{ Daenerys }
✧✦✧
𝕯aenerys had hurried to find Coren and Rhaenerys first thing the next morning, as soon as she was dressed. The door to Rhaenerys' old nursery had been open, and Daenerys paused in the doorway at the sight she had stumbled upon.
Coren was sitting in the sunlight, their daughter twirling around in front of him in one of the dresses Daenerys had made for her, deep red like Falkor's scales and she supposed she should not be surprised. Freezing, Daenerys wondered whether she should break the spell that was cast over Coren and their daughter, but it was too late, for Coren's sharp eyes had already found her. He shot her a wink.
"Little dragon, there is someone here to see you." Rhaenerys' eyes went wide.
"Kor?"
"I do not think he can fit through the door." Coren pointed out as Rhaenerys giggled, and it seemed to take a weight off of Daenerys' shoulders at the sound. It was so pure and full of hope. "Someone else."
"Mama?" Coren nodded as Rhaenerys' eyes went wide, her hands clutching onto Coren's hands as she bounced up and down. "Where?"
Coren turned, helping Rhaenerys turn as Daenerys took a deep breath. Pushing the door open, she wondered what her daughter would make of her. Would she like her? Would she-
"Mama?"
"Hello Rhaenerys." Daenerys paused, before lowering herself to her daughter's level. "I am so sorry that I could not be around mo-"
She did not have a chance to finish her sentence before the small girl had pushed away from her father and thrown herself onto her mother. Daenerys fell backwards, landing on her back as the little girl clung to her tightly. Coren was chuckling, laughing at them for a moment before he helped her upwards.
"Little dragon, come now." Coren was still laughing as Daenerys looked at him in shock. "You cannot knock her over."
Rhaenerys turned and stuck a tongue out at him as he laughed harder. The little girl turned back to Daenerys, eyes wide and smile large. She had a little hint of blue in the violet of her pupil, just enough that you could only see it when it caught the light, her white hair in waves towards her shoulders. Rhaenerys was tracing her face, her hands reaching for Daenerys' hair and other features, mapping them all.
"Pretty." Daenerys smiled softly at the girl's words. "Mama."
"Can you forgive me for being gone so long, Rhaenerys?" Daenerys brushed her daughter's hair back, de-tangling it gently. "I did not want to be so far away, but I had to protect you."
"'s alright." Rhaenerys beamed, before looking back at Coren. "Kor?"
"You are easily distracted." Coren pointed at his daughter, who seemed to let out a fairly menacing giggle that was very similar to her father's. "I have said no."
"Mama?" Rhaenerys turned to her with wide puppy dog eyes. "Kor?"
"I-"
"You cannot give in to her eyes. She has got far too good at begging." Coren chuckled, before leaning down to press a kiss to Rhaenerys' cheek. "Think of something else, little dragon."
"Play?"
"That is acceptable. Your hair needs to be done first." Coren pointed out.
"I can do it." Daenerys waved Coren off, not truly wanting to let her daughter go just yet. The man relented quickly, sitting down beside her as Rhaenerys settled and began to pull crudely carved wooden toys towards her.
"You can tell me about what has happened since I was last here." Coren watched her carefully as Daenerys sighed. Her daughter's hair was soft, with slight curls, and Daenerys was quick to think of what style her daughter would like.
"Daario is back." Coren groaned, head tilting backwards with a scowl. "As it Hizdahr, the noble. They wish for me to reopen the fighting pits."
"You do not want to?"
"I do not think the answer is more death." Daenerys sighed, before shaking her head. "But others think that it is the right thing to do and one part of me is inclined to agree."
"It might let them take their aggression out in a different way instead of on your soldiers." Coren agreed, before motioning for her to continue.
"The group, they are called the Sons of Harpy, they have increased the violence. We captured one, but one of my advisors killed him before I could make an example of him and I had to choose to show justice." Daenerys huffed, braiding the young girl's hair quickly before she could grow bored. "You can imagine how well that went."
"I can." Coren nodded, before accepting the horse that his daughter handed him. "What does Ser Barristan think?"
"I do not know. He speaks to me in riddles sometimes and expects me to find the morals in his lessons. Sometimes, all I want is clear answers." Daenerys licked her lips, before tying the braid off. "He has said that I am distracted, that my mind is torn. I could not help it. I am a mother, and my daughter was not with me. One dragon is here, two are beneath the pyramid and one comes and goes but is half feral."
"Drogon is a mystery to us all." Coren hummed. "You have been up to a lot."
"What have you been up to?"
"Nothing. Surviving." Coren shrugged, before helping Rhaenerys stand. "There is my beautiful girl, look at you. You are a picture of beauty, like your mother."
Rhaenerys giggled at that, before grabbing her toys and moving to play in the sunlight, sufficiently distracted.
"Some think I should marry one of the great houses, to forge an ever lasting bond." Daenerys caught the dark scowl that had appeared on Coren's face. "I fought them off. Jealousy is a good look on you."
"Is this the game we are going back to playing?"
"No." Daenerys shook her head. "My advisors say that I have not forged a bond, that I need to ensure Rhaenerys is not a bastard, and I know those calls will only get worse with Rhaenerys having returned."
"So you will have to marry some good for nothing noble?"
"Who would seek to steal my throne perhaps? No, unfortunately for all, that does not work for me and never will." Daenerys paused, staring at her daughter. "I have to make the best choice for my daughter first, to ensure that she is safe, that no one will harm her or threaten to. Then, I have to think of my throne and my house, to find a husband who will support my claim but not threaten it, and who will help restore my house to it's rightful place. After that, I have to think of myself, to find a husband who will love me as others have failed to do, who would not harm me or threaten me. Those men are few and far between."
"You know that if someone was to raise a hand to Rhaenerys, or you, I would kill them, whether they be your husband or not." Coren grew serious, his hand reaching to touch hers. "You will both have my protection to the end of my days."
"I know." Daenerys smiled at him. "There is only one person, that I can think of, who I know would do all of those things, who would protect my daughter and me, and never threaten to depose me, so I think I shall have to marry him."
"He sounds like quite the man."
"He is." Daenerys squeezed Coren's hand, as the man watched her softly.
"It is a nice dream, but your advisors will hate it, and do you not have to save yourself for some Westerosi lord?"
"Are you not a Westerosi lord?" Daenerys pointed out, both of them watching Rhaenerys speak to herself, commanding her toy armies with an ease that had both of her parents chuckling. "Are you not also my advisor? I made a mistake two years ago, when I allowed a traitor to talk his way into my head and to guilt me into something that I did not want. I knew then, I still know now, and I do not think I want anyone else. It just, took me a while to find my voice."
"A Thorne and a Targaryen doomed both of our houses the last time that they were married."
"Or maybe that was the gods. We are not our ancestors and I will not back out on the thought that something could go wrong." Daenerys pointed out. "After everything I have been through, I want a chance for happiness, to be able to love freely with someone who I know will never harm me as others have done. Falkor has already chosen you, as have I, and Rhaenerys is your daughter, a Thorne, just as much as a Targaryen. I have chosen you. You have been loyal to me longer than everyone else, you have advised me and cared for me, been by my side even when I dragged you into situations that were less than favourable. I can think of no one else to stand by my side, as my husband, and as my equal. This last year, without you or Rhaenerys with me, only made me more determined to never have that again."
Coren did not say anything for a moment, arms resting on his knees, admiring their daughter, before he turned to face her. He smiled softly.
"We are not our ancestors, I agree, and we will not doom our houses though I do not think there is much left for us to doom." Daenerys chuckled at that. "Do you wish for me to be honest?"
"Always."
"It is a terrible idea." Daenerys shot him a look as Coren shrugged. "I can offer you nothing more than I already have, my loyalty and my sword. I can give you no armies or land, no money or power, no prestige and my family reputation is a bit tarnished. On that case, Jorah was right and it would be better to marry someone else."
"That is reassuring of you to say."
"I am not finished." Coren pointed out. "But, you know how much I care for you, for our daughter. I would love nothing more than to marry you and at the end of the day, it is your decision. You are the queen and what can any of us say to you that will change your mind. And who knows? Once we get to Westeros, you might give me permission to travel to Alterwoode and besiege whatever lord has stolen it from my family."
"I am sure that it can be arranged." Daenerys watched him carefully, before shaking her head. "So, you wish to marry me but it is a bad decision?"
"Yes." Coren grinned at her. "But luckily for you, I love bad decisions."
Daenerys snorted with laughter, before Coren stood up. He reached down, helping her stand back up and pulling her close.
"I assume we're not mentioning an engagement to the court."
"Better to ask forgiveness than permission, is that not what you once said to me?" Daenerys sent him a wink as Coren laughed. "I shall tell them after it is legally binding, they are less likely to shout at us. Come, we should probably reintroduce you to the court and Rhaenerys."
Hiya,
so, the relationship is official official in a sense, neither of them have said they love each other but they're getting married so make of that what you will. Look, we never said that the pair made good decisions together and Rhaenerys is a sweetheart. Umm, I promise there's more Thorne stuff coming, Coren just can't do much when he's on the run and when he's not in Westeros.
Let me know what you think,
Love Li xx
