CHAPTER 11 | THE FALLEN STAR

Rae had been conducting missions on Earth with his unit when the invasion happened. With the Transport Tower destroyed, he and his three teams were now stranded on the foreign planet. Rae's initial priority was to get his teams to a safe place and try to regroup with other heavenly forces that had also been stranded on Earth.

After finding an abandoned office building to use as a home base, Rae and his three teams would take turns scouting out the surrounding areas. Each team having five members totaled sixteen angels in Rae's unit including him as the commanding officer. Rae's unit shared two healers and two ambassadors, had one guardian and one star, and the remaining were of the warrior class.

Sinjae, who was Team R-11's vice-captain, was explaining the situation to Axel while Rae had led Team R-10 on another scouting mission. "Kilo and Castyr lead R-10. Kilo is a guardian angel, and his job is to not only lead the team but also guard Star Castyr. When a star arrives in a star shower, a guardian angel is created, and their sole purpose is to protect and guard the star with their lives."

"The one with purple eyes is Kilo?" Axel asked in confirmation as he recalled the man who had remained beside the silver-haired and never left Castyr's side.

"Yes, and those two are inseparable. Wherever Castyr goes, Kilo goes."

"It's funny though, Azyr, who is the captain of R-11 by the way, used to be Castyr's team captain way back when." Kenji, the youngest member of R-12, added as he joined Axel and Sinjae's conversation.

"Mm," Sinjae confirmed. "And I was his vice-captain. Azyr and I were Castyr's first commanding officers when he joined the Division of Defense."

"Is it true that Castyr used to be way different to what he is now?" Kenji inquired of the lieutenant colonel.

"Ae," Sinjae answered. "When Castyr first joined, he was..." Sinjae trailed off as he recalled the young star that joined Heaven's defense system to save his guardian angel. "Brighter...he was brighter," he finally finished. "He changed when he became a fallen star."

"What is a fallen star?" Axel inquired. He was curious about everything that concerned the Heavens. Although his mother had descended from the Heavens, once she had passed, Axel's father locked up everything that was related to the Heavens. His father loathed the Heavens; he viewed that as the reason his wife had been kidnapped and killed.

So, now that he had the chance to learn about the place his mother had called home for much of her life, Axel was intrigued. He was learning things he never knew existed and events he never knew happened.

"A fallen star," Sinjae began, "is a star that has been touched by darkness."

Sinjae let that sink in momentarily before adding, "Castyr is no longer pure. His light is constantly fighting the darkness within him. This makes him extremely powerful but extremely dangerous. He and Kilo are always training and cultivating to control the darkness that is always threatening to overwhelm him."

"Woah..." That was all Axel could say. He had no idea that someone would have to constantly be fighting a force so strong that was trapped inside them and endlessly looking for a chance to break out and wreak havoc.

"What made him fall?" Axel asked after a moment. He wanted to know more about the star. Ever since he locked gaze with Castyr's void eyes, Axel knew there was special about him. Castyr felt familiar just like the name 'Aklys' had when he heard it and the colonel when he first saw him.

"That is a long story," Sinjae said as he placed his hands on his knees and rose to his feet. "And it is a story for another time."

The three had been resting on their sleeping bags in the common area when Rae returned with R-10. Gesturing to the soldiers entering the base, Sinjae said, "We don't have the time now. I shall relay the story sometime later. For now, let's hear their updates."

Also rising from their seated positions, Axel and Kenji joined the other angels in greeting Rae and those of R-10.

"Hades is pushing through District 26. They'll be here by tonight," Rae informed his unit as Minhyuk and Zetha began tending to the injured soldiers.

Here? Oh, right. I forgot to ask where we are. Axel had been meaning to ask what district they were in as he did not even know what district he had passed out in.

Sinjae, who was an ambassador, leaned in and answered, "We're in District 28. Rae found you in District 24."

Still unused to an ambassador's ability to read thoughts and emotions, Axel jumped slightly at Sinjae's sudden response to his inner question. After recovering from the small scare, Axel dipped his head in thanks as Sinjae turned back to focusing on Rae's update.

District 28...okay. That's good, but...District 24?! Axel was shocked when Sinjae informed him that he had been found in District 24. He had no idea he had run through seven entire districts over the course of one day. Granted, he was running for his life, but Axel still found it hard to believe.

"We need to move out." Rae's voice brought Axel from his thoughts and helped him focus on the task at hand.

At Rae's words, the fifteen other angels immediately spurred into action. Within a few minutes, the entirety of the camp had been packed up, and the unit was ready to move. Axel was impressed by the speed and efficiency with which the members organized everything.

A backpack was held in front of Axel as Castyr came to stand next to him. "Everything you'll need is in here. Use them sparingly," the silver-haired man said in a low voice before walking away from Axel and returning to stand beside his guardian angel.

Spotting blood on the right strap and right side, Axel could assume that the backpack once belonged to a member who was no longer with the unit. Axel bowed his head to the star before slipping the backpack on and walking to stand beside Kenji.

As the unit shifted into its formation, Rae took the lead with the captains and vice-captains of teams R-11 and R-12 flaking the sides while Kilo and Castyr brought up the rear. Axel watched in awe as the most experienced, high-ranking officers stood guard around the members of their team, protecting their subordinates.

A hand on Axel's shoulder guided him to stand in the very center of the group where he was surrounded by Kenji, Iris, Makio, Seraphine, and Aniela, who were the youngest of the three teams. Even the newer members were highly experienced compared to regular troops, so the vernals (the term for the youngest member) did their best to shield their newest member from any potential harm.

Observing that the unit was in formation, Rae signaled for the teams to move out. Upon their commanding officer's signal, the seventeen angels quietly began making their way out of the office. After confirming the immediate area around the building was clear, Rae led the unit onto the street where the members silently began splitting up into their respective teams.

Go with----R-10---Castyr---your team---

Static with someone's broken message filled Axel's head as he watched the unit disperse. Looking around in search of where he needed to be, Axel spotted Kenji motioning toward Team R-10 as Kenji joined his team, R-12. Is he trying to talk to me telepathically? Furrowing his brows, Axel nodded in confirmation before hurrying to stand behind Major Castyr.

Axel had never been able to talk to other angels telepathically, so Kenji's broken voice in his head excited Axel. He was unlocking more of his abilities! Although he was not able to hear Kenji's voice clearly, he was grateful he was able to gain the gist of the message.

Seeing Castyr join R-10, Kenji sighed in relief before focusing on his team's movements and being watchful of any signs of danger. While Kenji walked between his teammates, Axel was surrounded by the sniper and the two vernals of Kilo and Castyr's team. Axel was familiar with the youngest, Makio, as he had provided Axel with some water earlier that day. And, Seraphine he knew from one of Zetha's quick introductions.

However, Axel had yet to speak to the sniper. Zetha had pointed to the quiet man while showing Axel around the temporary base and informed him that the man's name was Jaemyn and he was a fellow sniper alongside Castyr. Sinjae had added that Jaemyn had fought with Castyr before the star had fallen and that the two were the best snipers in the Division of Defense.

Not seeing a sniping rifle slung over Jaemyn's shoulder as Castyr had, Axel wondered what weapon Jaemyn chose to snipe with. While he was pondering the quiet sniper's possible weapons, Axel did not notice Jaemyn slowly fall back from the group. Hearing wings being carefully unfolded, Axel turned around to see Jaemyn had spread his wings.

Axel watched with wide eyes as Jaemyn beat his wings down toward the ground to help him lift into the air. Brows furrowing, Axel watched Jaemyn fly up before disappearing around a skyreacher. Where is he going? Is he scouting out the areas around us?

Axel could only assume that Jaemyn was on a mission to make sure the path they were taking was free from danger. The unit had gone radio silent, and since he could not talk telepathically yet, Axel was isolated from the inner-connected conversation happening at that moment.

What's the report, Jaemyn? Rae linked the angel currently flying above them in inquiry to his status.

No movement detected. Jaemyn was quick to respond, but he kept it short.

Colonel, I just received a signal from another unit. Lieutenant Colonel Azyr, Team Captain of R-11, interjected as he sensed the presence of another angel.

Location?

Azyr was silent for a moment before responding to Rae's question. Two miles north.

Lead us toward the signal.

Following Rae's command, Azyr came to stand beside the colonel. With his team behind him and Rae, Azyr began leading the unit toward the location of the other angel unit. Jaemyn remained overhead in search of danger as Unit R carefully made their way through the war-torn city in search of the other stranded angels.

Rae is a colonel and leads three teams: R-10, R-11, and R-12. Each team has 5 members. They are part of Unit R in Heaven's Division of Defense. Kilo leads Team R-10 with Castyr as his vice-captain, and Azyr leads Team R-11 with Sinjae as his vice-captain. Destil leads Team R-12 with Zetha as his vice-captain.
