Family Means Everything

"Thank fuck," Angel muttered under his breath.

"What was that?" Jace asked, curiously. Dammit, you beautiful boy, why do you have to care so much?!

"Uh, I didn't say anything..." Jace didn't look convinced but didn't get the chance to question Angel because a strong-looking woman in a police uniform turned the corner, and she didn't look very happy.

"Angel, your mother said you weren't home yet. Where have you been, young man?" She had a slight southern accent. Once she noticed Jace and the rest of the football players she turned to them, "And why aren't you boys home? School is way past over."

"We had football practice and were coming to get our stuff from our lockers," one of the boys spoke, "Ma'am" He added hastily.

"Nice try, football ended 30 minutes ago, just get home, I'm sure all of your parents are worried." She sounded exhausted, Angel blamed himself for that, he hadn't even texted to tell his parents he was safe.

The football team started walking out of the hallway, towards the front doors. Jace paused before he turned the corner, smiling a soft smile and waving slightly. Joan noticed this and took a mental note to bring it up to Angel and Aishah, her wife would definitely like to know about how their son blushed when that boy smiled and waved just at him.

"Sorry, mom. I was waiting for my grades, since it's the end of the term they aren't publishing them on Skyward for some reason and if I got a bad grade I wanted to try to see what I could do to fix it. But they wouldn't let me see them and so I was just hanging out with Sam and Mike for a little while and then I ran into them," Angel gestured toward where the football team had left "and I had to go and I tripped and dropped my stuff and Jace helped me-"

He was pulled into a warm hug by his mom. He hugged her back without hesitation, "I'm so proud of you, my son." Joan said, her accent flowing through his ears like warm honey. "I know your mother is too," She laughed softly through her next sentence "Probably more proud than I am."

Angel pulled back from her embrace, tears welling up in his eyes. "You've n-never called me that before."

He smiled through his tears, hugging her again this time more fiercely. He had parents. Real parents. Ones who would scold him for staying out too late, and then hug him, crying because they were worried. They would ground him for getting drunk at a party, but be secretly happy that he called for them to pick him and his friends up 'because I didn't want them to get hurt.' He had a family, and that was all that was important to him right then.
