Chapter 2.3

AZA
It was nearly midnight when Evabelle had mentioned she wanted to go home. She looks pale. Aza thought. "Of course, we can head." She looked at her friend a little closer. "Are you all right?"

Evabelle smiled weakly. "Yeah, it's just a headache."

"Alright," Aza consented. She turned to CJ and Sophie, who had returned from the concession table. "We're going to go you two. Evabelle isn't feeling too well."

Concern filled CJ's hazel eyes. "Oh, I'm so sorry. And on your birthday too. We could come with you."

Aza raised her eyebrows, suspicious of CJ's motives. He liked Evabelle, she could tell. Well, he was a billion times better than Sir Jerkulous. Aza preferred him over that guy any day. She opened her mouth to accept the offer, but Evabelle spoke first.

"No, no, that's sweet CJ, but I don't want to keep you from the party."

"It's no trouble. It's late any way and..." CJ began.

"Oh, no you don't," Sophie grabbed his arm. "You're not going to leave me here alone. Those two will be fine." And with that she dragged him off.

Aza shook her head. "Farwell, Harry. Ta-ta, Ginny." She called after them and laughed at their protests, then turned back to Evabelle, who was rubbing her temples. "Let's get going." She grabbed her friend's arm and guided her out of the building. "All the loud music and crazy lights could give anyone a headache." Aza reassured.

Evabelle nodded, but Aza wasn't sure if she had heard her. The two of them stepped out in the cool outside air, and turned the corner that lead to the alley. The moon shone high above them like a bright orb, an eerie spotlight on the girls. Aza, who had been gazing at it, hearing Sophie repeat in her memory, a rant on werewolves. Suddenly a real voice cut through her thoughts.

"Stick! Where do you think you're going?"

Aza and Evabelle turned. Aza began to smile. She knew she shouldn't, but she couldn't help but enjoy this rivalry thing. Chloe stood there, her hands on her hips, and her posse beside her. Aza raised her eyebrows. "Home," she replied. "I thought that was apparent."

"Did you forget our tie-breaker tonight?" Chloe asked. "Or are you too chicken to face me?"

Aza tilted her head to the side. "Oh, was that tonight. I'm terribly sorry Chloe baby, but I'll have to break that date. I know how you were looking forward to it, but you know I'm just not sure you're my type anyway. I hope you understand." She started to move.

"STICK!" Chloe shrieked. "Come and face me you coward!"

Aza stopped. She leaned over to Evabelle. "I'll be just a moment." She marched forward until she was directly in front of Chloe, then whispered. "You know, Chloe, don't you think it's a bit childish to call people names like that?" A grin crawled across her face.

Aza noted the flicker of fear in Chloe's eyes, it was just too easy. However, that fear vanished far too quickly and was replaced with a dark expression that Aza had never seen on the girl's face before as she leaned in closer to Aza and whispered in return. "The only child here is the one who has no parents, but apparently has a negligent uncle that has given her an inferiority complex making her desperate to claim attention by any means necessary."

Aza felt as though she had been punched in the stomach. Her grin fell away and pure hatred replaced it with a glare that made Chloe step back, but it almost seemed acted. There was still a enraging smirk on her lips. Aza raised her fists. "Take it back." Her voice was low and threatening.

Chloe lifted her head and stepped forward again, that shadow in her eyes growing. "I can't take back the truth."

Aza trembled, rage pounding in her ears. "You are a sick, twisted, cruel-" But she never finished her sentence. A small cry from behind her made her turn. She felt her heart lurch as she watched her friend collapse. It seemed to happen in slow motion, Evabelle clutching her head, falling to her knees, crying out. For a moment Aza stood there shocked, but quickly shook herself and ran to her friend's side.

Evabelle was shaking violently as though she was cold. She had curled herself into a ball, between gasping breaths, Aza could just make out the words... "What's... happening?" Aza reached out a hand, but drew away quickly.

"You're burning up." Aza whispered more to herself than to Evabelle. Aza then whirled to Chloe and her posse, completely forgetting the spat that had happened seconds before. "Go get help," she told them, and when none of them moved. "Now!" Beatrice and Darla, looking shaken, spun around on their heels and ran back to the party. Chloe, however, remained frozen, staring with her mouth slightly open. "Call 911!" Aza cried. "I think she might be having a seizure or something." But Chloe continued staring. "Chloe..." Aza began again, but felt another shudder beside her. She turned back to Evabelle. "Just hold on, Bellz. We're going to help you."

Aza grabbed the red purse that she had given Evabelle. She rummaged around inside it and pulled out Evabelle's phone. It was cracked, must have happened when Evabelle had fallen. Aza tried to turn it on, but all it did was give a quick flash then went dark. Frustrated, Aza threw it. "This can't be happening." She whispered.

A sudden high-pitched scream sounded from above. Aza's head snapped up and her jaw dropped. There are many strange things in New York. Not many sights can surprise a person, however this was impossible. Aza watched, momentarily stunned, as flying monsters descended upon them.

Their skin was brown leather folded around living skeletons. Instead of eyes, the brown leather skin covered their entire heads. They had wings like a bat that stretched wide, blotting out the moon and stars. One of them opened its mouth wide releasing another piercing shriek. A long purple tongue lolled among rows of long needle sharp teeth. The fowl thing's reptilian hands stretched and clawed, reaching for them.

Aza tore her gaze from the nightmare and scrambled to find something to fight with. Amazingly, nothing in the alley looked useful. There was Evabelle's purse, but it was too small and light. But she caught sight of Chloe's. It was larger, made of something leathery as well. Aza yanked it from Chloe's grasp. Thankfully it was heavy too.

"Hey!" Chloe cried, finally shaking herself from her shock. "What are you doing?"

Aza's response was to swing the bag at the closest creature grabbing for Evabelle. The purse smashed hard into its eyeless face.

The monster, screeched, flapping in a momentary retreat. Aza didn't have time to congratulate herself; the creatures were enclosing now. Aza swung the bag back and forth as one after another dive bombed them. Miraculously, she managed to keep them away from her friend. For some reason they were only interested in Evabelle, just aiming for her, which was perhaps the only reason this whole purse/bat thing was working.

"Get away!" Aza screamed, but they just kept coming. One at a time she was able to keep them back. But soon they would coordinate their attack, and she knew it would be over when that happened.

A force scraped across Aza's face, causing her to cry out and stagger back. She felt warmth on her cheek below her eye. Now they were attacking her! With her distracted, one of the other beasts scooped Evabelle up.

"No!" Aza charged and swung hard. The thing screeched and slammed into another one, Evabelle rolling out of its arms.

Behind her, Aza heard Chloe screaming. "What are you doing? Are you insane? Give me my purse back you, psychopath!"

Aza bared her teeth as she started to rummage through the purse, flinging out useless make-up crap, desperate for something else to use. "What does it look like, I'm doing, you idiot?!" Aza gasped as she felt claws dig into her arm. "Go, get help!" She swung her other arm around with whatever her fingers and curled over and shoved the circular plastic object into the monster's gaping mouth. The thing reeled, choking on it, a burst of pale powder spouted from its mouth.

"Stop! What'd you just do with my compact?" Chloe ranted. "Just give me my purse back!" She demanded.

Anger began to replace fear in Aza. What was wrong with her? Aza sucked in hard when another pair of clawed hands fully wrapped around her arms and lifted her, momentarily, off her feet and flung her back to the ground. Aza gasped in an attempt to regain her breath. Blurrily, she watched in horror as another beast got a hold of Evabelle and this time started to rise. The insane blonde staggered to her feet and charged the monsters, adrenaline flooding her system like fire.

She ran for them, yelling something that sounded suspiciously like, "for Narnia!" But she couldn't be sure what she said, her body seemed to have taken over.

Distantly, Aza thought she heard Sophie's voice as she cut her way through the monsters. "What in the world are you doin' with that purse?" And beyond that she thought she heard CJ screaming her name, but who really knew what she was hearing. Everything seemed blurred together, nothing making sense anymore.

Swinging the purse back at forth, she beat through the few monsters in her path until she reached the one that was almost out of reach, but now Aza had found another weapon. She launched up with the pointed nail file and managed to jam it between the toes of the leathery demon, causing it to shriek and wail, looking down just in time for it to get a nice mouthful of pepper-spray.

But suddenly Aza was body slammed by one of the winged devils, knocking away her weapon, sending her crashing against the asphalt, scraping up her side and bruising her hip. Her head screamed at her or maybe it was the creatures, or...Chloe? The stuck up girl's scream rent the air, slicing through the chaos, making Aza look up just in time to Evabelle falling out of the sky.

But the image was gone as suddenly hot disgusting breath lit her face she found herself nose to nose with one of the eyeless leather skeletons. His monstrous hands held her arms down, pinning her crushingly to the ground as he arched back, parting his enormous mouth, the lamplight shining on the long needled teeth that were about to sink into her throat.

Aza could not think. Time had slowed to practically nothing. Distantly, her brain recognized Sophie's exclamation of surprise, and it sounded like CJ was having a meltdown somewhere out in another world away from Aza. The first thought that managed to penetrate the wall of shock was Evabelle! She was falling! Aza had to get to her. Then she remembered that she was about to die.

The clawed hands were sudden wrenched from her arms, sending her rolling with the momentum. She gritted her teeth and pushed herself to her elbows, about to leap up when a rush of air and warm arms suddenly scooped up Aza in one fluid motion, making her gasp as she spun against a hard chest. She and her captor burst through the shrieking bat creatures, and ascended into the great starry sky. Aza struggled against the stranger. "Let me go! Let me go, you creep!"

"Don't tempt me."

Stunned, Aza realized the voice was shockingly familiar. Even though he had barely spoken a dozen words to her, there was no mistaking it. She looked up at his face, the dark hair and cool expression. It was the jerk from the party. Only now he had two widespread, black feathered wings. She couldn't speak, only managed a strangled sound of astonishment.

He laughed softly. "Speechless, now that's more like it."

Aza had to stop herself from biting him. She swallowed. "Evabelle," was all she managed to say.

The dark boy jerked his head, gesturing in front of them. A now familiar jolt coursed through her as she saw Chloe's dance partner with large glowing white wings flying in front of them. Aza could just make out the shaking figure of Evabelle wrapped in the blond guy's arms.

Aza let a out a shaky breath before speaking. "Let me guess," she began. "Evabelle and I are dead. The angel's taking her to heaven while, you're taking me to the other place."

"That could be arranged." Her captor replied.

Aza glared at him. She opened her mouth to retort when the "angel" turned and called over his shoulder. "We have to lose them, Evabelle's too fragile now. We need to hide them before we deal with the Annihilators."

Aza blinked. They know Evabelle? What's going on!? A screech from behind them made her jump. She turned and looked over her devil's shoulder. The leathery monsters were gaining on them.

"Hold on to me." The dark young man whispered.

Aza's eyes narrowed. "Like I'd ever..."

He suddenly burst forward at an impossible speed. She clutched to him frantically.

Other than being so frightened, Aza would have enjoyed flying-only she could have preferred being in the arms of the blond. Buildings flashed by in a blur. When she looked up she saw more stars than she had in a long time. She felt closer to them, like she could reach up and pluck one from the sky. Suddenly her ride jerked downward toward the rooftops.

As they reduced speed, she pushed herself more upright away from the dark one. Aza watched the white winged boy descend onto the rooftop and gently lay Evabelle there, kneeling by her side. Aza's winged boy however didn't even wait to land before letting her go.

Aza cried out in surprise as she tumbled onto the rooftop and rolled, scraping her hands more, bringing back the sting, finally stopping by Evabelle and her white knight.

"Are you alright?" The pale winged one asked, his blue eyes reflecting the stars.

Aza stared at him, momentarily entranced. Now this guy is different. Something about him instantly screamed safe. She shook her head, to clear it. "I don't know, but I think I've just made the descent into madness."

The young man smiled softly. "I'm so sorry, Miss, I'm sure this has been quite a night for you."

"That's an understatement." Aza muttered.

Another cry brought Aza's attention back to Evabelle's shaking form. Aza looked up at the white angel. "Please can you help her?" She pleaded.

He gazed at Evabelle. "She will be alright." His eyes lingered on her for a second before returning back to Aza. "Thank you for protecting her. We owe you a great debt." He rose and walked away.

Aza stared at him agape. "Wait, where are... what are... what were...what is going on?"

The golden-haired man spread his wings and looked at her from over his shoulder. But before he could speak, the darker one, who was already hovering in the air, said, "We have to go. They're going to find us soon."

The paler one nodded. Flapping his enormous snowy wings, he rose up to meet the dark angel.

"Wait!" Aza cried out again. "Why us? Why did those things come after us? Why...?"

The dark boy glared down at her. "You weren't supposed to be involved." With that he whirled and flew off into the night.

The lighter one looked at her sympathetically. "I can't explain right now, but," he looked back at Evabelle's shuddering form. "We will be back." Then he turned and flew after the other one.

Aza watched them until they vanished into the night sky. She looked down at her sick friend. Aza took Evabelle's hand. Evabelle squeezed it hard as she whimpered in pain. Aza traced her thumb along Evabelle's tearstained cheeks.

"Oh, Evabelle," she whispered. "What have we gotten ourselves into?"
