Chapter 18

[Edited]

When my back hits the ground hard, knocking the breath out of my lungs, I regret everything I have ever done in my life. That hurt like hell. I stare up at the red rocks, trying to catch my breath.

Ace comes into my line of vision and I can see him smiling.

"That hurt, angel?" He asks and I groan in response. Why couldn't I land on my feet?

"We need to go this way to the cells.'' He says, pointing to the hallway with fire lining the walls. This should be fun. The rocks are all red, like crimson red. The fire makes a walkway right in the middle. I feel hesitant. I know my secret power or whatever you want to call it is fire, doesn't mean I am any more comfortable with walking through it. I kind of figured I would have to do it eventually down here, but it didn't bother me until I was faced with it.

The sweat lines up on my forehead. It is way hotter in here that I thought it was going to be. It is hell, of course, but damn.

"You go first." I tell him, still hesitating. He walks ahead of me, right through the fiery pathway. Ahead of us, I see cells on both sides. The smell of rotten flesh fills the air, making me gag. I focus on the fire instead. I run my hands over the flames, not feeling anything. That must be because of my ability to control it.

"Adina, come on." Ace calls in a hushed yell. I look away from the flames and see he is way ahead of me, almost to the end of the walkway. I hear coughing and small voices coming from each cell. I want to save them all but I need to find Mia.

When I reach the cells, I check them all until I see Mia hanging from chains, her feet barely touching the ground. My heart sinks when I see how broken she looks. Blood covers her body, her hair is a knotted mess, bruises cover her face. I try to open the cell door but see it is locked.

"Ace, we need a key." I tell him and he nods. I hear a loud bang coming from the hallway we came out of. Heavy footsteps sound through the cave looking room. My eyes widen as I look over at Ace.

"Follow me." He says and goes down the other hallway, opposite of the one we came from. The cells are now on our right, and I can hear Mia groan. The footsteps get closer to us and they sound like they are about to pass us.

Ace jumps out from the corner, onto the demons back, and stabs it with his golden dagger in the neck. I'm guessing for a faster kill.

"The keys." I point to the row of keys that are on the demon's shirt. Ace grabs the keys and frowns when he sees at least 20 there.

"This will take forever to find the right one." He says.

"Just try and go as fast as you can. I reply and look around to the corner to make sure we are safe. I run back over to

I look at her and see her eyes are open.

"Oh my god, Mia." I whisper, water filling my eyes. Her eyes are lifeless. What did they do to her?

"Ace, hurry." I demand him as he struggles with the keys. After around 12 keys, he finally finds the right one and the door swings open. I run to Mia and get the chains off her wrists and feet.

Bruises are there, some are new and purple while others are yellow and mostly faded.

"Help me get her down." I tell Ace and he is by my side in seconds, helping me unchain her. Her eyes meet mine and she gives a small smile, her eyes barely open.

"Took you long enough asshole." She mumbles, making me laugh.

"I'm so sorry Mia." I whispered to her and grabbed her before she collapsed on the ground.

"Guys, I don't feel so good." She says and throws up on the ground and then blacks out.

"Can you pick her up?" I ask Ace and he nods, taking her from my arms.

"Help." A small voice whispers from behind me, making me whip around. There lies a girl in the same condition as Mia. I run to her side and she grabs my arm.

"You have to get us out of here." That's all she says until she passes out, just like Mia. Why are they so sick?

"Get her, hurry. I will wait for you." Ace tells me and I nod. I fumble with her chains, trying to go as fast as I can. When I finally get her undone, Ace is starting to get impatient. I don't blame him, I don't want to be here either.

I pick the girl up as best as I can without hurting either of us. She weighs way less than I thought. At least 100 pounds. Seeing how broken her and Mia are, makes my heart hurt. I put Mia through this by not listening to Ace. I should be the one hurt, not her.

"Ready?" He asks when I get out of the cell with the small girl in my arms. I nod my head and follow him to the walkway we came from.

A deep grumble sounds from beneath us, making the ground shake. I scream when the floor opens up into a dark hole of nothing. I back up so it doesn't swallow me whole. Ace jumps forward, completely separating us.

"There is a walkway that leads you back to the portal! Go right when you reach a divide." He yells at me and I hesitate. I'm too afraid to be on my own, but if I want out alive I have to do as he says.

"Don't leave without us." I reply and he shakes his head.

"Never. Be safe, Adina."

I turn around and look at the floor ahead of me.

"This is going to be great." I mumble to myself.
