Eighteen

Hyunjin grimaced as he watched his mother investigate Maya's wound. The girl couldn't take it anymore, the suspense running through her veins. It hurt bad but she could bare it because in all honesty, it was much better than the agony she had felt in the past two weeks.

"How is it?" She asked.

"She ripped off a quite a bit of skin. What did you say she used?" Jinnie's mother replied.

"A sapphire ring. Will it leave a scar?"

Maya could see the teenage boy bite his bottom lip and clutch his fists, as if trying his hardest not to teach Tzuyu a lesson – and that frightened the girl.

"By the looks of it, yes but only a faint one. A bit of makeup could cover it up well, though." Mrs Hwang gave Maya an assuring smile upon seeing the girl frown. "Don't worry. Not even a scar can ruin your beauty."

"Thanks. I should get going now or Jenny might get worried."

"It's dark outside and haven't you heard of the many murder cases? Innocent individuals are being killed for no reason at all. Liv has already suffered the consequences and you might be next, Maya. We don't want that. At least let Jinnie go with you."

She shifted her gave to the boy who was awkwardly scratching his nape. She smiled at him before nodding.

"Fine. Let's go."

"So why did Tzuyu beat you up again?"

Maya rolled her eyes as she crossed her arms.

"She didn't beat me up, Jinnie."

He cocked an eyebrow.

"Then how did you get that scar?"

"Her ring scratched me."

"And what was her hand doing near your face?"

The girl groaned.

"She punched me."

Hyunjin suddenly stopped walking.

"She did what?"

"Punched me."

"Why?"

"Because I said I won't stay away from Seungmin."

"Why won't you stay away from him?"

"I need to find out how he's going to clear your name."

"He knows? Who told him?"

"...I-I...well...I kind of sort of did."

"What? Why on earth would you do that?"

"I didn't mean to."

"What is that supposed to mean?"

"Apparently, my hands shake when I lie."

"Wait...you didn't know that?"

"No, did you?"

"Obviously."

"Anyway, he kind of caught on because of that but don't worry, I talked to him."

"Oh well, that makes me feel so much better," Hyunjin yelled sarcastically. "Seungmin hates me and seeing me go to prison would probably be a dream come true for him."

"That's not true."

"Yes, it is! Now what am I going to do? How much longer do I have before the police storm into my house and drag me off to my electric chair?"

"Trust me, I'll sort this out."

"I tried to be as positive as I could and told myself that this would all go away in a few weeks but it won't, Maya. I may as well just turn myself in."

"Don't you dare do that."

"Why not?"

"I've already lost Liv, I'm not going to lose you too."

The moonlight shone on Jinnie's face, revealing is flawless face but all Maya could see were the tears and regret in his eyes and felt her heart sink. Once again, the girl realised, she broke her promise.

"Don't you get it?" Maua didn't answer, knowing it was a rhetorical question. A lone tear rolled down the boy's cheek, making him seem so vulnerable. She wanted to pull him into a hug but couldn't move. Her feet her glued to the ground as she anticipated the next thing he would say, only to have her heart broken. "You already have."

"No, Jinnie. I haven't. I won't let it happen."

"Maya-"

"If you turn yourself in I'll kill myself...and I mean it."

"Why do you care so much? You love Seungmin, not me."

Maya abhorred how morose Hyunjin looked but he was right...to some extent.

"I care because you are my best friend! And I don't love Seungmin. Heck, I don't even know what love is!"

Suddenly, Maya felt a hand cover her mouth and looked over to Hyunjin to see a hand over his too.

"Teenagers shouldn't be out this late, nightmares come alive in the nighttime," a deep, raspy voice whispered in their ears.
