Evangeline recalled when she would see her parents laughing and looking at each other as if they were the only thing that mattered in the whole world, and she remembered wishing to have someone to love that much and that would love her back. Never in her life, she thought that person would be Niklaus Mikaelson—a hybrid but she was happy nonetheless. None of his bad traits mattered now that he was hers.
Today, for the first time, all the attention was on her. She watched as people danced in the ballroom and filled the room with joy. Earlier that day, Evangeline had said the two words I do which meant that she had given herself to the only man she would ever love and care for: Niklaus.
With a chuckle and wide smile, Niklaus took her hand and dragged her in the middle of the room. His hand landed on her waist as they spun around the room, staring at each other—it was as if everyone had disappeared.
"May our marriage be full of laughter, our every day in paradise," she whispered as he grabbed her waist, spinning her into the air as she laid her hands on his shoulders to prevent her from falling. "Nik, is the King watching us?"
"He is, why?"
Before she could answer, Francis and Mary made their way towards the couple. Mary and Francis had finally straightened everything out and had gotten married. The newly wed couple bowed in front of them but Mary was quick to scoff and bring Evangeline up, then offered a sweet smile to Niklaus.
"We wanted to congratulate both of you," Francis said, laying a hand on Evangeline's shoulder whom he considered like a little sister. "You know you will always have a place here, at court, Evangeline."
Mary sighed, grabbing Evangeline's hand in hers, "Although I am quite sad about you going away."
"Mary, I am coming back."
The truth was that Evangeline had no idea if she would see her best friends again—and the thought of never seeing the people she grew up with frightened her. Was she supposed to not see Mary's child? Attend Joycelyn's wedding? Or scold at Genevieve?
"I know you are," Mary whispered, holding her hand tightly. "Please, take care of yourself," she almost begged, smiling softly.
Evangeline nodded her head, beaming at her childhood friend, "I promise."
"Once again, congratulations," Francis broke the silence, taking a step closer to Evangeline to kiss her forehead. It was a sweet gesture he had started doing when they were children considering he was always taller than her.
The royal pair left as she watched them fade into the crowd. Niklaus leaned down to kiss the side of her head and excusing himself. Sitting back down, she watched as people could not stop dancing and the music would get only louder and louder. The sight of Genevieve dancing with a random nobleman made her smile widely as she couldn't hold her chuckle in, and decided to walk away from the festivities for a bit.
The cold breeze hit her face as she stood on the balcony, her hands gripping the stone pretty hard. Quietly, she could hear someone sneaking behind her but by the sound, she could tell that it was a woman. Evangeline didn't bother turning around, instead she started fidgeting with her necklace—one of Tobias' gifts.
Nervousness settled in her as she remembered what she would have to do in a few minutes or hours—it all depended on the King's wishes.
"Is something wrong, Angel?" Rebekah asked, reaching for her shoulder.
"I am quite scared and anxious to consume my marriage in front of the King and the Church," she admitted. "I've always found it very barbaric. Not to worry, my virtue remains perfectly!" She exclaimed, earning a laugh from Rebekah. "I am just scared."
Rebekah watched as Evangeline hugged her body with her two arms and she smiled softly. Taking her hand in hers, she said, "I can help you with that," she told her.
"How? You are indeed very pretty Rebekah but I am not sure the King can be fooled that easily."
Rebekah snorted, "Has Niklaus never told you? With our curse comes abilities. There are three of them: strength, speed and mind compulsion."
The two women reached the King as he offered a perverted smile that made Evangeline lose her smile. The thought of him seeing her consume her marriage sent shivers down her spine. She watched as Rebekah bowed in front of him, and smiled.
"Lady Evangeline, Lady Rebekah," he greeted them. "To what owns me the pleasure of your visit? Are you not supposed to enjoy the festivities?"
Rebekah took a step closer to him, staring into his eyes and King Henry seemed wholly captivated by her, like he somehow had to do whatever she would tell him.
"You do not want to watch Lord Mikaelson and Lady Evangeline consume their marriage," she whispered sweetly as he repeated the words, leaving Evangeline shocked. "Now go find Nik, I will take care of the rest," Rebekah told her as Evangeline thanked her.
Evangeline did her best to browse through the room, excitement fulfilling her as she looked for her husband. Knowing what Rebekah did left the weight off her shoulders and she felt free somehow.
"Nik!" She called out for him, spotting him next to a nobleman. Evangeline wrapped her hand around his arm, resting her head against his back. "Hello."
"Hello," Niklaus chuckled, turning his body to face her. Each one of his hands landed on her cheeks as she closed her eyes to the touch. "What is it, my love?"
"Would you like to leave?" Evangeline whispered softly, battling her eyelashes at him. She then leaned closer to him, their lips grazing each other. "Rebekah used mind compulsion on the King, we don't have to consume our marriage in front of him nor the Church."
His eyes widened a bit, "You should have said that earlier, my darling," he told her, taking her hand in his and dragging her out of the ballroom, making her laugh out loud.
Niklaus and Evangeline walked into his chambers gleefully. He grabbed a cup, handing it to her as she took it gladly and started to sip on it.
"You could have told me about your fears."
Evangeline frowned, chuckling, "I am not afraid, love," she whispered, taking steps to be closer to him and laid her hand on his knee. "I do not like the idea of consuming it with all these eyes on us."
Niklaus cupped her face, looking at her as if he was falling all over again. All he could was lean down and peck her lips softly but Evangeline had other plans as she brought him closer, drowning him into the kiss. Instinctively, his hands went down on her waist, giving it a squeeze here and there.
"Are you sure, Angel?"
Evangeline stumbled gently upon the side of the bed, her back hitting the mattress, "Yes."
"Tell me if you wish for me to stop," he whispered, peppering her neck with soft and sloppy kisses.
"Never."
...
Evangeline laid naked in bed, the sheets were over their bodies as she placed her head against his chest, feeling his heart beating calmly—almost rocking her to sleep. Her nail traced lazily his skin, making him exhale softly.
"Tell me, Nik. Are you the only vampire to walk on Earth?" Evangeline queried.
Though she couldn't see him, she could feel him shake his head, "Of course not. After five hundred years, I doubt we are the only one," he told her, his fingers dancing on her bare shoulder and sometimes through her hair. "Elijah, Kol, Rebekah, Finn and I turned people."
"Finn? Who is that?"
"My mother bore seven children. Freya, my sister, died of the plague. Then, she had Finn, Elijah, Rebekah, Kol and me," he said. "There was Henrik too but he died because of the wolves."
"Wolves?"
"I was a fool back then," he whispered, almost ashamed to admit that he had led his own brother to death. "Henrik and I were eager to see why our parents were forbidding us to leave the house on the full moons, so we waited for everyone to be asleep and when we heard the wolves howling, we went to see--sadly, one of them attacked my brother and I had to escape."
To his surprise, sadness was written all over her face, "I'm sorry," she told him, her hand on his chest as she drew light circles. "Worry not, I am not going to see you as a monster, my sweet husband," she added.
But he was one. The worst monster to ever live. Worst than those Norsemen who used to fight until death fell upon them. Worst than the Kings who sought power and lands. Niklaus Mikaelson was a monster because of his nature and his impulses. He had killed people and loved the thrill of it--would his wife, sweet Evangeline, still love him despite that?
"What is going on in that beautiful mind of yours, Nik?"
"Many, many things," he replied softly. "Is there anything else you'd like to ask?"
Niklaus was eager to tell her everything, to tell her his deepest secrets so he could finally feel this awful weight lifting up his shoulders.
Sitting up, she hid her breasts with the sheets, "I have so many questions. How is it that you are half vampire and half werewolf?"
"My mother's infidelity," he replied as though that was an obvious answer. Evangeline couldn't understand how his mother had gone to another man--she could not even imagine herself laying with another man. "My father and her went through a hard phase when they lost their sweet Freya. Their firstborn and my father's favourite. Mikael, my father, could not even spare a glance at my mother so she went to another one."
"Do you blame her for what you've become?"
Niklaus chuckled, "We all do, my sweet love but I blame her the most, she made me a monster. An atrocity that is different from everyone else."
"Do not feel that way, Nik," she said with a frown. "Think of it as being powerful. Am I wrong? You are powerful."
"Very powerful, Angel. If you asked, I could deliver the whole world right in the palm of your hands, darling," he murmured, kissing her bare arm. "We could have everyone at our feet."
Evangeline smiled, if it meant to be with him, she didn't care for anything really. If he wanted to be King, then she would be his Queen. If he wanted to commit murder, then she would be his accomplice. Evangeline would go to the deep end for him and perhaps, that was a very scary thought but when she looked at him, all the terrifying thoughts vanished away and her heart swelled with love and pride.
"Promise me to never leave," Evangeline said as she now laid next to him, her head on his chest as he let his fingers dance on her shoulder. "I cannot bear a life without you, Nik."
"I won't."
