Surprise
(Name) pranced down the stairs of her school, smiling. She passed by whispering and giggling girls. They looked toward a group of whispering boys, who in turn looked at them. They all blushed and looked back into their own little group.
(Name) couldn't wait to tell Alfred the news. When she went outside and waited in her usual spot, looking out for Alfred.
He was unusually late now. Normally, he would already be standing in that spot, grinning at her approaching figure.
But now she just stood there awkwardly alone as people passed by.
She stood there for another five minutes then sighed. Alfred was late and this was wasting her time.
She walked home alone, wondering why Alfred wasn't there to greet her.
It was an unusually cold night. (Name) shivered as another icy breeze blew. She sat on the roof of her house, looking at the stars against the inky sky. Alfred didn't pay her a visit at all that day, which was strange because he always checked in at least twice a day. She sighed and rested her chin on her knees, trying to keep warm. Bringing out a jacket would have been a good idea. She shivered again.
As she sat there pondering Alfred's absence, she didn't notice a presence behind her until she felt something soft on her left shoulder. It enveloped her in warmth and blocked out the view. She heard heavy breathing, as if the creature had been fleeing for its life. Lifting her hand up in the darkness, she felt soft feathers and knew who it was.
"Alfred you're late!" She scolded, but with a smile.
"Sorry bro," she heard Alfred's trademark voice and she could sense him smiling. "Had some trouble on the way here."
"Trouble?" (Name) pushed Alfred's wings out of the way so she could see him. His hair was mussed up, probably from flying too fast here. His glasses were lopsided and his eyes seemed to shine against the darkness of the night. Despite his looks now, there was that grin.
"Yeah, but it's nothing you should worry about dude!"
(Name) sighed, knowing Alfred wouldn't give up his secrets easily. She casually reached over and adjusted his glasses. Alfred blushed and was grateful for the night to cover for it.
"I've been meaning to tell you something'" (Name) said excitedly, not able to keep it in.
"My school set up a dance!" (Name) clapped her hands excitedly. "People've been talking about it all day and the teachers put in a little twist!"
"Yeah?" asked Alfred nonchalantly, as if not interested in the topic, because Heaven knows if angels have dances themselves.
"And the twist is that since the school has an uneven number of boys and girls, a few people are allowed to bring in partners from outside the school!"
"Alfred, you don't seem to interested"
"Hmm? Oh! Yeah, 'course I'm interested, (Name)!"
"So what did I say, hmm?" She asked accusingly "if you really did pay attention to me?"
"What? Oh um..." Alfred racked through his brain for answers "Something about a dance and dates and bringing in partners from outside...?"
"Alright, that's close enough, "
"I have a question for you, Alfred"
Alfred jumped a bit and looked at (Name), expecting another memory question.
"Will you go to the dance with me?"
Alfred blinked and stared at (Name).
"Will you or will you not go to the dance with me?"
"Oh sure, I'll go with you bro...."
"You don't sound so excited" said (Name) doubtfully "Is something on your mind?"
"No, no!" Alfred waved his hands around "I told you bro, it's nothing to worry about!"
"Awesome!" (Name) grinned and clapped her hands. "So you know how to get ready?"
She huffed "You know, the formal clothes, and you gotta get the limo and the chauffeur and-" She paused "Wait, you're an angel-"
"Do you know how to do these things?"
Alfred shrugged "I don't think so"
(Name) facepalmed. Of course! He was an angel! And of course he didn't know!
"Did they have dances back in your time?" She asked.
"Great!" (Name) stood up and began making her way to the edge of the roof. "It's a week from today, alright?"
She grinned and dropped down into her room through an open window, leaving Alfred alone on the roof to ponder what just happened.
The week passed in a blur. (Name) took Alfred to different suit stores because he just couldn't get any "human" thing right. Probably because it's been such a while since he actually did something human.
Alfred had come to visit her on Saturday earlier than usual, but (Name) didn't pay it any attention.
At the store, (Name) brought out all the nice suits she thought Alfred would look great in ((He looks great in anything coughcough)) because who would want to go to a party without you or your date looking your best. Unfortunately, Alfred was picky when it came to suits, turning down every suit he was showed. So, exhausted and impatient, (Name) gave him some money and told him to find a suit for himself and that it better be a good one.
Alfred smiled and said he already had one in mind.
