures and framed photos of a familiar boy and other people on the left. On the right was a desk full of random things and a green bulletin board with papers pinned onto it. Maya squinted so she could see it properly and her jaw dropped when she saw a picture of her, Liv and Hyunjin on it as well as the dozen pictures Seungmin had shown her before.

The girl got out of the bed she was lying in and neared the board. There were red arrows all over the place pointing at different pictures but eventually each of them led back to Hyunjin. Maya's eye widened as she realised that someone knew Jinnie was the assailant but then she crinkled her nose in confusion. Why wasn't he arrested yet...unless maybe...no, she couldn't have been asleep for that long.

Suddenly, the door opened and Maya immediately turned, greeted by a bright light – the sun, she assumed. But then there was a figure. She could only see the person's silhouette though since she hadn't adjusted to the light.

"Hey," she heard him say before he took a step into the room so she could see him. A boy who, by the looks of it, was around the same age as the girl smiled at her, revealing his perfect row of teeth. His hair was dyed blonde and he had freckles speckled on his nose.

"W-w-w-who a-are y-you?" She asked as she hastily took a spray can from the desk beside her, ready to attack.

The boy chuckled a bit.

"What? Are you going to spray the deodorant on me if I get too close?"

"Yes, that's exactly what I'm going to do. This can blind people, you know."

"You're going to blind the person who helped you?"

"Helped me? More like kidnapped me!"

"You can leave if you want, I'm not stopping you."

"Where am I anyway?"

"My house."

"Why?"

"Well, where else was I supposed to take you?"

"Who are you anyway?"

The boy smiled as he took a step forward. Maya positioned her fingers so that she could spray the deodorant on him if he came to close. The boy noticed this and took a step back, teasingly.

"The name's Lix and you're Maya, am I right?" Rosie cocked an eyebrow.

"Lix? What name is that? I want your real name so I can report you to the police if you dare try anything on me."

Bam chuckled.

"If I were to do anything to you, do you really think I'd give you my real name?"

"Just tell me."

"Lee Felix. Happy?"

"That's your real name?"

"Yep."

"How do you know my name?"

"Ask Lisa...oh wait, never mind."

"You know Lisa?"

Lix tilted his head to the side.

"She didn't tell you about me?"

"No, she didn't."

"Well, in that case, I'm Felix and I'm a seventeen-year-old Aussie. Anything else you need to know?" Maya froze as she began to recall the name 'Lix'. What was it about his name that made her think about Liv? Or was it just because he was Australian as well? Suddenly, she found herself thinking of the numbers 1, 2, 8, 4, 3, 4, 6, 7, 3, 3 and 4. She knew those numbers had some reference to Liv but what was it? Why those specific digits?

"12843467334," Maya whispered under her breath. "128434673334. Call him-" The girl's eyes widened upon remembering the last thing she heard Olivia say: "Call Lix."

"What?" the boy asked as he furrowed his eyebrows. She looked up at him with a big smile making him even more confused.

"Call Lix. Liv...she said...Liv said..."

"What did Liv say?" He asked as he took a step closer to the girl who seemed to be losing her mind.

"Call Lix! She said I should call Lix!" Rose screamed enthusiastically as she started jumping up and down. "You're Lix! I found you! I found Lix!"
