Chapter 17
[Edited]
When we finally reach Cali, the sun is setting. I have never been to California, so when I see how dead it is here I frown. Everyone tells me that Cali always has people on the streets. I don't see one person or car on the roads.
"What happened here?" I ask Ace, confused.
"The portal to hell is here so everyone stays away from here."
This makes me think if Adian is the gatekeeper or whatever they call it. Ace drives down an alley way that leads down to a rundown apartment complex. He parks the car behind a garbage bin, hiding us from whatever darkness hides here.
"Be quiet just in case Adian accidently let a Demon out." Ace tells me in a hushed voice. I nod my head and stay close behind him. I'm sure if he focused enough, he could feel my breath on his back with how close I am.
We come to a door that has boards blocking off the door and graffiti all over the walls. I opened my mouth to tell Ace it is impossible to open, but he didn't have to open the door.
He walks through the door and for a second, I thought he was about to walk into it and bust his face. I hesitated for a second and I guess he got impatient because he poked nothing but his head out and made me giggle a bit.
"Come on." He says and goes back behind the portal, I'm guessing what that is anyways. I step through it, just like we did when I went through the last one. When I am fully through, everything about the building changes. Instead of a rundown apartment building, it's a house. All of the furniture is dark with red touches everywhere. Paintings on the walls are all of demons or angels being killed by them.
Chills go down my spine looking at all of them. How could Ace, an angel, be friends with a demon who has paintings that spit "I eat angels for breakfast, lunch and dinner."
"Adian guards the portal to hell, him and I go way back. He was an angel but was sent down to guard the portal, which he then became a demon. He was one of hundreds that dropped to protect humans and other things." He says. If angels drop to protect, why was he dropped to kill me?
"Adian! It's Ace and Adina." He calls out through the house. Silence. I frown to myself. If he knew we were coming, wouldn't he be home?
"He may be with the portal right now. Follow me and stay close."
I follow Ace up the stairs that takes us to another level of the house. On the walls, there are showcases of daggers, spears and some others I have never seen in my life. On another wall, it shows a stone with a lighting surrounding it. The lights up here are red, making it creepier up here than the lower level.
"What's up with him and red?" I ask Ace and he chuckles.
"Well, it's his favorite color, he is also one of the strongest demons. Supper sweet and caring, just has to have that reputation going. It's more of a show to put up than anything."
"Why did he have to become a demon?" I ask.
"It was a part of the peace treaty. Heaven sent down an angel to guard, and the Demon King got to turn him into whatever he pleased." He replies, making me frown.
"Why did there have to be a peace treaty?" He laughs.
"Heaven and Hell have been at each other's throats for millions of years. Recently though, they decided to make a peace treaty because demons would go on a killing spree." He pauses. "I have a feeling the peace is about to end though." Why does he think that?
I silence my questions when we come to a red door. Every other door is black, but this one is solid red.
"This is where he is. Stay far away from the black hole for now." He says and knocks on the door.
"Who is it?" I deep voice asks from behind the door.
"Ace." At that, the door opens by itself and there stands a man with black wings behind him, like a shield. He has Black hair with red streaks, looks no younger than Ace and I. He has deep brown eyes that have a soft look to them.
He is much taller than Ace, but slimmer. Him and I look eyes and his wings retreat back. He must know we mean no harm.
"You must be Adina, yes?" I nod my head and smile.
"You must be Adian." I reply back and he chuckles.
"That is correct. Welcome back Ace, I heard you needed a ride to hell?" He turns to Ace and asks.
"Word gets around quick huh?" Ace replies and I frown. Did he not contact him to tell him himself?
"I will try my best to keep everyone out and everything in." He says and walks over to the other side of the empty, dark room. Like Ace had said before, there is a huge black hole right in the floor. A black smoke seems to be hovering over it. I get the worst feeling about this but I try and shake it off, remembering Ace telling me not to fear the darkness.
"When you get down there, be extremely careful. Demons free range down there. Your friend will be in the prison part, very close to the entrance." He walks away from us and goes to the single self in the room. He grabs a knife and hands it to Ace.
"You must spill some blood into the portal. That's the only way to get in. Be warned, the demons will get a smell of your blood and try and kill you both." Adian says and Ace cuts his hand.
"Thank you." I say as he hands me the knife. I slide my hand open and lean over to pour in the small amount of blood that has pulled up in my hand.
"When you are ready to come out, just yell my name and I will let you out." He says and we both nod. I stay silent due to the fear, Ace has a different reason for not speaking back.
"I will go first, don't think about it Adina." He says and then jumps into the black hole. I get goosebumps as I replay his words over and over again. My best friend is down there, and I have to save her.
I push all my fears back and jump.
